Prince Is A Creep!

Posted almost 4 years ago
Saturday night at Coachella Festival after stellar sets by Kraftwerk & Portishead, the Purple Man himself performed. He did many of his hits like 'Controversy', 'I Feel For You', 'Seven', 'Purple Rain', 'Cream', 'Little Red Corvette' among many others that were mindblowingly great. He also did a few cover versions too. He did Sarah McLaughlin's beautiful song "Angel" but his cover of the Radiohead classic 'Creep' was transcendent. It took me a minute to realize what song it was since I was so surprised by the choice. But it's really an incredible version. Check it out here:(beware, the sound quality isn't the best but this one was the better of the vids posted on youtube)So many great bands & live performances & then Prince on top of everything else. The man owned that stage & the crowd! He has such a commanding presence, you can't help but pay attention. And with all the hits he's put out, he's become such a major part of the pop culture landscape. He's been making music since the late '70s which is amazing. I never thought I'd get to see Prince either, just cause tickets are so ridiculously priced for big names these days(and I refuse to pay those prices for a single artist). This was just one of the many surprises over a wonderful music packed weekend. More to come, so stay tuned kiddies!

  2. Mike the Knife says Actually, Prince always struck me as a little creepy - but, of course, massively talented and entertaining. That said, thanks for posting this.

  3. Dale says Wow, that clip's sound sux but no matter, it was still a wonder to hear.

  4. mogpatrick says R. Kelly has a creepiness to him as well, but that doesn't make his songs/abilities any less amazing

  5. Augusts1 says *Doodette*, the reason I focused on this song is that it was the better of the two, although 'angel' was gorgeous as well. He also did a cover of The Beatles 'Come Together' too that was great. Prince, no matter what he does is mesmerizing. So did you actually hear him perform it Faith? *Mike* yea, I can see that w/his androgynous look, it would throw people off & be a bit weird. He always made me wonder about his sexuality, that's for sure, with his style, song subjects & petite stature. But definitely massively talented & entertaining.

  6. mogpatrick says Was it legal to film him?
    Permalink posted 04/29/2008
  7. Augusts1 says *Dale* it does suck but I just had to post about him covering another fave artist of mine. It HAD to be mogified, haha! *MogPatrick* agreed R. Kelly is a genius but his creepiness doesn't lessen his talent. And I don't know about the legalities of filming Prince, although a few of vids of this cover had been removed from youtube, so I guess his lawyers were threatening to sue youtube for allowing it to be posted. I don't get that, since I think any spotlighting of the star I think would be great PR. It's crazy!
    Permalink posted 04/29/2008
  8. mogpatrick says that is what i thought, cause they have shut down his fan sites, and i was thinking they might have someone looking to catch people recording at one of his shows
    Permalink posted 04/29/2008
  9. Marigold says crazy report sir. It looks like Prince's minions have already had the video removed. It says it is no longer available. Personally I was a little surprised he was the head liner for this festival.

  10. Misstee says I've heard mixed reviews of his performance but the Sarah McLachlan cover would have had me running for the parking lot full stop.

  11. jenny says I was just talking to my husband about Coachella, and we agreed (yes, shocking) that Prince was the only person on the bill that seemed worth forking that kind of cash over for...because he's a genius, because he doesn't play a lot of shows anymore, because he is (among other things) a great bass player (my husband mostly on this), and because he's a little strange...I mean what great rock and roll star of the past 50 years has *not* been a little strange? So I think you were lucky to be there...even if he had sucked, which it sounds like he didn't, it'd have to be interesting.

  12. amber says He didn't suck...despite what some hipsters say. Call me old (but I don't suggest it), call me star struck (which I'm not), call me what you want...Saturday night you could call me thrilled. Prince is an icon of the past 2-3 decades that hasn't blended into the oldies stations. His music is still unique and fresh because he is himself unique and fresh and genius. And, no...I am not a Prince fan. I only know the words of the songs that got large amounts of radio play. I did not watch his super bowl half time show and have never seen him before and will probably never see him again. But I am smart enough to recognize enormous talent when I see it, like I did Saturday night. nice post my dear!

