Sappy Xmas! What Are Your Holiday Music Secrets?

Posted 12 months ago

Yup, it's a xmas post on Dec. 1st from me no less. I've already been listening to xmas music which is unusual for me. I had sworn off xmas music for quite some time due to a long term job I had at a winery where we started pushing the holidays at the start of September. Selling hooch & 'celebrating' xmas for THREE months out of the year really turned me off to xmas.

Enter Wayne Newton . . . . My dad had been requesting Wayne's 1966 xmas album for some time. I tried finding a digital copy of it online with no success. I asked my mom if she could ask my sister for the family vinyl copy as she had it tucked away somewhere, but my sis couldn't find it. So I had given up on finding it & for some reason it hadn't been reissued.

So I was pondering what to get my dad for xmas this year & decided to see if there were any new developments on Wayne's xmas album. Sure enough, it had been digitized and re-released just this past Sept. on Amazon.com! I swiftly purchased it, downloaded the mp3's & then made a hard copy for my dad since he's not into puters at all. I then sent it off last Tuesday before Thanksgiving so that he'd have it in plenty of time to enjoy for the xmas season.(I also found a cheap used copy of the lp on ebay that was a 'buy now'/no auction item & am going to send it to my dad for xmas proper.)

My dad received it Friday morning just in time for his trip to Seattle! He called me Sat. to profusely thank me for the surprise gift. He was so happy & he & my stepmom listened to it there & back. My dad said he even got all teary eyed listening to it & remembering all the fond memories of our xmas' past when I was growing up.

Seriously, this album was a family tradition. And when I acquired the mp3s & started listening to them I got misty eyed a bit myself along with a huge grin. So even though it may be full of CHEESE, I can't help but love this for all the wonderful memories it evokes. But really, listen Wayne's gorgeous voice. Talk about SMOOOOOOTH.

So what are you're cheesy xmas skeleton in the closet faves?

My folks have a christmas tradition that includes Bing Crosby's White Christmas being played over and over... and over and over... year in year out ... given that Christmas Day here is usually in the 100's and as hot as hades.., I cant help but laugh... but this year Im taking earplugs...urghh...lol..:-)

Zen, that is pretty funny if not quite unfortunate for you, lol! That reminds me of the time I celebrated xmas w/relatives near the equator in Brazil, which was so bizarre in that tropical climate(being from Oregon originally).

August, isn't so odd to think that for the majority of the world the idea of a white Christmas is a meteorological impossibility. I can't imagine Christmastime being above 55 degrees let alone in the middle of summer.

And being the traditionalist olds, my folks also insist that we have the full on roast turkey, pork, baked ham, roast chicken dinner with the full catastrophe of roast vegies as well as plum pudding, custard and cream... and mum insists on it all being piping hot as we are trying to keep out of a sun that could bake your brains... lol.. no shrimps on the barbie here... :-)

None other than Last Christmas....I loathe it when the radio stations spin it endlessly, but when I listen to it by my own choice, it works like a charm....

Ohmigosh yes, Last Christmas! Every time it comes on, I want to hate it, but it makes me warm and fuzzy inside. It's insidious, heh.

    *Misstee* Johnny M. definitely qualifies!

*Anna* I'm sure I've heard that song but I'm not recalling it now. Any artist who does it particularly well(or badly) for you?

*Dale* insidiousness seems to accompany most xmas classics, heh.

*Annie* that's another Wayne classic that's a family tradition although not a xmas one. What are your xmas family musical skeletons?

from you, no less! ;d damn you, Augustus, listening to this puts me proper in Christmas mode.

from waaaaaay back when i was a tiny tot, i really loved the Christmas carol "We Three Kings", which Wiki now tells me is by Rev. John Henry Hopkins, Jr. in 1857. well, i'll be danged. other than that, i can't think of any. does Purple People (Christmas in Space) by Tori Amos count?

gotta say every year I get excited for christmas and then department stores ruin it by playing christmas music in October. I guess I am a sucker for the classics, and if they are sung by any of the rat pack its cool with me

I listened to Alvin and the Chipmunks and Bing Crosby Christmas albums up until I was about 14. Then I habitually listened to "Do They Know It's Christmas" at Xmas time. I'm totally damaged goods now.

Erm...is that a Wham song up top?

*ilay* aren't I just xmas evil incarnate, getting you into the spirit? hee hee I always really liked 'Little Drummer Boy' when I was growing up. And you can count that Tori Amos song as a xmas song if ya want, I won't tell @;P

*Annie* UGH! I truly despise that McCartney toon. Talk about a dumbass song. I actually like that Wham song though.

*Kev* rat pack xmas classics offer plenty o' hefty cheese!

*Rei* Alvin & The Chipmunks xmas album eh? I think that might just take the cheesiness cake! I do like that 'Do They Know It's Xmas?' song quite a bit as well & it was a good cause too. And yes that's a Wham song up there!

*Sam* now I got into James back when I was growing up, when my musical taste was more suspect, heh.

I too am a sucker for Der Bingle, especially anything from the corny, politically-incorrect but addictive movie musical "Holiday Inn" - the film that actually introduced the tune "White Christmas" to the cinema. Bing sings, Fred Astaire dances. They bicker over babes. Fake snow falls. It's a riot.

Der Bingle, lol, I like that moniker Mike. 'Holiday Inn' is a corny yet classic film. You can't help but love it. Those were the days of 'innocent' movies. . . .

Being the original Mr Originality I also plump for Last Christmas. I absolutely love it - reminds me of the hundred or so times I've been dumped. But who's got the last laugh now, eh? Eh? (Correct. The women who dumped me have.)

Last Christmas seems to be a popular choice round here. I'd say you actually have the last laugh since you now have a wonderful partner in Jill who you'd not have met if one of those other women had held onto you!
