The Fiery Furnaces Live Are The Shiznit!

Posted over 2 years ago
Went to see TFF at The Independant in San Francisco(where the Mog 1 yr. anniversary party took place)over a week ago on Friday Oct. 19th. They were fantastic in concert! I was quite impressed at how they recreated their sound live.Arrived late(which is my M.O. if you haven't figured that out by now)so ended up totally missing the opening band Pit Er Pat. Not heard of them prior to this so don't know if I missed a good group or not. Used to enjoy seeing opening bands but lately not into it.Here's a pic I took with my camera phone. I would've gotten closer but being a tall person I didn't want to get in front of all the shorties in front of me, lol(it was a VERY polite crowd, really):Anyway, The Friedbergers, Eleanor & brother Matthew were in fine form this evening. Eleanor came out in a high fitting pair of blue pants with suspenders & a funky, colorful blouse. She is just elegant in anything she wears really. Matt was in jeans & a untucked in dress shirt. Eleanor proceeded to announce that they had just released their new album "Widow City" a week or so ago & would be doing alot of songs off it.They proceeded to launch into "The Philadelphia Grand Jury" the epic first cut off the new cd(and the song uploaded above. And these days in concert they are pared down into a 3 piece with an incredible bass player, drummer & of course Matthews whimsical, wizardry at the keyboards. There were no guitars played at all(except the bass). Eleanor didn't play anything but a tambourine. The Friedbergers & Co. are lean & mean these days. If you haven't heard 'Widow City', it is much rockier than any of their previous outings. And in concert they rocked even harder! They were so amazingly tight and on top of the jaunty time changes in their songs I was just stunned at their virtuousity. And Eleanor was rockin' the mic with her singing. It's just f'n incredible how she is even able to recall all the damn lyrics in their songs. It's mind blowing really.Matthew was incredible in his keyboard playing too. His hands were moving so amazingly fast it was trippy. And he had full mastery over the band as well. He would direct them with single hand gestures or a shout. Really fun to watch them like a well oiled machine at work! They ended up doing around 12 songs of the 16 off 'Widow City'. They did a few songs off their other albums as well but like I said the focus was on the new material. They played about an hour & 1/2 total. If you get a chance to check TFF live GO! You will not be sorry. Highly recommended in all their Beatlesque live glory. Here's a live clip of "Japanese Slippers" off the new cd, done in a waltz style, very cool(filmed at Northsix club in Brooklyn, NY 1/5/07): http://www.thefieryfurnaces.com/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fiery_Furnaces

  1. Viva La Britt says Ooh, the folks are kind of kooky but in a fun, non-annoying way (you hear me, Of Montreal?)- I'm understanding why you dig them. So glad they they did not disappoint live!- there's nothing like a subpar show to almost make one change how they feel about a band.

  6. Augusts1 says Yea*Britt*, they are fun & kooky. They make me laugh when I listen to their music but it's also some seriously great stuff too. I have heard lots of good stuff about their live performances so I knew they would be great. I have this cd posted on my M page so have a listen to their new album! *Meko* yea it's amazing the sounds they are able to recreate live. Glad you liked 'em. *Ash* wow, you've made an appearance on my post, I'm so honored, lol! Yes they do have a bit of Of Montreal in their sound but I like these guys MUCH better personally. I like Of Montreal though, don't get me wrong. But TFF have 5 cds so far whereas Of Montreal has only one. *Mike* thanks! They're crazy good! They have a wonderful organized chaos to their sound. I love these guys SO much. Check out their new cd on my M page. *Sam* tis true, they seem to be able to keep their sound fresh & interesting w/each new cd they release & keep us guessing which I love. They are musical geniuses.

  7. bloodtea says Really great! times like these I wish I had a time machine and transport myself back to October 19th - preferably in SF.

  10. Marigold says Thanks I will check out the M. I have heard of them but never heard their music. The music seems to have more twists and turns then an old mountian highway.

  11. darmuzz says I was telling my daughter this week about The Fiery Furnaces and trying to explain how inaccessible they were. "Like Deerhoof?," she asks. "Yes, but less melodic and cute," I said. Now their new stuff has proven me wrong! I was reading a quote from Eleanor recently in which she talks about how hard it is to memorize the lyrics of her songs. The Decemberists must have that problem too! I think Of Montreal has about 12 releases, just not major label. Love Fiery Furnaces, hope I am as lucky as you and get to see them sometime!

  12. Augusts1 says *Blood* agree to your agreeing, heh *Mike* it's funny how few people are actually into them. I've been into them since '05 or so. The rest of that w/e in San Fran I'd talk about them to people I encountered & no one seemed to know them- in SF for chrissakes!! There were alot of people at the concert but it wasn't sold out at all either. I LOVE all the twists & turns in their music which makes it fascinating to me. *Dar* interesting. I think they are quite accessible & far more melodic & cute than Deerhoof. I really dislike Deerhoof because of the lead singer's shrill voice & the angular, inaccessibility of their music, personally. To each their own eh? Lol, I bet Eleanor has a difficult time memorizing her lyrics, who wouldn't? Yea The Decemberists too. I had no idea Of Montreal had so many cds or been around that long! I looked em up on Wiki & they have 8 since '97 & a new one coming out next year, so 9 total. Since you're already a fan, get thee to a venue near thee when they come to your area, I command thee, lol(what's up w/that use of old english, eh? lol).

  13. darmuzz says First I must commandeth unto them to forsake the tour venues of greatest convenience, and journey unto the furthest outposts of the continent...where I dost live...

  14. Cody B says I dug their last one and it looks like you've earned an EMCD on number 2..You wouldn't have thought they'd pull it together live. Excellent write-up.

  15. meko says Augusts, They just are not getting enough (AIR TIME) THEY need a better promoter Its Really a shame that they cant get some one to believe in the band as much as the band believes in its self. It happens more than i would like to KNOW I have been in the music biz for 35 yrs and i have seen ALOT.

  16. Augusts1 says *Dar* go on girl commandeth them, heh! *Cody* hahhaahahahaha an EMCD! I love it, thanks for the kudos. *Meko* I'd agree but then again there is so much great music out there it's not a suprise they don't get more air time. They do need a better manager/and or promoter or record company. Being in the music biz for that long how could you not have seen alot, lol

  19. Augusts1 says I had a feeling you'd seen em before *Mike*. Really surprised there was no one else there & reporting on Mog from the bay area. I know Hyman is a fan as well. But there had to have been other Moggers there I'm sure. Is Mog love waning in the bay area for TFF? Yvw, *Meko*, luv you too.
