Radiohead . . . Just A Band?

Posted over 4 years ago
Ok, this really kills me to admit it but the new Radiohead album just does not WOW me much. I've been a fan since their early emergence in the '90's and have just adored them & their musical output. I even saw them live(the most I've ever paid for a single artist too)on the "Amnesiac" tour, which is also my favorite album of theirs.I guess I've just come to expect them to push the boundaries on their albums, is what it boils down to really. Mind you, I think 'In Rainbows' is good, no doubt about it, but it doesn't really tread any new ground. In fact it sounds like a retread of their old material. Hehe, I KNOW this is gonna ruffle a feather or two with the hardcore fans. Trust me, I am a hardcore fan. I've waited for their last four albums with much fervor & once received them listened to them TO DEATH[except this one]!This album would be an instant classic for any lesser band. But it's their own damn fault for raising the bar so high, damnit, ha! I really ADORED Thom Yorke's solo album 'The Eraser' since it had lots of glitchety loopy electronic shit on it. It also had much of his trademark paranoia on it as well. But R's current album just doesn't have the edge that has been there in the past.Maybe it's just that I'm in a different place in my life. Since I've joined Mog I've been introduced to so much new music that I guess my old flames are fading a bit. Kinda makes me sad in a way. But then again, there's all this fantastic music I've discovered so that _really_ makes up for it! I think also I have MADD[Music Attention Deficit Disorder, not Mother's Against Drunk Driving hehe]. If something doesn't keep my attention I get distracted by what does keep it. So there you have it, I'm a PROBLEM child, give me some Ritalin & fire at will!I will always adore Radiohead for their uncompromising vision & devotion to their music. But I'm a fickle music fan goddamnit! http://www.inrainbows.com/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiohead

  1. Mike the Knife says Oh, they're OK. Give these eager young fellers a break, August.

  2. Augusts1 says Sheesh, can't I just be objective w/Radiohead for once & THEY give me a break Mike?

  3. bloodtea says get your point and kinda agree. every band has a _not-so-great-as-the-last-ones_ album (I'm not saying _In Rainbows_ is a crap album, au contraire my friend, *but*, like you said, it doesn't really tread any new ground) let's hope Radio's next one gets there and smacks our heads with their wacky good stuff

  4. Augusts1 says Yea I suppose your right BT. Alot of people were turned off by their experimental albums of which I loved. So I guess turnabout is fair play! Radiohead was due for a not-so-great-as-the-last-ones album. And maybe this is their attempt(and apology) to win back the fans they lost to 'Kid A' & 'Amnesiac'.

  5. Marigold says I love the new record. I like the more stripped down sound. I love that they have taken some of the best elements of their last few records and rolled it into one. Don't get me wrong, I love the Kid A and Amnesiac era stuff. But for me, it is nice to kind of see a "back to the basics" record. I think I have already listened to In Rainbows more then Hail to the Theif which is my least favorite RH release. Radiohead to me has proven that they still can destroy when it comes to just writing great "normal" songs. It is funny that you mentioned maybe it was not the music as much as your MADD. I think having MADD is a prerequisite for joining MOG.

  6. Lizziegreeneyes says I have yet to meet a Radiohead album I haven't liked... they just fit so many of my moods... I am digging In Rainbows quite a lot, but as I said... it's a love relationship for me... long term, in it for life kinda thing. Hail to the Theif may not get tons of airplay for me Mike, but I dig that one quite a lot as well... it's less connected I think, but I like what that says about the world today... specifically the US & our present president...

  7. davesonic says In Rainbows is better than Hail to the Theif but still pales in comparison to Kid A or OK Computer. That being said, an ok Radiohead album is still better than 3/4's of the music out there.

  8. walkingthecow says Radiohead tends to outdo themselves. I agree that In Rainbows isn't the most groundbreaking for them. In a way I am disappointed, but I also think it's a great record as well. Not their best and not their worst.

  9. Neill says Rainbows is just another shade of Radiohead, I prefer dark grey myself....

  10. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says How dare you??? How dare you??? HOW DARE YOU??????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I've never been a fan. I like the band but they've never appeared on a list of favorite albums etc. They've just been there and I've liked listening to their music.

  11. jameson says IN RAINBOWS, to me, easily ranks in the top 3 Radiohead albums. I think it is generally brilliant. It has its dullish spots, but there's also beauty in those low points. And they counter with such amazing highs that it is hard to remember where those lows were. But again, to each his own. Radiohead are like that. Ask 10 fans which album is their favorite and you'll get seven different answers. And then ask Blair, and he'll change the conversation!

  12. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says "And then ask Blair, and he’ll change the conversation!"............................. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......................so how 'bout The Hold Steady?

