Australian music

Posted over 3 years ago

As a new addition to the Belgian landscape in West-Flanders, I'm sometimes asked about life and 'culture' in Australia.

For those interested, Australia is a melting pot of cultures of different national/regional cultures, different cuisines (new and old), and different musics.

For those interested in alternative choice in electronic, rock, pop and hip hop, Triple J is the first port of call for an introduction to the world of Australian Music. It is the national radio broadcaster under the umbrella of the Australian Broadcasting Corp. (Attention - reality music shows like Aus. Idol only feature in jokes and pop-bashing moments of the radio's programs and online information.)

Unearthed is one of th best success stories of Triple J. It's website was relaunched in recent years and features hundreds of grass-root bands and groups sharing their music with fans and newbies.

In Melbourne, community radio is fantastic. 3RRR 102.7 and PBS 106.7 both go further than Triple J and really delve into the underground elements of local and international music. All genres are catered for in a broad selection of programs ranging from 1 to 3 hours long.

Next time, I hope to introduce some newer Aussie bands in this mog.
