Wow, I can't believe it's been 2 weeks since the start of Coachella. I was planning to do separate posts about the other great performances I felt were worthy to mention(& hadn't been mentioned much by others of the Coachella crew w/me) but decided to incorporate them into two posts. You're probably sick of hearing about it by now,oh well, too bad, heh.
First up, The Breeders were incredibly fun & down to earth Fri. afternoon. The onstage chemistry between Kim & Kelly was hilarious. And they rocked pretty damn hard as well despite sound problems. This clip of new song "Overglazed" shows the false start they had since they were off but it was too funny & just added to their charm(note Kelly's comment at the end of the song too "I didn't think that song would ever f'n end" & Kim repeats the last phrase of the song just to spite her!):
Fatboy Slim put on an amazing set in the Sahara tent Fri. night. It got me a movin' and a groovin'. I couldn't see him at first from my viewpoint just outside the left side of the stage/tent but I gradually worked my way in to where I had a decent view. Fatboy was surprisingly animated as DJ's go. He was moving around on the stage, dancing at points & generally engaging the crowd to clap, dance, etc. His light show was pretty impressive too. Check out this clip that samples various songs throughout the set(it's a long clip but you can fast forward through it too):

That Fatboy Slim set was fun, as long as I was there. It was too weird seeing the girls in front of me obviously tripping on E, though. My fatherly instincts were starting to kick in. If I hadn't left them, I likely would have told them off. Heehee

Micahel...I don't know about you, but i am a bit skeptical of the reviewer and this review. (thanks to you)
My Trusted MOGs
LOL -- Mike, you know that it was just a whimsical reflection on my part. Incidentally, I didn't take your comments above at face value either :p
My Trusted MOGs
there is nothing much funner then pestering August if you ask me.
My Trusted MOGs
like the cool uncle that buys you beer when youre not old enough.
My Trusted MOGs
Michael thanks & YES the heat of the bands are still burning in my brain from the fest!
Marigold please be skeptical, consider it mutual my friend, heh. Funner? I think the correct verbage would be 'more fun'. And of course pestering each other is all part of the fun between us.
Sam yup, just like THAT cool uncle! Aren't you 21 yet?
My Trusted MOGs
Enticing reportage, August. Now, I'd like a nice Breeders/Fatboy Slim bill at the Warfield. (Hold the desert...)
My Trusted MOGs
Thanks Mike. Highly doubt this double bill would happen anywhere but at a festival. Don't like the desert huh? I actually enjoyed it for the 5 days I was there but don't think I could handle more. After the fest I went to Joshua Tree National Park right near there & drove through the 70 plus miles of mainly Mojave desert. I played U2's "Joshua Tree" cd the entire time I was there too. Such an epic soundtrack for an epic place. Loved checking out the odd looking Joshua Trees, cacti, wildlife & landscape, which truly was like being on another planet. It was quite beautiful.
My Trusted MOGs
It's not the desert. It's my aversion to gigantor festivals. I've always wanted to go to Joshua Tree (even before the U2 album), but haven't made it there as yet. Then again, I've always wanted to see a MOGger do karaoke at the Pig n' Whistle, but somehow missed that, too. DESPITE BEING ACROSS THE STREET AT THE TIME! (Whew. Finally got that out of my system. Really.)
My Trusted MOGs
Ahhh I see, I can understand that. I used to have an aversion to gigantor fests too but got over it when I went to see Moby's Area 1 & 2 fests & saw Bowie which made a believer out of me. Sure there are drawbacks w/the crowds, expensive food/drink, rude behavior, outhouses, etc. But for my money they are a better way to see a whole mess of great bands for less than seeing each one individually.
Haha, you were right across the street from the Coachella moggers(I went straight to Palm Springs so I wasn't there. I like to get to my destination when I travel)? Too bad you didn't know they were there.
