WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The Diamond Bird And The Dave Bee. . . .

Posted 8 months ago

I just can't seem to get enough of the new The Bird And The Bee's album 'Rayguns Are Not Just The Future'. There are numerous songs on this album that I adore but one that keeps me smiling over & over again everytime I hear it is their song called 'Diamond Dave'. Inara sings about her youthful idolization of David Lee Roth of the band Van Halen. Push that bright red button atop the post & wonder at the songwriting skill of TB&TB.

I just love Inara's phrasing. The song is so hilarious and really speaks of the obsession many of us have for our musical teen idols. I love the line she speaks 'Come on Dave, show me what you've got. I can take it!' Who wasn't enamored w/Mr. Roth back in the day? He was so incredibly charismatic, you couldn't help yourself.

Personally, my childhood music idols were Karen Carpenter(my first album was 'Close To You' fer cryin' out loud), Elton John, The Eagles & Queen, among others. Inara just totally captures what obsessive fans go through when they are taken with their idols & how they become such a part of us.

And if you haven't heard this album, I say, get thee to a cd store post haste. It's just so wonderful. TB&TB have really stepped up their game with bigger production values in the songs. The just sonically bring it on this one. And can I say how much I love the song 'Polite Dance Song'? Ok, I fuckin' love it! And the vid is hysterical. Here it is for you viewing pleasure:

And as a special super duper deluxe bonus bee special, here's their live cover of Hall & Oates' 'I Can't Go For That(No Can Do)':

Inara is SO adorable! I think I'm in LUUUUUUV(Love that dress she's wearing in the live clip, so gah-roovy man!

Thanks for the B&B extravaganza. This is the third or fourth exposure to them that I've had (MOG, Paste sampler) and I have yet to encounter a track that I'm not totally charmed by. I've got to get their CD. It's going on my Amazon wish list. Right now.

In LUUUUV? Let's hope Mike (the Knife) won't see that statement, or else you're in a lot of trouble! heheheh

Good choices and good postings, uncle A :)

PS I want a dress like the one she's wearing in the first video!

*Mark* yea, they are totally worth the effort to pursue their music. With you being the pop maven you are you'll thoroughly enjoy both their albums. Sheer pop heaven!(And I'm quite aware of the cartoon character Auggie Doggie, although it was a little bit before my time).

Yvw *InRumfordie*! You can't help but smile when you listen to the 'Diamond Dave' song, then again most of their music has wry lyricism in place.

*Anna* I know Mike TK will see this & I'm ready to fight him for Inara's honor(if she has any left), haha! That dress your coveting will look great on you during your coming Shoe Planet reign!

Thanks for sharing the vids and tunes Sir Augustusness. While I enjoyed what I've heard I'm not sure its something I could latch onto. Inara is a cutie though, I'll give ya that.

Preachin' to the choir, man. As for being in LUUUUUV, get in line. I will offer kudos for grabbing the clip of the Hall & Oates cover for our enjoyment. What a perfect meld of artists and song! They should release a studio version. And that dress? I'd play Twister on her - um, with her - in a heartbeat.

*Anna* you didn't give me that high position in the Shoe Force, I demanded it! @;P

*Marigold* yea, yea, yea, I knew you'd give in the more you listened, sucker! heh

*Mike TK* I had a feeling you'd enjoy the cover. If you click on the vid twice & go to youtube you'll see a few other covers they do well too like 'How Deep Is Your Love'. As for playing Twister on that dress, lol, I hadn't even thought of the game while looking at her in it!

*P-Wagz* Yvw, she does have a voice of an angel.

*Sam* I've been aware of them for awhile & appreciated their vids but it wasn't until earlier this year that I took the plunge. They were at Coachella last year & but they were first up on one of the days & all of us mog crew weren't together enough to get there that early(which was around 12:30 or so), lol.

August: Well-acquainted with their covers of the BeeGees' "How Deep Is Your Love?," Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" (both of which are available in studio versions - hope you've heard them), some Christmas carols, and a few other chestnuts. I have been, after all, a major fan since their first album. But, in a quirk, had not encountered their take on the Hall & Oates number (and there are other very good clips on YouTube of them doing that same song at different venues). BTW, I think there's no reason to denigrate Lily Allen in a comparison with TBATB, particularly with Lily's recent and quite terrific album having been co-written and produced by none other than TBATB's Greg Kurstin.

Sorry, but I think there's EVERY reason to denigrate Lily Allen. She has no respect for others & just says things mindlessly that are mean & cruel. I also feel her 'talent' is way overrated. She can write a song, for sure, but I really can't stand her 'singing'/rapping, it's flabby & lifeless. Doesn't matter to me who produced, even producers can make major sidesteps. Granted, Mr. Kurstin is extremely talented but I don't have to like the people he produces, as much as I like his music.

Yikes! Vituperative! I guess that, barring criminal behavior, I judge the art, not the artist. As an Anglophile, I have no problem with Lily's "chav" side - and actually like her working-class vocals. But YMMV - and apparently does. I suppose that we should respectfully agree to disagree on this one.

Oh Mike, of course we're pals. I've nothing against you at all, in fact you're one of my fave trusteds because I know I can disagree. As you say 'Mileage may vary'. I just don't get any mileage w/Lily. I'm sure there are artists that I enjoy that you don't, like Courtney Love perchance? She's a fine example of someone who lives her life w/a 'I don't give a shit what others think, I'm gonna be me' attitude & gets into lots of debacles yet I STILL love her. Most definitely agree to disagree on this one.

Vituperative. . . had to look that one up, what a word! Good one. But what is YMMV? Not familiar w/that acronym

That would be "Your Mileage May Vary." ;-)

Glad to debate an esteemed MOGger with civility. And I'll add that Courtney is an old S.F. acquaintance from before her music and film careers - and her national notoriety - made her tabloid fodder. We always got along famously, even after her marriage to Cobain (although, to be honest, we haven't spoken since his death). As it happens, I think that Live Through This is a bangin' good album. But what has she done for us lately?

Ah ok gotcha on the YMMV, thanks for clearing that up! It's always great to debate w/most moggers since they understand that it's all about individual taste. So you were friends w/Courtney huh? Very cool. Too bad you aren't still in contact w/her now(or maybe that's fortunate for you now, lol). 'Live Through This' is a classic. I really enjoyed 'America's Sweetheart' far more though. To me it's a really rockin' album. From what I've heard of her new material though I'm not all that excited about it. Doesn't seem to be as cohesive & tight as her as Sweetheart was. Oh well, she's put out some great albums up till now. We'll see though.

Someone has decided to un-imbed the first video...God I hate the idiots at labels and wherever that decide this stuff. But the live video made up for any loss. What charm! Why hasn't Daryl had them up to his house for a live session???

I hear you on the un-imbed phenomena, eeeediots! Glad the live vid made up for it. They are incredible live(although I've not seen them in person. . . yet!)

I'm sure the H & O meetup will happen eventually since they are recording a full album of H & O covers.

It was the last big hit Nelly had, about 3 years ago, produced by Pharrell. Basically a very ordinary hiphop grind with the chorus based around the H&O 'Maneater' chorus. You probably heard it and never made the connection. (!)

The "sample", as it were, is the actual chorus hook that she sings: "She's a maneater, maneater, etc." No actual H&O recording was manhandled in the making of the song. Yeah, it's a sign of the state things have come to when the video is more interesting than the song.
