Went to see TFF at The Independant in San Francisco(where the Mog 1 yr. anniversary party took place)over a week ago on Friday Oct. 19th. They were fantastic in concert! I was quite impressed at how they recreated their sound live.Arrived late(which is my M.O. if you haven't figured that out by now)so ended up totally missing the opening band Pit Er Pat. Not heard of them prior to this so don't know if I missed a good group or not. Used to enjoy seeing opening bands but lately not into it.Here's a pic I took with my camera phone. I would've gotten closer but being a tall person I didn't want to get in front of all the shorties in front of me, lol(it was a VERY polite crowd, really):
Anyway, The Friedbergers, Eleanor & brother Matthew were in fine form this evening. Eleanor came out in a high fitting pair of blue pants with suspenders & a funky, colorful blouse. She is just elegant in anything she wears really. Matt was in jeans & a untucked in dress shirt. Eleanor proceeded to announce that they had just released their new album "Widow City" a week or so ago & would be doing alot of songs off it.They proceeded to launch into "The Philadelphia Grand Jury" the epic first cut off the new cd(and the song uploaded above. And these days in concert they are pared down into a 3 piece with an incredible bass player, drummer & of course Matthews whimsical, wizardry at the keyboards. There were no guitars played at all(except the bass). Eleanor didn't play anything but a tambourine. The Friedbergers & Co. are lean & mean these days. If you haven't heard 'Widow City', it is much rockier than any of their previous outings. And in concert they rocked even harder! They were so amazingly tight and on top of the jaunty time changes in their songs I was just stunned at their virtuousity. And Eleanor was rockin' the mic with her singing. It's just f'n incredible how she is even able to recall all the damn lyrics in their songs. It's mind blowing really.Matthew was incredible in his keyboard playing too. His hands were moving so amazingly fast it was trippy. And he had full mastery over the band as well. He would direct them with single hand gestures or a shout. Really fun to watch them like a well oiled machine at work! They ended up doing around 12 songs of the 16 off 'Widow City'. They did a few songs off their other albums as well but like I said the focus was on the new material. They played about an hour & 1/2 total. If you get a chance to check TFF live GO! You will not be sorry. Highly recommended in all their Beatlesque live glory. Here's a live clip of "Japanese Slippers" off the new cd, done in a waltz style, very cool(filmed at Northsix club in Brooklyn, NY 1/5/07): http://www.thefieryfurnaces.com/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fiery_Furnaces
