WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

1. Underworld

Posted over 3 years ago
I found some old mini discs of mine today, which took me by the hand & led me all the way down my musical memory lane. I was moved by what I found. So, I decided that I will start these back in time posts, in an attempt to exorcise & embrace my "demons" and, hopefully, introduce you to something that will move you, too.1. *Underworld*No other electronic band ever managed to come so close to me. And by "close to me", I mean "straight to my core". "Wiki will do the talkin'":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underworld_%28band%29 & I will do the worshippin':Two Months Off...makes me want to dance & kiss at the same time"you bring light in..."Dinosaur Adventure 3D...makes me want to dance & cry at the same time"she move fast, she look downshe won't look in my eyesI remember her now...her unnatural surprise"

  1. CrashPryor says ...you oughta check out Byron Stingily's "The Purist" LP...it's Chicago style but dude rocks the spot a la Sylvester back in the day...it's a pretty tight set, yo...

  2. Dale says Hadn't seen that second video before; liked that song a lot. I remember seeing the video for "Push Upstairs" and not being very impressed. Perhaps I was a bit too quick to judge harshly, after the glory that is "Pearl's Girl" and "Born Slippy". I might have to give this album a closer inspection. Thanks.

  4. Anna says Chris, thanks for the heads up. "I'm intrigued":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byron_Stingily :) You are welcome, Dale. A Hundred Days Off is my fav (as you already know) Underworld album. These songs both crush me in such different, but equally powerful ways. Michael, it's there; it always is :)

  8. ebuzzmiller says ahh, but what did you think of them when they were called Freur????
    Permalink posted 12/26/2006
  9. ebuzzmiller says Or have you heard their first album "Underneath The Radar", Anna? I actually worked this record at Warners when it came out, met the guys - sure didn't think they'd end up the way they did, if you look at their whole career, they've done a wide variety of pretty interesting stuff...

  14. triff says their fist two albums do it best for me, listening to Second Toughest always sends me floating off up hills and down country lanes around the west mids, mid-late 90's, early hours of the morning, plumes of pungent smoke flowing out the back of my brother's car etc... :) Dubnobass came a bit later (yeah, i'm backwards) but i listen to it much more these days. if you haven't got it i can't recommend 'Everything, Everything' enough, Underworld live at their best, in 5.1 and with two video tracks so you can watch the main visuals/live footage mix or just the (f'kn ace) pure Tomato visuals, depending what yer smoking at the time.

  15. Zeroskilz says I love the Everything, Everything video. Unfortunately, it's my only real exposure to the band. Since it's on DVD, I don't take the time to watch it that much. But Rex/Cowgirl comes up on Launch every now and then and always gets cranked.

  16. Nixne Svix says was more of a bar band kind of kid, but i did see a few shows like these. i think(i know thats bad) i saw Underworld at one of those Raves/Rock shows(Orlando) or Gainesville Florida. I do remeber seeing the Chemical Brothers live in Miami, and I will tell you what.....it was one of the most powerful -tribal-beautiful moment I have had with 30,000+ . very very very good. i have never seen a crowd so in touch with a group. if thats what these shows mean to you all Neill , Anna , Chris and Dale: I am jealous. Hey Chris , any stories about "Simon's Club" in Gainesville? Simons was the place for Underground shows like this in the 90's, I still see Simon around town, no more shows, just clubbin now a days....

No...and you worked on this? I need more info. triffski, Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest in the Infants, A Hundred Days Off are all brilliant. Seriously, brilliant. It's just that I connect to A Hundred Days Off more. I want that DVD!

  18. Anna says Oh, triffs, Tomato, mmm... Cameron, I've seen Chemical Brothers & Orbital; both fantastic, mind-blowin' shows. (I'm not commenting on the "I think I saw Undeworld" part..:P)

  19. triff says Never really got into A Hundred Days Off, kinda felt like more of the same, I'll need to re-visit. Didn't listen that much to Beaucoup Fish either after the first few months either now i think about it... But the first two just are a very distinct time in my life, that seems to be something they're really good at, i think maybe because of the prominence of the visual aspects of their work. Oh, nearly forgot to mention i saw them live at least 3 times. All at Glastonbury... :p
    Permalink posted 12/26/2006
  20. Anna says Beaucoup Fish is the only Underworld album I don't refer to as "brilliant, genius, fantastic". ...................................................... Yeah, now bend ovah for your e-spankin'. :P

I did see Orbital at a Lollapalooza, i forgot until you reminded me , which reminded me in turn that I saw The Orb also once. wow i gotta cut back on the Freon and Aluminum Freezes....that shits a killer to the memory!

