Polychords Or How I Fell In Love With Matmos All Over Again

Posted about 1 year ago
3:47 mins.Just picked up the new Matmos "Supreme Balloon" yesterday and it is oh so great. "Polychords" is one of my faves so far but truly digging the whole cd. This song really jumps. Love it. Here's a fan vid someone made for it on youtube & it's quite appropo since the song sounds like Nintendo game music:The songs are surprisingly short except for the over 24 minute title track opus which reminds me alot of The Orb(an excellent comparison in my book).I also like "Mr. Mouth"(hit the red button) which is pretty damn funky. Good stuff, good stuff!

  2. Bartleby says I love GameBoy music, don't you? Both cuts are brimful of funk-psych loops and tones. It's like the vindication of MIDI. Who said the 80s were dead??? Seriously, I've been wanting to listen to the new Matmos too. So thank you for the preview, Aug.

  3. Augusts1 says It is good stuff Kev! Glad you enjoyed. Everything is well over here. Seeing lots of live music in the next week, which is always a great thing. Michael, I have to be in a certain mood for vid game music. Yes, I was going to say something about their tunes reminding me of the '80s. Hope this micro review will push you to check it out further, it's worth the effort!

  5. Augusts1 says Sure, a local band called Pride & Joy(r&b) on Thurs., then on Sun. afternoon The Phantom Jets(who includes mogger Sarah "*Shud33*":http://mog.com/Shud33) in San Fran, then Erykyah Badu w/ The Roots opening for her Sun. night in Oakland of which I'm really looking forward to.

  7. Rawkkiddoh says well enjoy the shows, I would love to see the badu/roots show. I am guessing it is going to be something else

  8. Augusts1 says You crack me up Mike! You're so not into weird music are you, hehe. To each their own for sure. But the weirder the better for me!

  9. Augusts1 says Yes Kev, Badu is AWESOME live. I saw her exactly 1 yr ago for the first time & was totally in LUV! Never seen The Roots but heard they put on a great show as well. I'll definitely be mogging about it after the fact, so stay tuned, stay tuned!

  12. Augusts1 says *Mike* that's why there's different people in the world, to appreciate the different styles of music. But good friends are forever! *Sam* I suspected as such! It's glitchy, electronic goodness, which i right down you alley.

  13. Pyro says I did see the video (MAME 32 lives) but in the middle of 'Mister Mouth' my brother was like ''What the hell are you listening at?!''. hahah, anyway. Interesting sound (?)

  14. HelenMarie says Hi Augusts! Ooo...jealous of your Badu/ Roots show, but will look forward to the report! I dig electronic but I need some acid jazzy feel in there or a few lyrics from time to time. I'm always glad to read about people falling in love with music, tho. ; )

  15. annieander says Thumbs up over here...liking it. Mike that is funny...I could never sit down and enjoy death metal...to each their own I guess.

  16. ardyjormkiv says the synth is yelling at me. that's very strange. i like it.

  17. Anna says This is a confusing post. The song in the red button is something I wouldn't characterize as "music". The song in the video is something I would characterize as "music", and music that I can fancy, at that. So you see, I'm all confused!

  18. Augusts1 says *Pyro* I wouldn't let your brother dictate what you listen to if I were you! Is he older or younger than you? I've gotten that "what are you listening to?" on numerous occasions from various friends & in relationships & I never let it change my musical taste, haha. I think interesting or 'weird' music is far more fascinating than the popular top 40 hits by far. Glad you like. *Helen* this will be my 2nd time seeing Erykah in a year(& my first seeing The Roots). This time is at an awesome venue, the Paramount Theater in Oakland, a natl. historic landmark. It's so beautiful. You bet I'll give you a FULL report. And Matmos have done the acid jazzy stuff in the past, they just move on to explore new musical territory w/each album. *Annie* I KNEW you'd be on board w/Matmos. That's my girl! I could never sit down & listen to death metal either, haha. *Ardy* yelling huh? That's an interesting way of putting it, lol. Glad you like the strangeness! *Anna* one woman's non-music is another man's music obsession. At least you liked the vid song. Not sure why the post is confusing, it just shows the virtuosity of Matmos' talent that they can create such distinct songs. And really you don't have to like all the posted songs, haha! Matmos is actually a very influential group in the world of electronica because of their willingness to experiment w/their sound & explore new musical horizons. They've worked extensively w/Bjork on her 'Vespertine' album as well as opened for her on tour & been her backup band. They've worked with quite a few other artists as well.

  21. poebegone says Aug! i haven't thought about Matmos since, oh, 2000? i simply have not heard much from or about them since that time, but i am all over this new one! thanks for re-hipping me to this dynamic duo. The Orb - amen, an excellent comparison in my book as well.