You've not been to Joshua Tree huh? U2's album when it came out & I saw the pics they took I recall thinking that I wanted to visit some day cause it just had a stark beauty. 21 years later I finally made it! You have to go Mike, it's an experience like none I've had before. I saw plant life there I'd never seen anywhere else. I highly recommend it.
My Trusted MOGs
I'll make to Joshua Tree as soon as I can. Meanwhile, don't think I haven't done my share of festivals, because I have. Fun's fun, but ridiculous prices and crummy amenities and a city of lunatics aside, I'd rather concentrate on one or two acts in controlled circumstances. Better for music appreciation. Different strokage, I guess. That said, I am thrilled that all of my MOG pals (and some non-MOGgers I know) had an amazing and gratifying time at Coachella.
My Trusted MOGs
i like funner things. it has a certain mid-western tang to it.
My Trusted MOGs
Mike TK Oh I'm sure you've done your share of fests! And I really can see your point. If you can afford to see bands individually I agree, it's a much better way to see a band. I just like to get the most out of my concert dollar. Glad you're thrilled we had an amazing time at Coachella.
Marigold is that a mid-western tang or twang?
My Trusted MOGs
never gave the breeders a listen -> though not my style, I bet is was cool live.
My Trusted MOGs
Tyler, if your into Yngwie I wouldn't imagine The Breeders being your style, lol. But they put on a great show. Thanks for the comment.
My Trusted MOGs
Word -> it was a good listen though, I am always up for a new sound to my ears. That's how I got introduced to Meg & Dia, which I like for some reason...a lot. very unlike me, but if I had stayed narrow-minded, I never would have found out.
My Trusted MOGs
Yea, I'm constantly surprised by what my ears enjoy. I'm what you'd call an ecclectic music enthusiast. If it's done well, and shows talent then I'm usually down with it, although I'm not much for top 40 country. But even artists I'm not wild about I can & do acknowledge their artistry like Dixie Chicks for example.
Not heard of Meg & Dia, what style of music are they?
My Trusted MOGs
Top 40 country, is that the devil's list? ha
Meg & Dia are a more poppy version of a Tegan & Sara type of music -> two college chick sisters, acoustic, whiny type voice, I guess it would be considered indie? or emo-indie? or 2 hot chick rock? I don't know -> I'll see if I can dig some up and post it, I'll let you know
My Trusted MOGs
No doubt, how did you know? lol
They must have an artist lounge here, I'll check. But I'm not too keen on Tegan & Sara, I have to admit.
My Trusted MOGs
Me neither -> actually find them leaving a nasty taste in my eardrums -> Meg & Dia is one of those names I would normally delete out of my inbox, or skip right over, so you gotta hear a tune or 2 -> laters! JD
My Trusted MOGs
I went to their mog lounge & there's no songs uploaded in the database but there was a link to their myspace page so went there. Gotta say I'm not finding them too interesting, not my style, too mainstream emo for me. And I listened to all the songs they had on their page.
My latest obsession is The Kills I love the raw rockin' sound they produce, it's quite catchy. I guess you could say I'm more into alternative rock & really like unusual or different styles of rock.
My Trusted MOGs
The Fatboy set sounds awesome! Too many DJ's don't get all funky and into it.
My Trusted MOGs
I lurve me some animated DJs....haven't seen monsieur Slim in action yet, but I think it's meant to be :)
My Trusted MOGs
I see it in your future dah-link, hope it's soon. I don't know what his touring schedule is, oh wait, here's his myspace site for you to check out.
My Trusted MOGs
Thank you, uncle A! Nothing I can attend, unfortunately, BUT..not to worry, it's fate, baby :)
My Trusted MOGs
Yvw! Yup, fate is at your mercy @=p !
My Trusted MOGs
I'm late to the party, but... nice post! Dig the Breeders! (I gotta find a way to get my vid camera to not distort... yours sounds great!)
My Trusted MOGs
Hey thanks Zen. I think The Breeders fans are the best! I actually didn't record that vid, just found it on Youtube.