  24. Rawkkiddoh says Late again in posting, but Underworld is so good. They had their music in an incredible movie, Trainspotting, and thats were I first heard of them. I feel I don't own enough of their music, but there is always time.

  27. triff says oh gawd... ebuzzmiller, Underneath the Radar... i downloaded that for novelty's sake ages back and... ugh... that was pre-Emerson i think. pre something. pre-puberty? they definitely needed a kick of some description. it's like some bastard septic child of Erasure and Pet Shop Boys that's gone wrong in it's mind-tank. Is Freur worth looking for?

  29. k8girl says Dear God those songs bring back memories. As a really young girl I used to run around Orlando and Gainesville, dating DJs and worshipping groups such as Underworld. I can remember dancing my bootie off screaming "you bring light in" over and over to the record spinning. I did get the chance to hear Darren Emmerson spin, but never the live act with all the guys :( Nixne: Simon's was insane! My little sister goes to school at UF and its just so different. I haven't been up there in years. Simon's is long gone right? I last was there in 2002 to hear Danny Howells and Pako and Frederick. But I really had fun in the 90's. Digweed's Halloween sets were always wild :)

I am also about 4 hours from Miami and the "WMC":http://www.wintermusicconference.com/hlights.htm. This past year I finally threw in the towel and stayed home.

  35. ebuzzmiller says OK Dogg, sorry it took me so long to reply to your mogmail - it's the holidays you know!!!! I worked at Warners from 1987-1989 as a local artist development rep in New York - had a lot of cool projects, Guns & Roses, Echo & The Bunnymen, Depeche, Siouxsie, The Replacements, XTC, basically nothing but totally amazing stuff really. in 1988 (I think) we got assigned Underworld as a project - I had to call record stores, send out posters, cassettes & LPs, get in store play, bring retailers and key "tastemakers" to shows - basically every 21 year old music junkies dream job. I was really excited about working Underworld because they seemed kind of different. I had never heard Freur at the time, circled back to them later, fun stuff too. So Underworld did a showcase at RCA Studios in NYC where they played basically the whole record for invited guests, probably 100 people from radio, press and retail, plus us label squids. They were really tight, Hyde kind of overacted, he was a bit too "expressive" back then, but they rocked. It was geeky 80's stuff, but fun. Irronically, their drummer back then was a guy named Bryn Burrows, who played drums in a late 70's band called "The Fabulous Poodles", who I LOVED, they were one of the first bands who I ever bought a full length record by...so I ended up talking to Underworld's drummer for an hour about his old band. Never really chatted too long with Karl :-( Anyway, the best track by the Fabulous Poodles is their "hit" American single "Mirror Star".....another bit of irony, the Who's John Entwistle produced their first record and played bass on a few tracks - so Underworld is only one step removed from The Who!

  36. ebuzzmiller says and sorry Triff, but yeah, Freur is worth looking for, if you like 80's pop/electronic bands.....

  37. Anna says I hope you had a good time during the holidays :) Thanks so much for the interesting info!! You know, you're so lucky that you introduced me to Colder, 'cause your job description is just.........

  38. ebuzzmiller says I thought it was a pretty good job description....figure out local marketing plans for new "alternative" artists...it was pretty effective. Just getting someone to play a record in their store (if the store was a good one) could get a little spark started...there were tons of great bands playing at all these little venues in NYC, and MTV hadn't even started to totally suck yet. Grassroots marketing has broken a lot of bands, the major labels don't really do it anymore, which is a large part of the reason why nothing too risky comes out on the majors anymore - they don't want to take the time to get someone to BELIEVE in a band, convert them, with a cassette, tickets, a poster, a 12 inch. You ended up getting close to some of the bands and really caring what happened to them, and it was great to do that and get paid for it - all my money went to music so thank God I got the job otherwise I would have been broke!

  39. triff says nice job there buzz - well, i mean the post and the actual job. :) i'll check out Freur, it's always good to see how important bands like Underworld ended up where they are. Which reminds me... I listened to E2-E4 by Manuel Göttsching after reading another MOG by Thierry Castaing - blatantly a huge influence to Underworld's early sound, especially Dubnobass... era. Well, that part of the sound anyway... ;)
