Eleventh Dream Day or ISENIH[I'm So Early '90s . . .] #14

Posted over 2 years ago
Eleventh Dream Day have to be the most criminally underrated & underappreciated bands around. They began in '81 when Rick Rizzo & Janet Bean met in college. They relocated to Chicago, Illinois and released their self-titled e.p. debut in '87. They released 2 other cds on independant labels before signing w/Atlantic Records in '90 w/"Borscht".I didn't become aware of them until '93 w/"El Moodio" cd & "Makin'Like A Rug". I actually saw these guys live & they rocked out, putting out a great live show. Unfortunately, after this Atlantic dropped them & they went back to releasing on independant labels. The became the inspiration for many of the indy groups in the mid-'90s. "El Moodio" is just a classic rock album w/some excellent tunes. EDD has continued despite member changes & it's ups & downs. They've continued to release cds over the years & released a new cd "Zeroes And Ones" in '06, so they've been around over 25 years. Janet has also done work in the indy band "Tortoise".Here's the only vid on Youtube which is the band performing the song "Awake" live in Cleveland 2/1/90:http://www.djangomusic.com/item_music.asp?djc=&id=R+++497945http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleventh_Dream_Dayhttp://www.thrilljockey.com/artists/?id=10015

  3. Jammy Jeff says I like it August, particularly the first upload. The dual vocals really works well, and I think this band would have been huge at the end of the 70's. They are underated from what I've heard and you've told us.

  4. Augusts1 says Not surprised Kev, not many have heard of them yet they really are great. Glad you enjoyed it. Jeff, the dual vocals is what really caught my attention since it was so different from anything else at the time. You may very well be right about them being big at the end of the '70s if they'd been making music then. I actually have 3 of their cds but they've put out 9 proper cds & an ep.

  7. TopMan says EDD - Together 25 years and still making GREAT music. In addition to Janet's work with **FREAKWATER** and Doug McCombs' status as a co-founder of **TORTOISE** ... were you aware that the heart and soul of Eleventh Dream Day - **+RICK RIZZO+** ...their primary writer and lead singer... the guitarist who can peel the paint off your walls with his riffs - is now an 8th Grade Teacher for the **Chicago Public Schools**?!?! Hey... you gotta feed the kid somehow! And... a steady income allows him the luxury of recording a brilliant record with Janet and Doug every 5 or 6 years.... like their most recent release in 2006, the incredible **ZEROES AND ONES**. Oh... and hats off to their label... Chicago's own **THRILL JOCKEY** ... who care more about the music than the money and who have provided Eleventh Dream Day a home and a commitment to release and distribute their records in perpetuity

  8. Augusts1 says Thanks for the comment Topman. I had read somewhere in my research for this post that Rizzo is a schoolteacher as well as Janet & Doug's work. Think I read it on their Wiki entry. Too bad Rick had to get a full time job though to pick up the slack for his lack of income w/the band. I have yet to hear "Zeroes And Ones" in it's entirety. And yes Thrill Jockey must be a great label!
