My Date With Robert Smith

Posted about 1 year ago
So, over a week ago on Saturday, Oct. 6th I had a hot date with Robert Smith from The Cure. We were to meet at The Download Festival at Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View, CA according to his personal assistant who had contacted me to inform me Robert had accepted my invitation. Boy, was I ever excited!I arrived a few hours after the festival started around 5:00 p.m. I heard Black Rebel Motorcycle Club starting their set as I was walking into the theatre with "I Took Out A Loan" from their new cd "Baby 81". I was surprised that they were playing so early. I found a schedule & they WERE playing earlier than their 6:15 slot. When I got into the theater they were playing one of their earlier songs which I wasn't familiar with but was really good. Their set was pretty damn spectacular since they sounded great, recreating their songs off "Baby 81" to a tee among their earlier music. I thoroughly enjoyed their set & they proved to be excellent showmen. I found out that She Wants Revenge played right before BRMC, so I surmised that an earlier band had canceled so they moved everyone up. I was disappointed to not see SWR but really I was here to see The Cure, so it didn't matter that much. I had seen SWR on a Lollapolooza web simulcast 2 years ago so I had seen them perform before. After BRMC I walked around the grounds since I had no interest in seeing the screaming emo schlock of AFI. I got a cool free t-shirt from Volkswagen that they silkscreened right there in the booth. I did this last year too & it was a favorite t-shirt over the previous year. FREE is a very good price! So once I got my free T I wandered over & caught the last few songs of Metric, who I must say made me regret I missed the rest of their set. They were that good & rocked hard. Emily Haines was a pillar of rock goodness, jumping frenetically around the stage singing in her skimpy miniskirt. They rocked hard!Once Metric stopped playing Gooferman started up on a stage right next to them. I've got to say they were entertaining to watch since there were tons of costumed performers on stage in klown makeup & performers on stilts walking through the crowd but I wasn't impressed with them musically. Very repetitive & not too interesting to listen to imho. Kings Of Leon were up next and they put on an amazing set. They sounded fabulous & rocked hard but since I had only heard one of their songs previously I found I wasn't too enthused about their music. Which was really unfortunate since they put on a great show. Just not my style I guess. So finally I was to meet Mr. Smith. I couldn't believe it. I'd been a fan since 1985 with 'The Head On The Door' album and hadn't seen them live in person before. Oh, yea, I have several concert dvds of them in my collection but still not seen them in person. When they finally arrived onstage Robert waved to me, and I of course waved back to him. This was our date, Robert's private performance just for me!(Oh never mind the 1000s of others there to see them, they didn't matter since Robert & I had a date). And seriously they did not disappoint! They played for 2 hours & 40 mins. including the encore. I was in disbelief as they worked their way through their set thinking, my goddess, this has to be the last song & they just kept playing. It was certainly a mind blowing set with 33 songs in all. F'n amazing!Robert & crew started out with the first song off "Wild Mood Swings" called "Want". One of my favs off that cd(and a very underrated album I might add). Porl Thompson on guitar, Simon Gallup on bass, and Jason Cooper on drums proved to be a formidable force and recreated their sound quite well. After the first few songs I was trying to figure out who was playing keyboards and came to the conclusion they were playing the keyboard parts on the guitar, which really surprised me. They did a great job & had me fooled for awhile, looking to find the nonexistant keyboard player, lol!I was also amazed at how many songs they played off my favorite Cure album "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me". They didn't play the usual hits off it either but rather some more of the lesser known songs. The song I loaded up "Shiver and Shake" above is one they played and a fav. I know Robert was playing these just FOR ME to commemorate this special day of our officially meeting. He knows what I like, heh. Here's a clip from the fest of the song "Wrong Number" off of "Galore"(not much on the visual but the sound is fairly decent): They also played a couple of new songs off their upcoming double cd. "Please Project" was a really great song and rather upbeat. Youtube had a vid of it but the sound was just so crappy I didn't want to post it but you can hear it "*here*":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCveIQjPuvw.And the encore was completely a flashback to old school Cure via 9 songs off of their first three albums. So Curably delicious! The set list will be in the comments.

