WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

How Do You Keep Up With A Band's Latest Offerings?

Posted 12 months ago

Seems like I'm always behind the times when it comes to videos of artists I like. I was checking out The Fiery Furnaces website and was checking out the video section and discovered they had released a video for their song 'Navy Nurse' some time ago. Last week I discovered I hadn't seen a Goldfrapp video either.

It's so difficult to keep up on all the groups' latest. I've signed up for email updates from some artist's websites but I hate getting so much email. So how do you guys keep abreast on your fave groups offerings(other than on Mog)?

Here's the video for 'Navy Nurse':

Also, The Fiery Furnaces released a double album of live versions of their songs as a retrospective called 'Remember' in August! It has 51 tracks on it. Wow! I had heard they were going to release the album but then forgot about it until I checked out their site.

I find Message Boards, Forums and look for Blog posts on Hype Machine. I also make mix cd's for friends and acquaintances I meet and sometimes they are fans of the same bands and artists. In those cases, we share info.

    I hope this helps.

One of my primary ways is through Rate Your Music; I've put in my whole album collection along with my parents' records into my profile, and near my most recent acquisitions, there is an 'Upcoming' section that lists releases coming up by all the artsits I own music by, automatically! :)http://rateyourmusic.com/~MarilynRoxie

Of course, sifting through MOG and using Google's Blog Search to find music blogs are two other handy ways.

*Myeverpresent* yes, that does help, thanks. Unfortunately my real life friends aren't into my type of music.

*Marilyn* wow, hadn't heard of that music site. I just checked it out. My music collection is humongous though(over 1200 cds, then I have lps & tapes).

I'm normally pretty behind myself, especially when it comes to videos, since I don't watch much TV.

August, thanks for the info about the Fiery Furnaces release! I don't own anything by them but always like 'em when I hear 'em. I used to rely on myspace bulletin updates but it was way too much like a giant spam folder, and I've since deleted myspace. Now I am relying on you and your updates!

Marilyn, I've definitely got to check out that site!! I haven't got all my music on my computer but enough to start me off for sure. Thanks!

Britt you should definitely pick up 'Widow City', it's their best so far. Either that or 'Blueberry Boat', those are my two faves. I saw them live in the fall of '07 which you can read about here: http://mog.com/Augusts1/blog/120780 Definitely worth seeing live!

Glad I can be your updater. But who updates the updater? lol

good post August, and like you I cant keep up. Back in the mTV days you could catch the newer videos when they were "dropped" as a world primier. Now I just head to youtube, and end up finding many videos I did not know existed

bah! i can barely keep up with mog alone. and i usually find out about new videos through mog! its a vicious cycle.

Thanks *Kev*. Yea, it seems youtube is the best place to find new vids, especially since MTV doesn't seem to know what videos are anymore. . . .

*Sam* yea, you said it, mog alone is hard enough to keep up with!

I rely on serendipity mostly.  That usually works best.  That and I read intuitive patterns on the web with the chip in my head and when I see a spike in symbols I investigate.

Your most welcome August.  I also rely on just remembering and sometimes my emusic account forces it down my retinas.  I have subscribed to two newsletters on two bands because I was getting tired of trying to remember to check and see if they had a new album.  I might not notice for a while if a band has a new album.  Weird thing though is on most I really like I always seem to read about it somewhere on the net in a timely manner.

hardly! is my answer. often it's free association + serendipity for me. i would randomly go to a music site (or worse, Google an artist name up), click an external link from there, and another, so forth. i could do this for hours as "background" to listening to music. heck, i did not even know about that FF retrospective! i am so outdated...

Ilay, serendipity seems to be an option most people rely on! And I had heard about the live retrospective from Mollifire who posted about it last spring here on mog but then forgot about it, and didn't hear anymore about it till I looked it up on mog & amazon.com. Weirdly, it's not listed on their website!

I actually don't keep up much video wise. Mostly because I just don't have the time for it. This is what happens to people that have way too many obsessions and way too many boytoys locked up in their dungeon ;)

Really it's hit or miss, and I am often scared that there is a LOT that I am missing.  But I guess it comes around eventually, or it wasn't meant to be.

Like the whole +/- thing.  I totally could have missed out on what I consider to be my favorite band at the moment.

That's what concerns me about mass deleting tons of notifs or turning them off completely...what if, what if?

But being on Mog certainly helps me catch more gold.

Seems that's the general consensus Annie. Yea Mog certainly does make a major difference for me finding out about what's happening in the music world.
