WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A Dark Horse(My Last Minute Top 20 Of '07 Addition)

Posted about 1 year ago
Now that it's '08 I can post my top 20 album list of '07. Yea yea, I know you've all been IMPATIENTLY waiting for this one, haha!I've been listening to alot of new albums to make sure I didn't miss anything that should be included on my list. I've heard some good stuff but most of it just didn't keep my attention long enough. Like The National- huh? Just don't get the furor over their cd. Sigh . . . .But kudos to Helen & Anna who've been ranting about Patrick Wolf all year. Honestly, I did enjoy the songs/vids I heard that were posted BUT didn't take the time to listen to the whole cd. When Anna posted her top 10 cds recently I saw Wolf's cd & was reminded I needed to give a listen. So glad I did. I've been listening to it ALOT & I loved it so much that I had to include it on my list. Wolf is a genius! With so much unusual instrumentation & well written songs & singing. It's really difficult to peg as to the type of music, it's so unique. So I've officially been EMCDed again. Thanks Helen & Anna! And now here's my list:Top 20 Albums Of '07 -1. Blue finger - Black Francis2. Friend & Foe - Menomena3. Widow City - The Fiery Furnaces4. The Reminder - Feist5. In Rainbows - Radiohead6. White Chalk - PJ Harvey7. Zeitgeist - Smashing Pumpkins8. 1. Marigold says I actually called in sick for work today because of my anticipation of your list hitting the mogwaves today! If I had known it would be so late in the day, I would not have had to do so. Oh well. Great list. I have to get off my ass and listen to Menomena. I dont think I have even heard a note of it and I keep seeing it on everyones list. Take care mon!!!

  5. Augusts1 says Thanks *Mike*, how did you know I'd be posting this today oh prescient Lord? That's what happens when you jump the gun. Yes, you best give Menomena a listen straightaway, they are worthy of every bit of praise you've read/heard! And quite impressive live when I saw them in SF in March too. *Bartelby* yes, her new album is pretty damn good. *Dach* thanks!

  6. mktackabery says Nice list brother mine; I am trying my best to understand Patrick Wolf. Really. He just seems like warmed over Bowie with Beck's turntables to me. I know I am missing the greatest artist of the century, yadda yadda yadda. Every time I think I might dig him, I listen to the whole thing and end up throwing the headphones across the room. And, come on!!! I can't take a guy wearing a unitard seriously. Jesus please us. It seems you have just been rocking out all year! :)

  7. Augusts1 says Hahahaha, well if you've given his cd a listen or two then I guess you can't expect anymore *Tripletta*. He's definitely one of those artists you love or hate. He reminds me of a female version of Feist but with a bit more flamboyance. He seriously has quite a freaky 'sense' of fashion, that's for sure. Not something I could get into but that's me. It's funny but I don't really think of Bowie listening to Wolf, which is unusual since I usually pick up Bowie's influence since I'm a Bowie fan. I haven't even figured out who Wolf reminds me of yet other than Feist.

  8. Marigold says I will get right on it. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to get on the Menomena. I will report back with my findings.

  11. david hyman says that patrick wolf was damn cool.

  12. Augusts1 says *Sam*, haha on the headturner. The guy is just so f'n _talented_ despite his eccentricities you can't help but be enamored by him. *David* isn't that a great live clip of Wolf? I just had to post it, it was so damn cool.

  13. FluxCapacitor says The only other person I've seen with the criminally underrated _The Good The Bad & The Queen._ Good man!
    Permalink posted 01/03/2008
  14. Augusts1 says "Criminally underrated" is an understatement! I adore that album but then again Albarn can do no wrong. The album snuck up on me & then _stayed_ on my MP3 player for months on end. It just creates such gorgeously subtle soundscapes that totally creep up on you if you give it a chance(which is why I think more people didn't give it the props, they didn't give it enough listens).

