I've Got Threshold Apprehension- WHAT?

Posted over 4 years ago
As much as I love New Wave music I'm just not into it today. So, here's what I've been into(among many other things)- the new Frank Black aka Black Francis album came out a month ago & I've been jammin' out like a mutha to it. This song is one of the many favorites on it:And the lyrics: "Talk to the man to get a little work, then you talk to the hand just to get a little jerk." Ahahahahahaha, love that! Black/Frank has always had such a wonderful & hilarious way with a lyric that's for sure. And much of this album really rawks hard. Seems Mr. Francis/Black(whatever the hell he's calling himself these days, heh)is back in fine Pixies or his early solo days form. I really think this was supposed to be Pixies' reunion album. There's quite a few Kim Dealish female backing vocals on it.Apparently this album is dedicated to Herman Brood, a dutch painter & musician of the band His Wild Romance who died in '01. All of the songs have some reference to Brood plus the song "You Can't Break A Heart & Have It" is by Brood. The cover art is also a Brood painting:So cool! And Black Francis is in San Francisco tonight in the middle of a three night stand but since I was just there last weekend & just found out last night that he was performing at Cafe Du Nord, I won't be attending. Damnit!

  2. brendanhalpin says Thanks for putting this stuff up! Frank/Francis/Charles is definitely somebody worth keeping up with. I agree that this sounds like the Pixies album that wasn't--especially "Threshold Apprehension." It's definitely a step away from the more melodic, countryish stuff of "Show Me Your Tears" for example. I wonder if that's why it's a Black Francis album instead of a Frank Black album. I'm wondering if the album took a couple of listens to grow on you--I liked "Threshold Apprehension" a lot for the first couple of minutes, but then I wasn't sure there were five minutes of song there. Having said that, it's a hell of a lot better than "Bam Thwok."

  5. Augusts1 says Brendan, I LOVED this from the first minute of "Captain Pasty", which totally took me by surprise because his previous solo work had been a little too Americana, although I liked it. His stuff w/The Catholics was pretty good though but I really like his early solo stuff. I read on another post that had an interview w/him that he tried to get a Pixies reunion album but it didn't happen due to the other members non interest. But since he was in the headspace he decided to go w/his Pixies era name. No worries w/the dashes in your comment, lol! Thanks for the comments. Kev, glad I could oblige & you're enjoying this. I kinda think there's too much new wave stuff going on w/o a day committed to it, but gotta let the newbies have their fun too!

  8. Betherz247 says Thanks for this! Such great stuff! After listening to the album a few times I think I'm liking this album more than the majority of his previous one, which is saying a lot!

  9. Marigold says I have been meaning to check this out. Thanks a lot for the primer on it. From what I have heard, I see I need to investigate further.

  10. Anna says Tight Black Rubber is something I could get on board with (the song!). Threshold Apprehension not so much, the yelling-struggling thing does not fly well with me. Oh well. You need to post more, uncle A :)

  11. Augusts1 says *Betherz* yvw & glad you are enjoying the album. Black/Frank/Charles got sidetracked w/his Americana cds & this is a great return to his true form. I hope he continues to rock hard like this. *Mike* yes, you do need to check this out further. Not all the songs rock quite like these here but enough of them do to keep it fun. Get thee to I-tunes immediately, lol! *Anna* uh, huh riiiiiight. I know my niece is a kinky little thing. It's ok we all have our kinky areas dear, heh. Personally I love the yelling he does in the song & that's what really helps _make_ the song for me. Why do I need to post more? This is the first time you've commented on one of my posts in quite some time.

  12. Anna says Not commenting on a post doesn't mean I didn't read it or enjoyed it. I comment when I have something to say. When I don't have something to say, again, it doesn't mean that I didn't read or enjoyed a post.

  13. Augusts1 says Well I enjoy comments on my posts just like you do dear. Even if you don't think you have anything to say, even a silly comment is always appreciated.

  14. Anna says Oh, I can do silly (ask QueenofHell, she'll verify it, I'm sure) :) As long as you don't colour me silly in general :) Just know that the wuving is here regardless!

  15. Augusts1 says Oh, trust me, I _*know*_ you can do silly quite well darling! I also know you have a very serious & deep side too, so no worries of being taken silly in general. I wanna be adored just like you, hehe.

  17. Augusts1 says Yup Dar, I love it too! Glad you're enjoying it. I love it cause Black just elicits so much passion in the song it's really cool.

  18. Viva La Britt says Too much...musical goodness...for one post- thank you for these! I think I love that Black still retains a tone of defiance and tension without sounding forced.
    Permalink posted 10/12/2007
  19. Augusts1 says Hey Britt, how are ya? I would agree w/your assessment of Black's tone. I think it just comes from his Pixies roots which I doubt he'll ever lose.

  20. Mike the Knife says Hey, August! Can't believe I missed this one, but there are days that go by when the MOG notices pile up and I try to get to them later, and then, well, sometimes I don't manage. Meanwhile, I got ahold of the album last week and really dug it. Thus, the review I posted. But how the hell did I miss his S.F. engagement? (I was out of town. That's how. Grrrr...)

  21. Augusts1 says Lol, well, you are a busy man, that's how. I wish I'd known earlier that Frank was in SF but then again, I had just been at The Download Fest the Sat. before & I was going to see The Fiery Furnaces the next Friday night(this last one) so, the budget just doesn't allow for EVERYTHING I want to see. Btw, Sun. night a friend & I were in the Mission district & he wanted to walk by a small club he likes to see what music was playing & Chuck Prophet was doing his sound check in the club & I recognised the song he & his band were playing. By then I was running out of money (but I've seen him before in '01 or '02). Just so amazing all the cool music opportunities available in SF regularly as opposed to N. Bay options, ya know?!

  23. Augusts1 says No worries dear Lizzie. I know we all have plenty to occupy us in this thing called life. Glad you discovered this via Mike's post though. And glad you like the songs, the whole album just rocks so hard. It's worth the effort to check it out.
