Laibach & brand new festival

Posted over 2 years ago
Last night I saw "Laibach":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laibach_%28band%29 live. They are a Slovenian experimental - industrial music group, and the ones that inspired all of "Rammstein's":http://mog.com/Anna/blog_post/44027#write-comment music. "They have been accused for being members of neonationalism movement which reincarnates modern idea of nationalism. Laibach always denied this strongly, pointing out that, as fascism needs a scapegoat, they had become their own scapegoat in the name of satire. Milan Fras, vocalist, is quoted as saying "We are fascists as much as Hitler was a painter" when confronted with such accusations." (erm, weren't Hitler's paintings recently auctioned? I'm just sayin'...)Music: for the first half of the show they performed songs from their album Volk, which is collection of 14 national anthem-inspired songs. I didn't care much for that part of the show, I found it to be childishly political, not to mention that I don't adopt or agree their political beliefs. For the other half of the show they performed normal songs of theirs, in German (??), and I found those to be quite powerful \m/.Crowd: goths goths everywhere and not an eye-liner to erm, drink.Surrealistic touch: we have a carnival going on here now, which is something like your Halloween; costumes, parties & alcohol, but no trick or treating. There was a woman at the show, who wore a white bunny outfit from head to toes; she was the only one in a costume and stood out from a mile's radiance. The group, unaware of the carnival, must have been shocked as hell, to see a white bunny glowing in the black sea of goths. ahahhahhhahNow.....very few people in Greece know this, but a new festival has been organized. It will take place June 12-14 (dates may slightly change) and the line up for one day is: *Killers* & *Manic Street Preachers*. The concert organizers also contacted for this day *Arctic Monkeys*, who were, unfortunately booked (bollocks!), and *Interpol* & *Bloc Party* (waiting to hear from the last two...). If it shapes up to be like that, my head will implode multiple times. I honestly don't stand a chance.

  3. Joxley says Damn..if I didn't have the most important exams of my life that week I'd sooo be booking plane tickets right now... The phrase "childishly political" seems like a bit of an oxymoron, but I reckon "Paulo di Canio":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paolo_Di_Canio (originator of that great phrase "I'm not a rascist, I'm just a fascist") would like them...

  4. Anna says I will totally be in need of an ambulance! Also, I'm so taking credit for the Interpol thing, because I brainwashed my boss's head (who is the one who actually contacted them) about them. Lurve. Aw, Jox, I'd love it if you could come :( Oxymoron, yup, but it was the way to go :)

  5. Neill says Laibach have always made me laugh out loud when I've seen them. Like Rammstein and the Leningrad Cowboys, they are more Cabaret than rock...

  8. Anna says Neill, oh well, dunno about Cabaret but they did seem like colourful characters. ;) B, haha, yup, that seems about right :D Todd, they're mostly industrial (in a way that seperates them from the goth sound). And they were "meh". I wanted an excuse to put on my new red lipstick :)

  9. Takeshi Kovacs says oooo - well i'd be soo bored, i'd be wearing your new red lipstick too, just to shake things up... The festival sounds cool as!

  12. Tony Scalzo says It's nice to see they've found there ??softer?? side by including a female in the line up! Laibach, along with a band from the US called KILLDOZER were among the best cover bands of the 80's. Ever heard LET IT BE? WOW! I think it's important to make fun of Nazi's and knuckleheads and that's just what Laibach offers us.

  13. Anna says Yup, that's right, they have a very specific orientation. Oh the female singer - keyboardist has an amazing voice. And for the second part of the show they brought up two girls, dressed in hot black outfits, who provided backing vocals & hit one drum each, in synchronized, choreographed movements :)

  14. Zeroskilz says Good luck on Interpol and Bloc Party! That's really too bad about the Arctic Monkeys though. I love the image of the white rabbit in a sea of goths.

  21. etcvisitor says “We are fascists as much as Hitler was a painter” so, they are fascists but were never successful at it so they persued art (in the form of music). YES I THINK WE HAVE SOLVED THE PUZZLE!!!

  22. SatisfiedMind614 says "If we can shot rabbits, why can't we shoo fascists" That is my favorite Manic Street Preachers line...although its late, and I probably misquoted it
