This is a spin off of Dale's post here: http://mog.com/Dale/blog/275158. I started listening to Gnarls Barkley's 'The Odd Couple' album this evening since it had been awhile. But as I was listening, I realized I just wasn't enjoying it. I really dug this when it first came out but I lost interest pretty quickly.
It just hasn't stood the test of time. And it's definitely no 'St. Elsewhere'. But it's not like there aren't great songs on it. Like the red button song atop. I'd say about half the songs are really good. But maybe it's just the sequencing of the album since it doesn't really flow. I'm not exactly sure what it is but I so wanted to love this album since I loved 'St. Elsewhere'. And I love Cee Lo Green's voice.
Here's another great song on the album called 'Going On' live on Letterman:

Then my challenge to you would be to rearrange it....what order should it have been? Does that improve your listening pleasure?
Or as Stew says as I put on makeup "You can't polish a turd."
August you are so right with this one. Good album, I will give it that. However their first still gets more air play than this one, does that make me crazy? (See what I did there?)
*Annie* I'm not sure I even want to take the time to do that. You know, so much music, so little time. I usually don't change the order of an album since that's how the artist originally intended it. Although, I did that w/Radiohead's 'Hail To The Thief' cause I just didn't like how they sequenced it. But that was a first for me. And shame on Stew for making such a 'shitty' remark, lol!
*Kev* I do see what you did there, clever guy! I also give them kudos for doing some really unusual stuff on the album too. They certainly push the hip-hop/soul boundaries.
Btw, the regular video for 'Going On' was pulled so I replaced it w/a live version.
Hey! I like that live version. No complaints from me. As for expectations, these guys really set the bar so high with "Crazy" - THE song for so many months - that almost anything they do (no matter how kick-ass) has to seem diminished by comparison. Here's to lowered expectations?
Isnt' that live version great Mike? I suppose you're correct in your assertion about the bar being high w/'Crazy'. Maybe with this album, they are showing their versatility. Hell, this album would be a high point for many a lesser band.
i really like cee lo's voice too, but ive never really been able to listen to them. im starting to think 'crazy' killed it for me. ive heard that song so many damn times... obviously it drove me, well, you know.
Yea, I hear ya on the 'Crazy' front! It was the reason I stayed away from listening to their first album cause I was so sick of that song.