  7. Marigold says Who does a 9 song encore? Why the Cure does a 9 song encore. Holy shit! You must have been on cloud 9. Thanks for the great review of your date. I was riveted from the start to the last word.

  8. Augusts1 says *Tracing*, they are touring next spring so you might check to see if they are coming near you. Here's a link to their website & their "*schedule*":http://www.thecure.com/default.asp. *Dale*, twice huh? How indulgent of you. Yes the encore alone was amazing. *Chris* thanks. You must catch Metric live. I am just starting to get into them so that's why I didn't get my butt over there right away. At least I caught a few songs, better than nada! *Walking* yup, I'm a hardcore fan & love all those albums. But "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" will always be my fav since it was the first album I bought of theirs. *Anna* I knew you'd pick up on the date theme. No, no dinner, that wasn't part of the deal. I had my dinner before getting there(I refuse to pay exorbitant $ for shitty food at concerts). He did play "Lullabye" though. So I guess he did call Spiderman on me. VERY Curalicious, for sure. Big scenes are not my thing & since I'd seen SWR before it wasn't much of an issue for me. Would've been nice but I'll catch them another time I'm sure.

  9. Augusts1 says Mike, yea they did that rather than make us go through the formality of 2 or 3 encores & lose our voices, heh. Glad you were 'riveted' by my review. I was indeed on cloud 9, it was "Just Like Heaven"! You must be a big Cure fan too I take it.
    Permalink posted 10/15/2007
  10. Marigold says Good idea instead of doing 3 encores and wearing out voices. Hmm. Do I like the Cure? Yes. Do I love them to the extent that you do. No. But here is the deal. It may seem weird, but I LOVE your enthusiasm and passion in regard to your experience. Honestly for all I care you could have been talking about going to see Stryper and as long as you were passionate in your writing about your expereience. I would be rivited. I am truely fascinated with peoples excitement about music and your review bleeds passion and true love and I love that kind of stuff. Keep it up my friend. Well, if it was about Stryper maybe I would not be riveted. But I am sure you understand my point. :)

  13. Augusts1 says Omg Stryper?! How could anyone be passionate about them, lmfao? Yes I do understand your point Mike & it is cool to hear about someone else's passion/obsession with a band/artist. Doesn't seem weird to me at all especially since most of us here on Mog are passionate about music anyway. That's what brings us all together that we are music junkies! Let's hear it for musical obsessions, HOORAY! I actually loved your post yesterday & that vid you posted. I understood your love/obsession with it & the fact it made you say something silly like 'Will you place Your Hand in Mine and see where this song brings us?' That was prime, lol!

  15. dachmo says During the Kiss Me tour I was lucky enough to see them twice, once in Manhattan and once at the beach on Long Island, so I understand your passion. The Head On The Door album ruled my walkman for all of '85 and much of '86. Didn't know you were going to this, sounds like you had a good time.

  16. Marigold says I grew up in a pretty strick Christian home in regard to the devils music. When all us Christian youth group kids got us some Stryper we were scooping that the holy crap up. Stryper for me is like any other moggers Poison and Warrent phase. Thanks for the kudos on my post. Glad to get your approval. (cheesy love song lounge music was the soundtrack for that last sentence)

  18. Augusts1 says *Anne* yes, those thousands of people should consider themselves extremely lucky to get in on our date. *Sam* I was really amazed at the length of the set. It made me so happy to get to hear so much of their music live that I've listened to over & over for so many years. Yes, the time did fly by yet it also seemed to be a time warp where I enjoyed every minute & tried to slow it all down mentally. *Dar* thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Hahahaha re: you're AFI comment. So not into them at all. There was this teenage girl that started talking to me on the way back to the car who was raving about AFI & when I told her I purposely missed it she could not believe it. I then asked her if she caught the Metric, BRMC or Kings of Leon sets & she said no on all three accounts. So I gave her shit for not seeing them & giving me shit! We agreed at the end to check each other's bands out once we got home. It was pretty funny. *Dave* that is so cool you saw them on the "Kiss Me" tour, that would've been incredible. Did you make a video of those concerts, lol? I did have a great time, especially seeing The Cure for the first time ever. *Mike* yvw. yup, me too, strict Baptist upbringing. I didn't get into Stryper much though, I just didn't care for their style. I recall my mom having a shit fit when she came into my room when I wasn't home & looking at the album cover for Elton John's "Capt. Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy" & confiscating it cause there was a naked lady w/a bug head on the back of the cover. She threw it away too. Oh geezus! *Amber* I so wish you could've have been there too. Hahaha, double dating w/the KOL guys! Right!