  14. Augusts1 says *Mike* yea, it was strange that Prince was playing there but then again if you think about it he has really influenced so much of the funk & r&b stylings of so many of the latest hipster bands, so really it isn't all that strange. I thought it was an outrage when they had Madonna perform last year but she's also influenced so many alternative groups over the years. I'll try to find another one. Prince is being finicky about his image being broadcast w/o his consent. But then again if he consented to play for 4.7 mill then he consented period! *Misstee* not a Sarah fan eh? haha S'ok, I used to be into her bigtime but I haven't listened to her in ages since her music just started sounding recycled. *Jenny* I so agree with all your points made except that I went to Coachella to see Portishead especially, The Breeders, Love & Rockets, Kraftwerk, Fatboy Slim & Hot Chip but came away with a new appreciation for Verve, & many other bands. And even though it's a fairly expensive fest, I feel it was worth every cent since Coachella is an overall experience, & there is nothing quite like it imho. Also, part of Prince's mystique IS his strange androgyny. He was amazing & I was lucky to be there! *Amber* thanks dear for having my back. Hipsters be damned, lol! So true, all that you have stated. *David* I thought for sure you'd have been there. Was expecting you to pop up at some point. Glad to hear your friends concur w/my assessment. He did kill it!

  19. mollifire says glad to hear you had a fabulous time! i was a bit dubious about Prince at first, but i figured with all the controversy about how much he was paid to perform, he'd have to kill it. I agree with Dale, even with the sound quality on that vid, you can still sense the awe. i am so jealous you were there to see him, but waaaay more jealous you heard Portishead, Kraftwerk and Aphex Twin!!! oh, if only i could live vicariously through you!

  20. Augusts1 says Hiya *Rhonda*, I actually had replaced the original vid I posted w/another one someone posted & they got this one too. Go to Youtube & put Prince Creep in the search feature & that will pull up any vids posted recently. Hopefully you'll get to see it then. *Charley* 'Little Red Corvette was siiiiiiiiiiiick!!! I was 20 people back a little to the right of the stage(squished like a sardine) & was singing at the top of my lungs to it as he sang it. It was so much fun to see him perform all those hits. Ah-May-Zing!

  21. indiepixie says ok. i am getting lambasted here w. my opinion. true- i wasn't close to the front. true I am not a Prince fan. I don't like Jazz pop so sue me. So I am inevitably at a default. However, I just felt he did not interact the audience well (at least compared to Roger Waters - who KILLED it). I know. I am sorry. I know he is part of American pop legends. But no matter what - playing Sarah McLaughlin covers ain't gonna wake up a crowd of tired 20 year old post-12 pm. :)

  22. Augusts1 says *Mollifire* you didn't miss a thing w/Aphex since he only DJed & didn't perform anything from his vast catalog, one of the few disappointments! I loved getting to see Kraftwerk since they've been around as long as Prince has & who knows how much longer they'll be around. Portishead was my impetus for going & so glad I did. You're more than welcome to live vicariously through me, heh.

  23. Augusts1 says Dudeola(Faith), Prince knew who he was playing & pandering to, those of us that are older & have more disposable income than the 20 somethings. There were alot of people who just came to Coachella only to see him so, he's no dummy. He played stuff that would be more appreciated by the 30 & older set & by the time you're our age, Prince won't need your money anyway(especially after that 4.7 mill payday! haha). Sorry, that's the reality.