  13. Augusts1 says *Mike* I thought 'Hail To The Thief' did the stripped down sound far more effectively. When 'Hail' came out I listened to it everyday at least once a day for a solid month. Not so w/this one. I also heard a bootleg of the songs performed live a few weeks prior to the release of the album so that probably didn't help either(but the songs live were good nonetheless). You're right about MADD being a req. to join Mog! *Lizzie* I'm in it w/Radiohead for life as well. I just don't have the same adoration for this album as their past ones. I agree w/you about the subject matter of 'Hail', it is just so appropo to the politics that are happening now & when it came out. *davesonic* I love how every RH fan has their fave RH albums. 'Kid A' , 'Amnesiac' & 'Hail' would be my top three. Last time I listened to 'Ok Computer' it just sounded so dated to me but is still a classic. *Walkingthecow* I would agree RH does outdo themselves. I've thought on several occasions 'It took them 3 yrs. to do this?' Yet it's still a great record. *Neill* definitely just another shade of RH gray! *Henry* oh hush, silly man, lol! Kinda surprised you're not a hardcore RH fan. Thought they'd be right down your alley but then again wtf do I know about Danes?! *Jameson* let's keep Blair outta this convo, since he despises RH, lol! I agree, every RH fan has their faves which is the beauty of their artistry really. Even their low points would be high points for other bands.

  15. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says The danes love Radiohead. Of course I like them but...................I guess I've just listened to other bands instead. I'm actually not a hardcore fan of anybody...........................................................................oh sorry. I totally forgot about Feist!

  16. Anna says *overcoming surprise* Well, I like 'em, but I was never in love with them. Yes, they are just a band. Just like all of them, so I wish that people (I don't mean people here) would stop sucking their cocks (I stole that from David -cyborg), 'cause that usually doesn't boost my appreciation levels of a band. I have more respect than love for them (I stole that from Pekka, I really don't have anything of my own) and I agree with Neill and with you (OK, I really need to come up with my own stuff hahahhah).

  17. Augusts1 says *Anna*! Gasp! How can you say 'Fuck Radiohead' haha? And yes that is SO me in the pic. *Henry* um, yea, we know you're obsessed w/Feist, DOH!(totally understandable though, she's such a hottie, I love her too) How could you forget Feist fer chrissakes, heh!

  18. Anna says [oh no, now he's gonna see the "cock" part....*runs away*]
    Permalink posted 11/14/2007
  19. Augusts1 says Come back here you nasty little neice! I love that you felt free enough to use the word cock. But I agree with what you are saying about uber fans fawning over RH no matter what, it does get old. And yes you do need your own material, heh!

  20. Anna says Heh well I always believe that words are just letters in a row, and it's how we use them that makes them what they are, so yeah, I say every word both in English and Greek :) Eh, stealing everybody else's stuff is more fun and less tiring :P BTW, I know we don't agree, but the way you feel about In Rainbows is exactly how I also feel about Our Love To Admire.

  21. Sam The Artist says i (PERSONALLY) think that radiohead makes good songs but not good albums (again thats just me, and im full proofin it because i know a lot of people would disagree with me haha). i normally cant sit and listen to a whole rh album all the way through, however, the eraser was brill front to back.

  22. Augusts1 says *Anna* when I wrote this post I recalled your post about 'Our Love To Admire', so I wondered if you'd bring that up. It is exactly how you felt. *Sam* hey welcome back, how was your trip to paradise? Now that's an interesting thought about good songs vs. not good albums, not heard that one before. Of course I don't agree w/that but I do agree 'The Eraser' was entirely brill, fo sho!

  23. Marigold says I totally aggree with what Anna said David said that there is to much Radiohead cocksucking going on. I had a good friend call Thom Yorke a god. I think that my friend is an idiot for saying that. Although he did qualify his statement by saying god with a small g.

  26. chucky says I never really listened to Radiohead. I should probably get on that one of these days..heh. But, I totally feel you on the whole MADD thing and we're all enablers..haha. (Listening to the song as I type - yes, I really need to give Radiohead a shot. Not bad at all.)

  27. chucky says Crapola, I forgot to mention that your new avatar caught my eye. Is that our August in the flesh?? How you doing handsome? ;)
    Permalink posted 11/14/2007
  28. Sam The Artist says thanks, paradise was everything i could have asked for! but yeah, i have every radiohead album (except rainbows) and i can honestly say none are on my top ten albums list. i just get so bored. but they have so many great singles, that a best of mix would be uhmazin.

  29. Augusts1 says Hehe *Mike*, I wouldn't say Yorke is a god but he's pretty amazing. He's just a human being after all. And there's too much mentioning of cocksucking on my post here, it's making me er, uh, well never mind, lol! *Dar* sorry for the distraction! Radiohead is an English band who make alternative rock music @ ; P, heh. And yes you can bite my Ipod anytime, hehe! *Chucky* why am I not surprised by your Radioheadless self, lol! Get w/the program girlie! You always crack me up. And yes that is me in the flesh & I'm doing well gorgeous!(Finally decided that it was time to unveil the real me) *Sam* glad to hear you had a great trip. It just boggles my mind that you'd have every RH album but think they're boring to listen all the way through. I guess that's why they make best of comps. for people like you!
