YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

Once

Posted over 2 years ago
I stumbled into this today:" *"Once":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_%28movie%29* is a 2006 drama film written and directed by John Carney (he is an Irish film and TV director & a former bass guitarist with *"The Frames":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Frames*). It stars Irish musician Glen Hansard, of the popular Irish group The Frames, along with Czech musician Markéta Irglová. Hansard plays a busker (nominally titled Guy) who works in his father's hoover repair shop to earn money. Irglová is a Czech immigrant (nominally titled Girl) who sells flowers on the street. They meet during one of his late night street performances and strike up a friendship based on their shared love for music. The film then follows them as they write and record songs over a week. The movie has been described as a musical for the modern age. Hansard & Irglová had been musical collaborators before the film and released an album entitled The Swell Season in 2006. All the original songs in the movie were written by the two performers.Once won the World Cinema Audience Award for a dramatic film at the 2007 *"Sundance Film Festival":http://festival.sundance.org/2007/* ".*"Official movie site":http://www.foxsearchlight.com/once/*(all bold fonts are links)Trailer:I want to see this. Now now now. Limited release date for USA is May 16th. Go and report back? Please?p.s.1 this post is dedicated to dear *"Lizzie":http://mog.com/Lizziegreeneyes/blog_post/52335#write-comment*, because she is framingly ours, she gave us heads up on the movie & the band and because she is...Lizzie!p.s.2 see how I dusted all of yesterday's camp off my shoulders? :)

  2. Dale says Hmm ... Member of The Frames starring + former member directing + adorable love story = Lizzie sweating profusely. Heh I want to see this too; well, I wanted to, until I noticed the big R on the poster. Why why why? Arg arg arg.

  3. Anna says Me too, Kevin, I feel like a soft peach on the inside. It's rated R? Hm, I wouldn't expect it to be.
    Permalink posted 05/14/2007
  4. Dale says I know; I wouldn't have expected it either, but I have a theory: Indie directors decide that their movie shoudl only be seen by adults, so they toss in just enough skin or swearing to get the R rating, thus ensuring an audience devoid of teenagers. Too bad it cuts me out too. :(

  5. Rawkkiddoh says that means extra love scene for the adult audience. Movies like this make you think, what would you do if you were already in a relationship, and "the one" came along. Loved the part when he asked how do you say Do you love him in Czech, and she responded in Czech, made me smile

  6. Anna says Dale, I can't say I agree. I can't think of why a director would want to leave teenagers out of his movie. Kevin, I'm happy that I solved that one years ago. If someone new comes along and you're interested, something is wrong with your relationship to begin with. You decide if you want/can fix it or start something new.

  7. Anna says (easier said than done, I know)

  8. watchbatteries says Limited release means "not playing here". I just finished watching Everything is Illuminated, though. Eugene Hutz acting.

  9. Dale says _If someone new comes along and you’re interested, something is wrong with your relationship to begin with. You decide if you want/can fix it or start something new._ Couldn't have said it better myself; I don't believe in any of that "one and only" stuff, that there's only one perfect person for you. Relationships are like anything else, you get out of them exactly what you put into them.

  10. iseemonsters says I want to see this so bad. I have their "Swell Season" album and I love it. Luckily I live in L.A. and it will probably at least be shown in an art house theater here. One advantage of life in the big city!

  11. chucky says Sounds worth checking out.

  12. kat3260 says love musicals...the Frames are pretty cool...probably will like this :D awesome! thanks Anna (and Lizzie!)

  13. kristiana says Aaaah, another MUST SEE NOW movie, how frustrating! Looks too good - don't know if I could even watch this right now, lol. And I third what Anna and Dale said about relationships. Although yes - easier said than done sometimes. And the grass is sometimes greener (when ya haven't already been mowing it for a few years), etc etc. :P

  14. Anna says Heath, I haven't seen that yet. Good? I'm sure Once will be released on DVD. Oh Dale, I loathe that ONE concept, it's like we are children or something. Relationships need effort. And there's only one? Kill me now ;) iseemonsters, the official site link I posted has all the cities and screenings. Check it out & have fun! I hadn't seen the myspace page, Mark, thanks! It makes me want to see it more... You're welcome, lady Katrina! "And the grass is sometimes greener (when ya haven’t already been mowing it for a few years)" ahhahahah excuse me while I show this to a friend of mine, he will probably print it on a T-shirt.