  15. FluxCapacitor says Yes, it's a curious album in that it took me a few listens to understand what was going on. I had to get past the fact that it isn't noticably riffy like Blur or big and poppy as with Gorillaz...that it's actually something different altogether (and kudos for Damon for changing up his style once more.) It was funny, then, that when I got comfortable with the tunes, all I could think was how "immediate" and melodic it was! And yeah it's got great staying power -- it probably outlasted every other album in my iPod last year. Probably because I heard it nowhere else but on my IPod. I'm now going to seek out his soundtrack work. Have you heard any of it?
    Permalink posted 01/03/2008
  16. Augusts1 says The only soundtrack work of his I've heard was on the 'Trainspotting' ST & that was just one song called "Closet Romantic". I actually didn't really care for the singles I heard from TGTB&TQ(an insufferably long band name though). I kept reading rave reviews & wondering what all the fuss was about. Also was disappointed there was so MUCH talent in the band(a supergroup fer chrissakes) for such minimal, low key songs. I finally decided I needed to hear the cd in full & that's what finally convinced me. And I've loved all of Blur & Gorillaz, so the fact that it took me some time to get into really says alot. And it does have staying power!

  17. Lizziegreeneyes says A'right, a'right... I'll check this one out already ;) Somehow missed the Anna & Helen posts... but saw his name on yours & Dale's posts... I will get on it ASAP ;) Great list Aug... really great, but I do lurve The National - when I finally got on that band wagon... Interpol's 2007... meh, not my cuppa compared to prior efforts. Such is the loveliness of MOG - we can inform, dissagree & still end the evening listening to Green Eyes by Badu :)

  18. bloodtea says Great list mister! I feel a bit guilty for Siouxsie not making it to my top 10, really cool album.. anyway

  19. darmuzz says Nice list, August - you know I have you to thank for Fiery Furnaces and Wilco! BTW, Patrick Wolf is considered to be eccentric? This is news to me ;)

  20. Augusts1 says *Lizzie*, thanks, those posts by Helen & Anna were before you joined I have a feeling. And yup, cuppa tea, cuppa tea! *Andrea* thanks dear. Don't worry, Siouxsie just missed my top ten which killed me to do but there were so many others that I listen to more than it. It's a gorgeous album really. *Dar* thanks. Glad to know I was the impetus for you to get on board w/both those groups/albums. And did you watch the vid of Wolf above or any of his live performances? Eccentric isn't an adequate term for him but I still adore him.

  21. Anna says *throws her good manners and self control out the window* That was one fucking cool intro to Accident Emergency. He's such a fucking great performer. I think I fell in love with him all over again now, oh lord. Very cool list, uncle A, we have much in common!

  23. Augusts1 says Thanks & yvw my dear niece. Yea wasn't that a fucking cool intro? I watched numerous clips on youtube of him live & he really is an amazing performer. I need to see him now, NOW *NOW*!

  25. QueenofHell says Thank you for the thank you! So glad to have turned you on to Mr Wolf. My favourite of his albums is Lycanthropy. I was fortunate enough to see him the year before last at Koko in Camden and then, again, this year at the tiny wee venue at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. I met him, too, at the aftershow bash my pal and I had unwittingly found ourselves at (it was in the ICA bar, where we'd headed for a drink after the show). He's a very charming and coy young man. We were so drunk I ended up with a sample cd of his support act (Bishi), which I think she must have given me, as we were chatting, but when I found the cd in my bag in the morning I wondered where it had come from. I like Bishi. I've posted about her before. She labels herself folk / glam / powerpop. Check her out: http://www.myspace.com/bishimusic

  26. Augusts1 says Sam, yea he's definitely got some hot beats in his songs & there's alot of live vids on youtube of him performing. Glad I could EMCD you, heh! Helen, yvw! I recall you posting about his show in the tiny venue this year. Sounds like you had fun meeting him & hanging w/him after the show. He seems like he'd be a very genuine yet entertaining bloke as well as charismatic. I also recall you posting about Bishi too & I liked her.

  27. darmuzz says August, what? Just because a greased-up indie boy crawls around the floor wearing red shorts, you label him eccentric? (LOL, LOL!)
    Permalink posted 01/04/2008
  28. Augusts1 says Haha, I guess that's my criteria for eccentric(or at least one of the criteria!)
    Permalink posted 01/04/2008
  29. goodmusiconly says shame, I haven't even heard the Black Francis album yet! Good to see Menomena up there, I do like that album a lot. Nice list Aug!
    Permalink posted 01/06/2008
  30. Augusts1 says Fo major shame Erin @=P. It's an incredibly rockin' throwback to Pixies' days. Menomena is pretty damn awesome as well & if you've not seen them live you must, since they are amazing in person.
