El DeBarge Gets "Sexual Healing"

Posted about 1 year ago

More 'Jacopetti effect' going on. This post was prompted from a discussion on "*SerenityLife's*":http://mog.com/blog_post/view/167457#comment-630112 post about the DeBarge mother's autobiography.

Here's a funkier version of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" from a '99 compilation called "Marvin Is 60: The Tribute Album". El Debarge sings it. The red button is the album version and below is a live version(even though it's saying it's not available press the play button & it will play):

Such an incredibly pure voice!

No info on Youtube about this live concert version as to when, venue, location, etc. unfortunately.

Indeed a great cover of the song August. It is amusing to me though because in high school we used to run against a rival cross country team who had a runner that looked exactly like El Debarge. I remember after a race one time I mentioned to him I thought he looked like him, and he took it as an insult. Totally not what I intended, yet this post brought me back to then.

Haha, you had an El DeBarge backlash! I would think that that would be a compliment since El is quite good looking. Oh well, no accounting for some people's taste eh?

The missing word in both sentences is "heard" -- sorry I have this bad habit of ..... the key words. (Please put "forgetting" on dotted line)

*Michael* I have heard Harper's version, it's indeed quite good. I've noticed you leave out words quite often in your sentences but I quite enjoy it, since it proves you're a real fallible human being, hehe!

*Sam* oh yea, THE anthem of your life? No, it's MY anthem for my life because I heard it first way back in the day on the *radio* no less(because I'm old like dat @=P).

MY ASS got BEAT in 2nd grade because a boy would sing this song to me (Marvin's version). I loved the song so much but neither one of us knew what the real meaning of the song was about.

Marvin Gaye was from Washington, DC where I grew up so any time I hear or think of him, I feel as though that was my true home boy. I cried so hard the day he was killed because it really shook our town to a core.

I had NO idea El Debarge had done a rendition of the song. Tells you how smooth El's voice is and that he effortlessly sings the song as though it is his own. Thank you for sharing!

I wonder when El is doing another album! EVA ? I HOPE SO! I NEED him and Maxwell to release new material before I go NUTS!!

Your ass got beat because a boy sang this to you? Why did that happen?

I bet it was a sad day when your hero passed. = (

Seems like quite a few people didn't know about El's version, but I've had this cd for years. It came out in '99 & I think I got it in '00 or '01. He does have a silky smooth voice & he OWNS the song. Hope he releases something soon.

@augusts1 - the principal of the school I went to as a kid heard this young boy sing, "Sexual Healing" to me one day and she said we were in BIG trouble. She took out a wooden stick and beat our hands so hard saying that we better understand the consequences of listening to music that we did not understand. I was so upset at her. I do not remember if I told my Mom if she beat me because I was so upset but the lady who was the principal was a strict disciiplinarian and she was someone who used spanking a lot. Unforunately, the lady passed away this year (I went to the funeral too) and I actually loved her like a relative but that incident in my life is one I will never forget. My first introduction to how music can have multiple meanings.

[info on the principal of the school. Here - http://peaurl.com/m9ph]  Carlise Davenport was actually a well respected educator in Washington, DC and even Mayor Marion Barry's son went to the school because of what my parents had shared with Effi Barry how the school helped me claim my identity as a black child. The reason why I am an activist is because of Carlise Davenport who instilled in me my pride as a child. I was pretty much confused after going to one school where I was told I was dumb by my first grade teacher! Mrs. Davenport instilled my self-esteem and confidence in me after this experience. This is why I appreciate her and what she did for me.

I wil never forget the day Marvin Gaye died April 1, 1984. I was in 4th grade and the nuns in the Catholic school I attended shared with us that he had died when we were at recess. It was a big deal to us Washingtonians because Marvins's music was like a long lost friend throughout the city. I still do not remember WHY the nuns shared with us that Marvin Gaye died but I guess they realized that we would find out soon and they wanted to tell us before we heard it on the news. Everyone thought it was a practical joke but to know Marvin was shot by his father was just odd to us =(.

I think my family has the Marvin at 60 CD. I will have to *borrow* it from them.

Thank you for sharing! Great memories always when I listen to Marvin and El Debarge. Their music always soothes me and recalls memories from my childhood in Washington, DC!!

Wow, what a great response! It's amazing how educators can have such a major impact on us either way. I had an art teacher who totally took me under her wing & believed in my artistic abilities. I've always been a slow paced kinda person & I was always meticulous about my projects. She was very patient w/me & encouraged me & I was amazed at what I was able to accomplish. Glad to hear you had a major influence like Ms. Davenport.

I have a feeling that boy knew  & understood what he was singing to you though . . . why else would he choose that song to sing to you when there are so many other more romantic songs?