  15. kristiana says haha, my best metaphors are the ones that just pop into my head on the spot. And probably the most telling. ;)

  16. Anna says Ain't that the grass mowing truth! :D Ashley, I'm so happy that you were MOGging in the morning today!

  17. Lizziegreeneyes says First ... thank you Anna ... you're a *star* !!! Second ... Dale, say it ain't so ... I'm fairly certain it's not a nudity issue, if anything it's one too many Fbombs ... we hear that and worse in the music we love ... Glen will SURELY miss you :) & I've been sweating for this one since early last year ... so 16th can't come soon enough ... I'll be Philly-bound :) Kev ... I will stake my life on the fact that you will *love* this movie ... ok, maybe not my life, but my personalized CD collection, of which I have easily a few hundred or so ... including *all* my Frames CDs & my Swell Season CD. I've had the good fortune of seeing The Swell Season twice - & the chemistry between these two astoundingly talented artists boggles my mind ... you feel as if you're in on a secret with them that no one else knows - even if you have thousands of adoring fans standing along side you at the Big Tree Stage !!! Anna Kev & Dale ... that's what it's all about ... relationships, takes work, takes love & communication, but if you find yourself being pulled in another direction, that directly represents the present state of your relationship, (at least from what I remember Dale, it's been _sooooo_ long) ;) Chucky - if you have to drive 300 miles to catch this film ... don't ;), but know thata since it got such great Sundance buzz, it will surely be coming to DVD in the next 4-6 months tops ... I also think if all goes well, it will spread out to the smaller hamlets because of how well it does in its limited release ! Kat, Kristiana, isee & watch: I'll refund your money if you aren't totally satisfied by this film ... that's how certain I am that it will speak to most of the MOGGERs & the music junkies not yet in the "know". I can barely stand the wait ... & have it on good authority that it is one of the best films about musicians ever ... Teach - that line breaks my heart like my first love :) Again, Anna - you rock my world darlin !!! GREAT POST !!! (let's get the word out people ... t'will thrill Glen to see such a brilliant response on this side of the pond :) )

  18. kristiana says Liz, I KNOW I will love it. I meant it might be a bit too heart-wrenching and close to home at the moment.

  19. Lizziegreeneyes says that trailer get's me all shivery & teary-eyed, every single time ... love all the quotes from newspapers/magazines ... is it the 16th yet !!! I am in complete agreement with Mike the Knife - The Swell Season's versions of the songs impress me moreso than the Frames versions - & that's not to say the Frames don't play the hell out of them, but the haunt, the ache, the desire, the heartbreak - it's all in Glen & Marketa's versions ... I know what *I'm* going to be listening to the rest of the day ... for those that don't yet have the Swell Season album, here are two of the lesser known tracks & two of my favorites ... let me know what you think !!!! I would like to think that it is blatantly obvious why I *adore* Glen. Tortured Irish singer/songwriter who's voice goes from gentle lullaby & to impassioned rage in the span of 10 seconds :)

  20. Lizziegreeneyes says Kristiana ... I completely understand ... it probably will be hitting a little too close to home for a lot of us ... but I really do think it's going to be one of *the* movies in my life ... *hugs*

  21. Mike the Knife says Saw it a few weeks ago. Loved it. But decided to wait until closer to the U.S. release date to publish the review. Now, Anna has goosed me. (Ooh.) Will post on it later in the week.

  25. bohemianlullaby says discovered the frames from the coachella live feed. this movie looks absolutely lovely. i'll have to find some way to get into the theater. after watching that trailer, i've decided that i need to see this.

