YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

Blue is a really good color

Posted over 2 years ago
I don't know much about Blues, but a while back, out of nowhere, I had a craving. So I asked some trusted friends for help on where to start. I was given many really good suggestions. But someone recommended Leadbelly's King of the 12 String Guitar. From first listen, I was hooked. Also, if you get a chance, look him up on Wiki...he led a very interesting life. The sound quality is not perfect, but being that it was recorded somewhere around the 1930's...you'll have to overlook it.

  1. dbboucher says The 1930s? Wow, that's impressive. When I went through my blues kick, I ended up mostly in the 60s. What was the recording device of choice in the 1930s anyway? Was that before records?

  2. AnonymousAmy says i think they had records then. i'm not positive, but i think so. it took me a while to get used to the poor sound quality, but over time i learned to appreciate it. what were you listening to from the 60's?

  3. dbboucher says Sorry, I think I misspoke there. I was more checking out soul than blues. Wilson Picket, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, etc... As for blues the only name that comes to mind is John Lee Hooker, but it's also not a genre that I listen to a lot.

  9. madrid spacestation spain says I really like this! Thanks for the suggestion, this is going to be a favorite. John Mayall is my 60s recommendation, and I had a 40s recommendation but I forgot it at the moment

  10. Capt Daydream says Funny... I've recently gotten into blues again. And really old stuff. Got the documentary dvd "Desperate Man Blues" in the mail today, which I look forward to seeing. Some of those 30's tunes in there. Still, Lightning Hopkins was always a favourite of mine. Totally doing his own beat as he saw fit to the words. Did a lot solo on the electric guitar, it seems. Found a great acoustic cd recently, though: "Blues In My Bottle". Found a nice LP a little while back: "Great Songs of Lightning Hopkins". Hope to get started on checking out some Howlin' Wolf very soon now that I'm back on the ol' blues stuff. Recently also been diggin' the 80's-or-so British lo-fi blues stylings of "punk rocker" Wild Billy Childish. Many songs recorded solo in his kitchen. Great feel to them. L
