Picked up the dvd 'Chet Baker - Live At Ronnie Scott's' at my local library that I'd reserved and after a week finally got around to watching it. It was one of those dvds that I thought would be nice to check out if I had nothing better to watch. And knowing that Chet Baker is a legendary jazz trumpeter I figured it would be cool to check this out. Well, my week is over, the dvd needs to go back tomorrow(Sat.) & I'm now just watching it as I type this. I almost didn't watch it though. But I'm SO glad I did.
There's a major reason why the man became famous. What a wonderfully smooth style of trumpet playing he has. Watching him play is blowing my mind. And I'm not a big jazz fan per se, although I went through a new jazz phase when I was in college. Check out this piece 'Love For Sale' from the dvd:
The musicians playing with him are top notch as well. But then Van Morrison and Elvis Costellos both guest too on this concert from 1986(but released in '01). Here's Elvis with 'I'm A Fool To Want You':
If you know Costello's work you can see how he was hugely influenced by Chet as well as other jazz greats. Costello interviews Baker which is interspersed throughout the performances. Chet was a WILD child! He did drugs, wrote prescriptions(lol), drank, served jail time, you name it, he probably did it. The interview tidbits are fascinating. Check this dvd out if you get a chance.

Excellent read August! I'll have to rent it sometime, timeless music ... unlike screamo maybe LOL Yeah my dad was really into jazz and I just never really got into it, this post was inspiring though. Tsp tsp Elvis writing prescriptions?! your serious? wow that is WILD lol Costellos the man though. Didn't Ben Gibbard do a concert with him? I was watching it with my bro like 2 years ago or something. Anyways, he's a cool cat :)
Oh cool, I'm glad I inspired you. Chet Baker is the one who wrote the prescriptions not Costello, haha! He talks about it in the interview sections, so it's straight from the horses mouth.
Costello is awesome too. I have a bunch of his albums . . . .
whoops! well obviously the man has talent, both of them but I was so blown away by the jammin' music I got a little sidetracked and mistaked them :P LOL (I'm terrible)
oopsi whoopsi! :D
still inspired August ..... still inspired HAHA
S'ok Desiree, no worries!
haha ok then .. thanks :P
library finds are always the best, and it looks like you scored onthis one August
Yes they are & yes I did Kev. I LOVE my library!
i got a 50 dollar gift card to borders for christmas. i spent an hour just looking at the music dvds today. i couldnt decide! so i left empty handed :( i cant believe they want 30 bucks for the talking heads stop making sense. that to me doesnt make sense, i mean i dont want to spend over half of that card on just one dvd that ive already seen several times. but im thinking either that, or gorillaz, or rush, or yes, or tenacious d.
30 bucks for 'Stop Making Sense'? That's what you get for shopping at Borders! You can get it for under $20.00 new (plus shipping)on Amazon.com here:

August: If you haven't seen the Baker documentary "Let's Get Lost," I heartily recommend it. It's a primer for anyone interested in Chet's talent, his music, and his self-destructive ways.
Hmmm, thanks for the tip Mike, I'll see if the library has it.
