Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai has to be one of the best hip hop rap soundtracks ever to a movie(although I say the "Brown Sugar" soundtrack rivals this).I never did see this movie in the theater and I didn't see until '02 or '03. Once I did I was mesmerized by the beats, surreal scenes & gangsta violence. Forrest Whitaker proves to be the perfect Ghost Dog, a cold killer for hire w/a gentle spirit for his pigeons & penchant for living simply like the ancient Japanese samurai. The rap/hip hop tracks mirror Ghost Dog's more meditative style to a point where you literally get lulled into the same state. The movie is a slower paced film directed by Jim Jarmusch and depicts the mob gangster life of the men who hire Ghost Dog for various jobs. If you haven't seen a Jim Jarmusch film, be prepared, they usually are very artsy & quirky. Not movies for the average moviegoer used to the usual hollywood fare. You've been warned. I personally love more artistic, independant film.RZA of Wu Tang Clan fame enlists a bunch of rappers/singers who I've not heard of before such as North Star, The Black Nights, Tekitha, Master Killa & Royal Fam. Wu Tang Clan even make an appearance on one song. Here is a vid of the beginning of the film w/RZA's instrumental version of 'Samurai Showdown', enjoy:Oddly enough, this following bit of music from the movie inexplicably isn't on the soundtrack but is one of the main reasons I bought the cd. I hate that shit when a song isn't included. What were they thinking? C'est la vie. It's still a great soundtrack, even w/o this.
