My Girls(er Boys)

Posted about 3 years ago

So the new Animal Collective album 'Merriweather Post Pavillion' leaked and I acquired a copy of the album. Listened to it last night & this evening. It's a really great album. Quite a bit of it reminds me of choral music. I can't even pinpoint their influences on this album. But it sounds quite a bit different from their previous toons that I've heard. This album is more electronic.

Here's 'Taste' live at the Coronet Theatre, London:

I was really sad to have missed their set at Coachella BUT they were playing at the same time as Kraftwerk & Portishead directly followed on the same stage and I wasn't about to lose my spot. I was so glad I saw those two legendary bands.

I had no idea AC had been around so long- this is their 9th album since '00! Sheesh, These guys are prolific! I just became aware of them with their last album 'Strawberry Jam' in '07.

*Desiree* yvw & thanks. They are a difficult group to peg since they have such a unique sound. Even after listening to the album a few times I can't even begin to spot the influences.

*Kev* so what do you think of AC?

The interesting thing about AC is that they use their live concerts as a kind of "testing ground" for new songs and ideas, so you can almost literally follow the development of their "next" album via live show recordings. Most of the songs from "MPP" have been in their set list for the past six months or more, with lyrics, titles and arrangements changing from show to show.

But the final album still catches you unprepared. The arrangements of the songs have changed considerably in the studio, and they have applied the methodology they have been using live lately - the whole album is one long mix, with songs leading into each other, almost like a DJ set.

Already my favourite album of 2008 (ok, ok, I know, it's not coming out until sometime next week, but still).

    Happy New Year

I bet they are fascinating to see live. How many times have you seen them Kamen? They seem like a group that likes to catch it's fans by surprise by experimenting.

Just got this one today... I am really loving it too.  I had no idea however that they had been around that long either, strawberry jam was my first exposure to them as well. Hope they make it to the midwest, I would love to see them live!
