Well, this past w/e I accompanied my friend Annie as her plus one to Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate Park compliments of Blair who won the tix but couldn't swing the airfare(thanks Blair)! We had a blast & were able to see some top notch talent all weekend long.
We saw The Strokes headlining on Saturday night & they sounded incredible. And they played a few songs off their 3rd album which is my fave of theirs. Hopefully they'll be releaseing a new album sometime soon. The lighting was horrid though. They had no spotlights & no front lighting so you couldn't see their faces at all. But it was ok since there wasn't much to see since they didn't move around much. But like I said they sounded fantastic! So glad I got to see them live. Here's a vid of one of their songs 'Under Control':
One of several surprises over the w/e was seeing the band Chromeo on Sunday afternoon. By this time I had hit the wall I was so exhausted BUT when I hear some great dance tunes I just couldn't stay still & had to get up & dance. I got my 2nd wind which is what excellent music should do. I love to dance so much that it's just impossible for me to stand still when a good groove is going. They brought it for sure & I burned up the cement slab I was dancing on in the park, haha!
Here is their vid for the song 'Tenderoni':
Their tunes remind me of '80s funk bands like Shalimar & Prince. So funky! Play that funky music white boys! Here's another vid of them at the festival called 'Needy Girl':
There were plenty of other bands Annie & I enjoyed like The Temper Trap, The Whigs, The Soft Pack, Janelle Monae, Nneka, Phoenix, Gogol Bordello, Pretty Lights, Tokyo Police Club(who were pretty impressive live), Freelance Whales & Beats Antique. Had a great time & listened to a lot of great music. Fun fun fun, all for FREE!

Wow, August, sounds like a great time!
Yeah. Good times.
Colour me jealous! (It's a kind of purpley red)
Maybe Blair can win tix to ACL next! ;)
I caught Chromeo a couple of years ago at a Seattle street fest (Capital Hill Block Party). They won me over then and I took one of my favorite photos of that year.
Dar, it really was!
Deadman, definitely.
Dale, that would be awesome wouldn't it?
Amber, great pic. I should've known you were into them. Thx!
Democlez, Color Me Badd, haha!
Strokes = an awesome time, added bonus with Chromeo. Never heard of them before tonight but I am loving the song quite a bit
Definitely an awesome time. Surprised you hadn't heard of Chromeo. Their debut album was released in '08 but then again you've been playing daddy so it's understandable.
I had heard of them & heard a song or two but didn't feel compelled to seek them out further. So I'm glad I saw them live.
yeah, for the last few years I have found it tough to stay on top of things, guess I have to tend to my priorities
Mos def. Those kiddies come first!
sweet, i love me some chromeo. whenever it comes up on shuffle in my car, i break out the oldschool frogskin oakleys and rock the lot.
I saw Tokyo Police Club locally and they were very charming
Glad you had a great time----I'm jealous, too!
I've been getting into Chromeo for a while now---it started with their song Mama's Boy./
Sam, haha. Apparently they have a new album that's coming out this year I think they said. Looking forward to it!
Dar, yes, TPC are very charming to say the least.
Andrea, I don't think any musichead fan wouldn't be jealous! Not sure if they played Mama's Boy at the fest or not.
Good feature, Augusts!
Dope! I missed that show. Maybe next year.
Yes it was. Check it out next year.
You always turn me onto the coolest music, Augusts1 !! I'm already dancing at my desk. I hope all is well in your world! Big hugs xox
Hey yvw! Glad you enjoyed them. They definitely will get your booty movin', that's for sure.
Have you p/u any of Hot Chip's albums yet?
Chromeo does remind me of Hot Chip! When I saw the song, "Tenderoni" you know immediately thought maybe they covered Bobby Brown's "Tenderoni" !! But I love their originality!
I've been listening to Hot Chip here on MOG! I decided to let MOG be my major music player. I had an emusic account where I was purchasing music but I lost all my credits a few times monthly because I failed to download the music before the next wave of downloads were availale to me. If you don't download by a certain date, you lose your monthly downloads. Emusic doesn't even give you warning when this happens. I guess that's how they keep their prices low but I think it's horrible : /. I was so frustrated that I canceled my account. I had an annual plan. I had renewed my plan but in my renewal and at the same price I was paying in the past, they were going to give LESS monthly downloads. From 75 mp3s to only 35 mp3s at the same price I was paying for 75 mp3s!! Criminal. Because of that experience that is why I use MOG.com and pandora to listen to music. That's my long winded story as to why I haven't bought much music now. : X
Wow, that's quite a lengthy explanation, haha! Glad you're enjoying the mog player & listening to Hot Chip on it. That emusic sitch would be very frustrating, don't blame you one bit. I've been enjoying the mog player as well, it's a great interface but it's unfortunate the community isn't anywhere as great as it used to be. Such is life eh?
I'm sure that Chromeo's song 'Tenderoni' is a nod to BB since their music is so '80s r&b inspired.
Btw, I just watched a great simulcast concert by Jonsi(lead singer of Sigur Ros) on NPR earlier(it will be playing all day tomorrow I see). INCREDIBLE! It's really unusual music, as is Sigur Ros' but the visuals were pretty amazing as well. Check it out of you have the chance tomorrow.
@augusts1 LMAO - I know. I had too much to say but had to share. I think with these social media websites that you have to make it what you want to be. I think after awhile that the "newness" of it doesn't attract some and they move on. I love music so that's why I stay and learn as much as I can. I'm glad you haven't left. If you had left, I wouldn't have known about HOT CHIP! xo BLESS YOU.
Yes! I love the 80s when it comes to music! So electric, punky, jazzy and funky!
Ooh, I saw something that Sigur Ros did at the beginning of the year I believe on NPR so this will be a treat. Thank you so much!
Thx, glad I'm still here too & can share music w/you. I always appreciate your posts since you keep me abreast of what's going on in the r & b world.
Happy you shared all that! And yes, it certainly is what you make of it I suppose. Then again, you weren't here back when I joined in '06. It was a blast back then. Lots of great & fun convos going on. I've made a lot of great friendships w/those people who I've met in real life & have continued being friends to this day, like my friend Annieander who I went to this festival with.
Enjoy the Jonsi concert & check out his album on mog too. It's gorgeous music!