  19. goodmusiconly says August, the one and only time I ever saw The Cure was on Halloween in 1984 ... it was an amazing show, and is one of my favorite early concert memories. But the better story is that several years later, I was working at an historic hotel in Boulder, where The Cure just happened to be staying. As luck would have it, a close friend of mine worked for the events council that had booked their show ... I met up with her, and then with the band in the hotel bar, and we all had drinks together and talked for a good part of the night. The following day, after they had left town, I found Simon's cross amulet/necklace had been left behind, as well as Borace's (drummer at the time) passport and other a few other misc.items. I grabbed everything and turned it in to the front desk. But some of the things were never reclaimed, and were given back to me - one very cool item I still have is Boris' tape of New Order's _Power Corruption and Lies_. For many years, The Cure's copy of that album is the one that I played in my tape deck.

  20. Augusts1 says Erin, wow that is a great story. How cool to have seen The Cure so early on. I don't doubt it was an amazing show. And even better to hang with them, have drinks & chat over the course of an evening. But then to get a copy of NO's album that belonged to The Cure, talk about a super score! I don't know that I'd have even played the tape cause I'd consider that sacred & want to keep it in great condition. Thanks for sharing that story. Robert & crew must've been really interesting to talk & hang out with.

I got to see the Cure a few years ago, there wasn't a 9 song encore so *I am* jealous! But they jammed for us nonetheless. Sounds like a fantastic show! Good for you. I thought the first 30 mins of the show were a little shaky due to mixing, and perhaps Robert and the boys drinking, but quickly turned for the better.. I was pleasantly surprised by the setlist, it wasn't the typical watered down north american festival set.. I almost died, with the hope that I'd finally get to hear the a Forest outro into Forever, but yet again, thwarted.. Here's a good live recording from the show I got from a friend of Porl.... -S

  25. Augusts1 says *Sunshine* I'm a professional music ho, thanks for asking, heh! I think we got an extra long show & encore because they had rescheduled their fall tour till next spring due to not being done w/their new double cd. I was surprised they stuck w/doing the Download Fest & so happy they didn't reschedule that too. So I think they were making up for that. And no, no telling naughty bits were shown, silly(you crack me up)! Glad you got to see The Cure & enjoyed my post. Always love your input dear. *Dudeofmusic* thanks & glad you enjoyed it. 'A Forest' is a great & classic song. I'll have to check that out with Lol Tolhurst, should be interesting. *Bloodtea* speechless? You? Wow, I'm impressed then with my writing skills, lol! Glad you so enjoyed my post. Thanks for the kudos. How's that eye doing btw? *Snakama* that's so cool you were there too. And 25 times seeing them, geezus, you far outdistance me as a diehard Cure fan! I seriously thought the entire performance was solid but then again since you are a working musician you'd have an inside track on that, so I'll take your word on it. Don't know if I've heard that song 'Forever', must be an early track. Thanks for posting that new song, it's truly great.

  70. bloodtea says Lewd?! Well, this might be the drawing less obscene in months. I don't believe that's possible - I'm aware that legs weren't conceived to fit that way, but hey it was late and it's just a sketch -, and I thought we've been through already with the conversation of not being human, if not _excusez-moi_! Thank you :)

  74. Augusts1 says Have you heard the new Black Francis aka Frank Black? If you look on my page you'll see I did a review prior to this post. It's Pixilicious! The new Radiohead is great as always, as is the new PJ Harvey(although really mellow but gorgeous, a good headphone album), the new Siouxsie is pretty rockin' as well. I could go on & on, lol! So much great music lately.
