The Soup Dragons or ISENIH (I'm So Early '90s It Hurts)#34

Posted about 1 year ago
3:46 mins. I'm back to my Early '90s posts once again. The Soup Dragons were a Glasgow, Scotland band who formed in '85. They released numerous singles that were released as a compilation in the US only as "Hang Ten" in '86. They then released their debut "This Is Our Art" in '88. The video/song below was part of a rare Shelter video compilation and not on either of their previous albums."Can't Take No More":I didn't get into them(or even heard of them) until '90 when they released their album "Lovegod" stateside. The first single was a remake of The Rolling Stones song "I'm Free" featuring Junior Reid, which ultimately became their biggest hit:But the song above at the top of the page, "Mother Universe" was the song that really convinced me to pick up their cd. The whole album was pretty damn great. But my favorite song on the album was this one:"Backwards Dog":Two years later they released "Hotwired" and their song/vid "Divine Thing" received heavy MTV rotation. They released one more album in '94 called "Hydrophonic" which I know nothing about & I think didn't do too well here."Divine Thing":I was able to see them live in Portland, OR at the Roseland Theater on June 17, '92 with Catherine Wheel opening for them. Talk about an incredible double bill. Catherine Wheel was just amazing as were The Soup Dragons. Good times, good times!

  2. Bartleby says Going back to the 90s roots... Soup Dragons to me has a distinctive sound but I've never got into their pop mixture. So thank you for this booster shot.

  3. Augusts1 says Yvw B, glad I could give you a booster. They certainly did have a very distinctive sound & were majorly influenced by the Manchester rave scene, hence the huge change in their sound from their early singles/debut to when I was introduced to them w/the "Lovegod" cd.

  4. Marigold says wow. this is a total blast from the past. I remember them, but never got into them much. Thanks for the blast back.

  5. HelenMarie says Oo, kept kissing, kept kissing.....no joke I was just thinking about kissing this morning (I could branch off into a whole other topic, but I'll try to stay on track here) I'm dizzy now after all the corkscrew segments in the 2 middle video's! They also seem to have something for the jail house look with their black and white strips featured in 2 of the videos as well. I totally remember that "Divine Thing" song (I _did_ like it.....I was 16, so!!) And thanks for reminding me of the Catherine Wheel album I have! Time to give that a listen again!

  6. Iren says I remember now... I remember yesterday....I remember the Soup Dragons, they are one of those bands that is always pop up when I am talking about the 90's one hit wonders. I never realized how much of that jangle pop they had in them...

  8. Neill says One of those bands along with the Primal Scream who just clicked into the whole Chaos Theory, E taking, Trippy, Hippy, Indie dance scene of the late 80's, early 90's UK dance scene....

  9. Sam The Artist says ive heard that rolling stones remake, but i didnt know it was them. i didnt really picture that sound with the album cover of the kid with the spoon. 'divine thing' really reminds me of a song that i cant remember the name of. this is going to drive me nuts! :P

  10. annieander says Named after the Soup Dragon from the British tele show The Clangers. The Soup Dragon appears around 5:12 in the vid. Just a little trivia. My husband used to watch the show when he was young, and told me about the Soup Dragon and the Clangers.

  11. Augusts1 says *Mike* yvw, yea definitely a blast from the past! There was just something about their psychedelic 'hippy' vibe that drew me in, lol. *Sunny D* I LOVED 'Divine Thing' & ran out & bought the cd immediately. I also love kissing, it's such an art!("he kept kissing me, kissing me, kissing me") Btw, I have all the Catherine Wheel cds if you might be in need of them I could post one or two on the darkside for you. *Iren* nice Beatles ref. there. I don't think they qualify as a one hit wonder since 'Mother Universe', 'Divine Thing' & 'Pleasure' received radio & MTV play as well as 'I'm Free'. I guess it depends on your definition of one hit wonder too. *Misstee* yvw, glad I could give ya a bit o' The Soup Dragons edu. *Neil* so true. They totally changed their sound between their debut & the "Lovegod" cd. *Sam* their early sound was more befitting of that album cover you posted- cheesier & cheekier sound/look, of which I didn't discover till much later & didn't much care for. Here's a vid /song of one of their earlier ones(ick!): *Annie* true. I didn't know that, thanks for the info. & clip. Never heard of The Clangers but that show would be very annoying to watch at any length since the 'voices' of the clangers grate on my ear. I had to skip to The Soup Dragon character & then stop it, lol.

  12. darmuzz says Very nice, August! Sounds like they were ahead of the Britpop wave.

  13. Augusts1 says Thanks Dar, glad you enjoyed it. Had you heard of them before? I don't think they were ahead of the Britpop wave but were part of the undulation towards that. They were more a part of the scene that spawned The Mighty Lemon Drops in the mid '80s. See my post "*here*":http://mog.com/music/The_Mighty_Lemon_Drops on them.

  20. hawaiianpunch says OMG! I've been on this Britpop resurgence over the last week and you come along and bring it all back for me. I'm in heaven. I have a Peel Sessions version of "I'm Free" and the Farm's "Groovy Train" on a sampler disc from Q Magazine from way back in the day. I gotta pull that out and see what else I can find. And you can't have this discussion without Ian Brodie and the Lightning Seeds.

  21. Augusts1 says Haha, well, glad I could be of assistance Hawaiian! Of course Lightning Seeds would be part of the discussion as would Blur, Radiohead, The House Of Love, The Charlatans UK, Suede, Happy Mondays, & oh yea those Oasis wankers, lol.