  28. mollifire says oh Augustus, you made my day! while i'm truly disappointed that Aphex Twin didn't rock your world, i am relieved as hell that i didn't miss something spectacular. he rarely plays out, it's been ages, and presumably he could have been on the Bangface Weekender lineup that same weekend. So, i thought he chose Coachella (who def could afford to pay him twice as much) and was going to show america how it's done! figures he just dj'ed though. what is it with him and Venetian Snares? they are both pioneers of a whole subgenre of electronica, yet they rarely deliver the goods live.
    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  29. fistula spume says Omigah. I would love to know what records Aphex Twin was playing. Overall sounds like a really great show. If I was a rich man I would've gone. I'm with mollifire. Knowing that another human has seen all those artists in one place has turned my jealousy factor up to 11. The post was great but these comments are most excellent too.

  30. Lizziegreeneyes says Prince & his crew were in rare form... playing hits, songs we'd never expect to hear & covers that were TASTE to the EEEEE !!! I am with Aug & Henry on this one Indie... the man is a musical genius & he rocked the crowd - his movements, his guitar work, his vocals & the come hither eyes were about as getting the audience involved as you can get at an outdoor venue sharing 5 stages total. Everyone I was with was kinda hohum about seeing Prince (Cept Aug & Henry) but after they witnessed the DISMEMBERMENT that Prince pulled off - it was the talk of the timeshare... KILLED doesn't even get to the half of it. The man rocked it & HARD & ALL NIGHT LONG in that set of his. I was exhausted that night & by the time he took the stage, I was on my feet revived & ready to go !!!

  31. Dale says And don't even get me started on the fact that he brought Morris Day (and Jerome!) to the party as well. "Jungle Love" was absolutely revitalizing; I thought I had completely come down from my Portishead-induced euphoria, but BAM was instantly ready to party some more. What more can you ask for?

  35. Augusts1 says *Molli* glad I could make your day. I think one of the things about Aphex is that he does what he wants, not what his fans want. Grrrrr! *Sam* the tent where Aphex played was overflowing w/people & when I realized it was just him spinning(& just sitting there as well) I was outta there & on to another band(Aesop Rock & The Swell Season). It would be cool to know Aphex's set list though I agree. And I've wanted to go to Coachella since I first heard of it so, thanx to a nice tax refund this year I was able to go(and also inexpensive lodging through Amber & her timeshare). Btw, the comments on this post have definitely eclipsed my post, haha! *Lizzie* so true, all your comments! Prince turned even the half hearted fans. And "Jungle Love" had all of us in an uproar! *Dale* Morris Day & Jerome owned that stage for sure, as well as Sheila. I was reading somewhere on the web last night that Chaka Khan sang on "I Feel For You" but seriously, I don't recall seeing her at all. *Helen* Henry sure has a knack for humor don't he?! *Pimp* all bow to his Purpleness!

  36. amber says I was one of the guilty HO-HUM people De-Lizzi-oso spoke of. I mean, I felt I'd never pay the money to see Prince in concert alone, but since he's there and I'm there, you don't pass on a chance to see an icon if only so you can say you did. But WHOOOO MAMA, he was amazing. There's a reason he has lasted the ages and that's because he can still bring it. The crowd was mesmerized. Even ho-hummers like me.

AHH!! You had the Prince experience. I was waiting on twitter.com to see if they would share the set list through the at & t blue room which they did not. WAAH. But then I was able to check youtube the day after and I heard Creep and almost LOST my mind. Princey POO POO is the bomb when it comes to singing slow songs. I mean there is nothing his shortness cannot do. I truly appreciate his vibe and love of creating art and turning other people's songs into his own. I mean he CLAIMED Creep. Pretty much surprised me.

In September 2007, I flew to London to see Prince with my Mom. He blew my mind again. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 concerts and 2 aftershows that I went to. I almost TOOK Prince's hat from him at the after show but then I thought that would be RUDE but I am pretty much convinced that he saw me ROLL my eyes at him at the after show when he did not choose me to dance with him on stage. I mean I can bring CRUNK booty shaking to the UK but I guess he was afraid of that? Okay, I am completely kidding!

Thank you for sharing. Here is a link to my pictures and last.fm journal on Prince in London.
