WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure

Matmos are M.C.Schmidt and Drew Daniel, a fascinating electronica duo from San Francisco. I had briefly mentioned them in a previous post about Herbert/Matthew Herbert because they have worked w/him due to their similar interests in incorporating recorded body sounds in their music. This cd of Matmos incorporates recordings of surgical procedures being done on humans(one of the duos fathers is a plastic surgeon who allowed them to sit in on his surgeries). Here's their vid for "Lipostudio . . .And So On":They are known for incorporating really unusual sources for their sampling & don't rely on others music. When I discovered these guys I was really intrigued by their fascination with unusual sounds. I found out about them through an interview with Bjork I read. She talked about the pioneering work they did with sounds which caused her to contact them. Since then they've collaborated with Bjork on her recordings as well & have toured w/her as part of her band & opened for her. This album is very quirky and reminds me alot of Aphex Twin the electronic artist. I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it. The song I posted above is the most accessible/danceable song on the album. The cd came out in '01. Here are a few short clips of Matmos live:http://brainwashed.com/matmos/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matmos

  1. mktackabery says and thus we are twins. I dig this stuff too Aug. I get in moods where this is all that will do it for me. My husband says that makes me a space freak. LOL.

  2. Jammy Jeff says hmm? I don't really know what to say August.

  3. Rawkkiddoh says very odd, but still funky.

  4. Anna says August has many sonical skeletons in his closet.

  5. Augusts1 says Hehe, cool you're a freak like me, Michelle. I thought you'd be into this. Jeff, speechless? Highly unusual for you, lol! Surely you have some opinion. Kev, quirky I think best describes their music. Yea you don't know how true that statement really is Anna, lol!

  6. Anonymous says And im not saying it's a little odd cause i don't listen to them cause i think thats cool that they're like pioneers in music and all....but did they have to use the recordings from a surgery.......now thats just weird. It kinda made me feel sick.

  7. Augusts1 says FP it sure sounds to me like you're saying it's a little odd, lol! You'd be right though. It IS rather twisted & weird, I agree, but you know how artists can be. Artistic self expression can take some odd forms indeed & one can embrace it or not depending on your taste. I've seen some artwork that's nauseated me for sure! Take for example some of the videos of Chris Cunningham for electronic artist Aphex Twin - some very deeply disturbing images which I wouldn't recommend watching if you got kinda sick from listening to these guys(who are tame in comparison, really).

  8. Anonymous says hahaha!! Im sure they're much tamer if you say so August. Aphex Twins: I'll stay away from them , they're probably alot more "ARTSY"(ha) than Matmos. lol!

  9. Augusts1 says It's just Aphex Twin, singular(don't ask me why). Matmos' music is more artsy actually. Aphex Twin's music is a little more accessible & you'd probably enjoy some of it like his ambient music, it's just their music videos you want to steer clear of that are freakin' bizarre & disturbing on many levels(but of course I love, being a sick twist that I am, heh). If you go their artist page here on Mog you can hear their music but avoid the vids, for sure!

  10. Anonymous says Ambient music is very cool, i'll go and look at their mog page right now. But August how can you be a sick twist when you enjoy gourmet cooking and your lap top? lol! It just doesn't seem to fit a place anywhere. :)

  11. Augusts1 says Trust me, it fits cause I've got a wide range of tastes & interests Desiree. And we all have that dark place in our psyche that we can go to even if you don't want to, it's there. It's just part of being human ya know? I'm old enough to know myself pretty well(i'm old enough to be your dad, lol) & been around the block a few times. I have a pretty twisted sense of humor too.

  12. Anonymous says LOL!!! yeah.....it just comes with being human I guess, but im not personally dark, the darkest I go is probably a light grey (haha) or maybe the color graphite I have a pathetic sense of humor.

  14. Anonymous says Well I had my share so far even at 18...cant say i dont get bitter about it sometimes but I think it has alot to do on how you handle and respond to situations and circumstances.

  15. Augusts1 says I'm sure you have but just imagine what you've experienced times two & you tend to get a whole different perspective on life. It's strange cause each age bracket you go through has certain fixed experiences, like right now you are figuring out who you are, the 20s are where you work at proving yourself to the world as far as career, 30s you start questioning your purpose in life, 40s you accept who you are exactly as you are, and so on. Sure there are variances but most people experience these on one level or another.

  18. Augusts1 says Hey, I thought I killed you, lol!! They are pretty damn creative in a very fascinating way. From what I've seen on their website they pay homage to very obscure inventors, poets, artists, etc. which makes them very interesting. Glad you like them too.

  19. Amy Honey says yeah, ever since i heard The Civil War i was hooked... also, they did that Rat Relocation Project thingy, which pretty much sealed the deal.

  20. Augusts1 says There's a song on this cd that I have that's called "For Felix(And All The Rats)" where they recorded their pet rat biting the bars on his cage. Pretty off the wall stuff but way cool. Here it is:
