MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

What's Wrong With This Picture? No Posts For The Psychedelic Furs? That can't be right!

Posted over 2 years ago
In my continuing quest to right the wrongs of unposted & neglected musicians/groups I discovered last night there were no posts for the Furs!! WTF? I know I've seen at least one post but maybe it was just a vid someone posted in the comments of someone else's post. So it got buried. Oh well.I'm rectifying this now damnit! My fav Furs song off "Book Of Days"('89).Wiki sez: "The Psychedelic Furs came together in England's emerging punk scene in 1977, where they were initially called "RKO," then "Radio." They then vacillated between calling themselves "The Psychedelic Furs" and "The Europeans", playing gigs under both names before permanently settling on the former name.[1] The band initially consisted of Richard Butler (vocals), Tim Butler (bass guitar), Duncan Kilburn (saxophone), Paul Wilson (drums)[1] and Roger Morris (guitars). By 1979, this line up had expanded to a sextet with Vince Ely replacing Wilson on drums and John Ashton being added on guitar."My intro to The Furs was by a friend who was into alternative rock bands that weren't mainstream & he introduced me to all sorts of odd groups I'd never heard of with odder sounding names. The Furs''82 album "Talk Talk Talk" was the first he played for me. A couple of years later when "Mirror Moves" came out The Furs came to Portland, OR & my friend & I went to see them since I'd become a fan by then. They put on an amazing show & we were front & center so we saw it all. Richard Butler was all over the stage wearing a big Indian style swami outfit w/billowing folds of material. He was so cool. The Bangles opened for them too & Susanna Hoffs flirted w/me making googly eyes & I got all embarassed. Those were my days of innocence! It was a great show all the way around. Here's my other fav song "I Wanna Sleep With You" off the "Talk Talk Talk"('81)live in San Francisco ('04 or '05, just the audio apparently w/still pics):So The Furs are still around & I know Richard Butler released a solo cd last year ('06) that I heard on AOL when they were my ISP. It was pretty mellow but sounded great.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelic_Furshttp://www.burneddowndays.com/

  1. Dale says Weird; I was pretty sure there was a Psychedelic Furs post around at some time. Oh well, glad you caught it. My introduction to them was when MTV would play the video to "Love My Way" every hour, on the hour. I liked the song, but got tired of it, after so much repetition. Then I heard "Pretty In Pink" (no, not the lame redux for the movie) and was blown away. I had the poster from Mirror Moves on my bedroom wall.

  2. Augusts1 says And I know someone will post "Pretty In Pink" which is what they're famous for so I'll beat ya to it, heh! This is the '86 remake of their original '81 song they did for the movie of the same name: Although I like this song far better,"President Gas" live:

  3. Augusts1 says Yea Dale, the remake of Pink wasn't as good as the original. And since MTV played the heck out of the remake vid I got sick of it. I think I still have that poster that came in the record sleeve of "Mirror Moves" or am I imagining that? I'll have to dig that album out.

  4. Dale says Oh yeah, "President Gas" was the perfect way to kick off All Of This And Nothing. An absolute kick to the gut. That's an excellent album, I might need to slap that on the Gigabeat.

  5. Augusts1 says Apparently you love them doubly as much Kev, heh! I didn't really get into Love Spit Love cause I was mad at Richard for breaking up The Furs. I rest my case w/the fact that Youtube had no vids for LSL. I'll have to listen to that song though. Dale, "All Of This & Nothing" is a great hits cd, love it. Have you heard their "B sides & Lost Grooves" cd? Lots of great unreleased & remixed songs. I highly recommend it.

  6. 1234chainsaw says The first two records are great, not so hot on the rest but haven't heard the B-Sides one. It's good to have you join Neill and I on the quest to fill in the gaps. I'd have filled this one had I realized it was still gaping.

  7. Augusts1 says Yea the first two are great Chain, I also think their last two are pretty great as well since they returned to their earlier sound but had better musical chops by '89 & '91.

  8. Neill says Ha! I've got downright indignant in the past when I've found out that no one has made a post about one of my favourite bands! Almost had Stiff Kittens today when I realised that a band as obvious (in my little mind) as Warsaw had not had anything done about them. . As for the Furs, I always thought of them as a great singles band. As for the albums, got dragged along to a concert; fell asleep! It's TRUE!

  9. mktackabery says that is so not right because I know for a fact that I posted my favorite PFurs song of all on here about two months ago. But here it is again.

  10. Jammy Jeff says It's weird really, but the Furs career in the UK never really took off. I know they were much bigger in the States. I have "Talk Talk Talk", but for some reason I didn't move on from that album.

  11. mktackabery says I think radio didn't know what to do with them; they were too sweet for punk, too out there for radio. I always adored them though.

  12. Augusts1 says You know Michelle, I recall you posting that Furs vid now that you mention it. Was it an actual post or did you post it in the comments of another post? It's odd how some groups are huge in the UK & others are huge over here in the US Jeff. What will be popular is so arbitrary it seems & really dependant on how cool a group comes across. It's that "It" factor that no one can pin down or predict. Very strange indeed.

  13. mktackabery says yup, here it is, tagged and everything. Maybe something about the beta - gamma - MOGtransformation banished it from the index or something.

  14. Augusts1 says That is just wrong Michelle. But you know what it is? You tagged them as Psychedelic Furs, not The Psychedelic Furs which is a huge distinction in the workings of a puter program like Mog. No wonder. I recalled telling my flirting w/Susanna Hoffs story when I went to tell it on this post but couldn't recall exactly who posted about them. Thanks for pulling that up. I think if you go back in & edit & add The it will show up on the Furs artist lounge.

  15. strongbad says Ha - just came to Mog to see if there were any posts about the Furs (assuming there'd be loads) and this was on the front of the "Read" page! Can't get "Pulse" out of my head at the moment. The debut album is one of those "memories of a particular time and place" things for me :) Right... thanks Augusts1 for the info - I'm off to explore the artist lounge...

  16. Augusts1 says How synchronicitous! You're welcome Strongbad. Enjoy!
