Please don't hate me

Posted over 3 years ago

But I don't like the new Killers song at all.

First of all, I find the lyrics to be ridiculously childish, at best.

Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord

Are we human or are we denser
(some hear "dancer" but that only makes it worse in my head)?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we denser?

I actually laughed the first time I heard them. And Flowers utters them in a serious, melodramatic tone, while sporting a blazer with animal feathers on the shoulders part. C'mon....

Second of all, the slowly building up beat spine of the song. What on earth? All the stupid dance hits that the radio stations try to feed us (especially during summer time), have the exact same sonic structure. Arg!

Again, don't hate me, just my humble opinion, and, needless to say, I mean no offense to the people who like it.

runs away and hides

PS Song has been posted before, of course, I just re-posted it for the sake of discussion, and for those who may not have heard it till now.

its funny because as I read this I was hearing a song with repeating lyrics, "Its all in your mind".. and you know it is.. the song lyrics are just plain stupid, but it transcends that to me and unlke the new Coldplay songs, which I dont' think much of either, this one does just feel like gloss and hollywood and empty, I always feel better when I hear it and for some reason it goes beyond the words to a more philosophical question for me.. and I opted always to the "dancer" in my mind and somehow I feel a bit lighter.. like there's ths decision I make that puts me in a place more than the human condition.. so I guess it is poetic to me as well. Good Post, how could I ever hate you..  !!

Ya know, I'm a big Killers fan too, but how can you like that dribble. Its part of the problem when a band gets a major label deal, they are under contract. If you weren't gonna get paid unless you produce some music.  An F for effort for that single. Normally the lyrics are pretty good.

Aww Indiana, I'm glad you don't hate me. Sorry I can't see your second comment mwuahhaha! Could say "dancer", but it makes no difference to me. I'm glad it makes you feel good. That's what music is all about (or to make us feel depressed hehe).

Glad you agree, Glen. I'm hoping that the rest of the album will be better. If it's like this, I think they should stay away from the studio for a while.

Nah Anna, I don't hate you, actually I wrote the same thing yesterday somewhere. It's just not much special at all, and indeed, that melodramatic tone for really no good reason. I rather have something as sharp and manic as Mr Brightside. This really doesn't cut it. I heard another song from the new album, 'Superman', which I liked a bit better. This one is pretty boring in my opinion. Especially, fior example, when you listen to the also synth driven songs of Of Montreal.

They played two songs on Saturday Night Live a couple weeks ago. "Human" failed to impress me, but "Spaceman" wasn't too bad. I think they may have gotten overambitious on Sam's Town and are trying to find a balance with that record and Hot Fuss. The use of Joy Division B-side as an intermittent single was a bad idea. Mostly because some of their less knowledgeable fans didn't know 1)what a b-sides collection was and 2)who Joy Division were. Sigh.

Cheers, Stefan! Doesn't cut it at all, indeed. I am very disappointed. Shallow lyrics and a weak same old dance spine are pretty bad things in my opinion. Haven't heard any other songs from the album, but I'm a bit scared now...

I agree with you that from Hot Fuss to Sam's Town they went a bit more self-indulgent.  That was fine with me, I still liked it.

But now, if this song Human is to set the style and standard of what their next album is to be, oh dear... I fear they may have moved on from self-indulgent to pretentious.

    I sure hope not.

I thought he was saying 'dancers' too. Either way, I would have to agree that the lyrics are sub-par at best. The My sign is vital, my hands are cold line makes me think of Mr.Roboto's My heart is human, my blood is boiling line. Don't quite know why.

Tyler, I agree, it was overproduced. Hot Fuss was brilliant, but something went wrong after that. I like them, but I am getting the impression that what happend is that they disappeared up their own arses, and this unfortunate event reflected on their music :(

Kevin, I don't hear the final "s", and "or are we dancer" is not proper English, but even if it is dancers, that doesn't really improve the meaning, I'm afraid :/

Dale, problem is, that when he finds them, he uses them too much....no self-control whatsoever, that boy. ;)

One more meh it is, van :)

Charley, of course, this is just my opinion of the single. Although if you call me "Darth", I will probably respond.....

Daniel, could be so. Unfortunately, it doesn't help anyway.

I actually really like it. It's a turn back towards 'Hot Fuss'. And personally, I don't pay that much attention to lyrics. As far as I'm concerned they act, along w/the vocals, more as an added instrument. And I thought he was singing 'dancer' as well.

Now that Joy Division cover they did, I didn't much care for even though I love JD & thought it was SUPER pretentious.

^ Their Shadowplay cover sucked hardcore.

And no hate here Anna, just 100% agreement.  It lacks the passion and sense of fun from Hot Fuss.  Sam's Town was just a complete let down...i'm all for going in new directions but not when it makes an already good band sound like a bunch of rip-offs.  I have a feeling I'll still buy Day & Age when it comes out though.  But it it's bad, that's it for Jules and The KIllers.

Some bands can get away with laughably bad lyrics.  The Killers are not one of them.

Most people seem to hear "dancer", but that's not proper English. Shouldn't it be "or are we dancers?"?

Julia, you are a lass after my own heart. We feel the same way about Hot Fuss and what followed. I really love 3 songs from Sam's Town, but if you remember a post I did some time ago, I was pretty much disappointed with their new 'direction'. They'll get one more chance for sure, but just the one...

Agreed. They take themselves way too seriously for them to get away with it.

Mike, you are a man of fine taste. Except for your vocals sensitivity ;)

And no we don't hate you. I wouldn't dislike or hate anyone because of their musical tastes. I have many friends who don't appreciate the music of Springsteen or The Beatles. I know it's weird but that's them.

We all have things we love and dislike that's what make us who we are.

It's okay not to like a song or a group that's popular. I know that I'm no fan of a lot of music that's new and hip now.

That being said, The Killers cover of Shadowplay is horrible, thank you for being the one to say it Jules. It's an insult to the legacy of Ian Curtis and Joy Divison.