  28. max says If i may, I was lucky enough to head over to Sundance this year (which was probably the best thing i've ever done, it was amazing!) and I deffinetely made it out for this one. The whole thing is really great, it's such a quaint and charming film. It's rough around the edges too, but in all the right way! The songs are splendid and the both the acting and the little love affair sub-plot (or perhaps really the bi-plot, if that's a word) are wonderful and cute. I certainly wasn't stunned by the movie, it's not life changing, but deffinetely worth the trip to the theatre and more. You should all go, it'll be good times!

  29. kellywatchthestars says I have Swell Season but had no idea it was a soundtrack to a movie. And by the look of it, a fabulous movie. Thanks so much for this, Anna!

  30. Lizziegreeneyes says Yeah Anna - can we split the EMCD title ;) Let's get the word out ... maybe Hyman could fly you out for the part-ay & we could catch the film :) Then Glen would instantly appear & sing to us wearing nothing but his guitar .... ..... nite guys ;)

  33. lorcan says Going to Dublin soon, really hope it's still showing there... and hope it makes it to France soon too.

  34. Anna says Lizzie...thank _you_, lady, for being framingly ours! "you feel as if you’re in on a secret with them that no one else knows – even if you have thousands of adoring fans standing along side" that is an exquisite concert feeling! I'm 100% with you on relationships....on all accounts ;) "Glen would instantly appear & sing to us wearing nothing but his guitar" so many inappropriate thoughts..must not....elaborate.... Those songs, and Dale's break my heart...not that this is a bad thing. If a heart is not broken, how can it experience healing, right? :) I'm very happy that you enjoyed this post so much! :D Mike! I _knew_ you would have seen this! What is "goose"? Sounds naughty ;) (we'll be waiting on the review...no pressure...) Pamela & Josh, glad you think so :)) LyricalRevolution, I'm psychic like that. MWuahahhaha do it, lady! :) Jameson, that makes me feel so proud :) Lizzie, we did it! Frames mission accomplished ;) You're very welcome, Kelly! Thank you very much for the interesting feedback, Max. What you wrote is pretty much within my expectations. Did you cry? C'mon, fess up. Will _we_ cry (I'm thinking YES) ? And I second the usage of the word "bi-plot", but maybe you should get a second opinion (a bi-opinion, if you will), since I'm Greek and all. You, too, sunscream. You always have such good manners ;) Ray hahahahha I hope none of you guys end up on this guy's list! lorcan, seeing the movie in Dublin will surely be something to remember. Hope it works out for you :) Glad you find it intriguing, Jeff :)

  35. max says haha, well I don't know if there's a whole lot of opportunity for crying ( i know I certainly didn't...sorry :) I can't remember exactly the outcome of the relationship, and I wouldn't want to give anything away. I'll say, yes, there may be an chance for crying...perhaps, haha, i really don't know. Tough I can say I was on the brink of tears for the movie I saw just after, the new John Cusack film "Grace Is Gone".

    Permalink posted 05/15/2007
  37. Lizziegreeneyes says Max: I'm dying to see that one as well & Waitress, but the first two are ONCE & Grace is Gone ... Mr. Cusack, much like Glen, will never do wrong in my eyes ... well John did have that slight mishap with Must Love Dogs ... but they can't all be stellar now can they ??? Anna: I love that I'm _framingly yours_ :) With "yours" being the land o' MOG there's no other place I'd want to rest my weary Frame ;) than on my MOGwall ... or my MOGhatrack ;)

  38. max says yep, i'm a thug! haha @lizzie: Once, Grace Is Gone, Rocket Science, Teeth, and Sweet Mud were my favorites from Sundance. I meant to get to Waitress, but I missed it, I think my dad caught it and loved it though...
    Permalink posted 05/15/2007
  39. Lizziegreeneyes says sweet ... thanks for the info ... I loved the storyline for both Grace is Gone & Once ... I remember reading about Teeth as well ... will check out the others you recommended ! Thanks Max !!!
