Please don't hate me

But I don't like the new Killers song at all.
First of all, I find the lyrics to be ridiculously childish, at best.
Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord
Are we human or are we denser (some hear "dancer" but that only makes it worse in my head)?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we denser?
I actually laughed the first time I heard them. And Flowers utters them in a serious, melodramatic tone, while sporting a blazer with animal feathers on the shoulders part. C'mon....
Second of all, the slowly building up beat spine of the song. What on earth? All the stupid dance hits that the radio stations try to feed us (especially during summer time), have the exact same sonic structure. Arg!
Again, don't hate me, just my humble opinion, and, needless to say, I mean no offense to the people who like it.
runs away and hides
PS Song has been posted before, of course, I just re-posted it for the sake of discussion, and for those who may not have heard it till now.

Let me add that I am actually a Killers fan. That's what generated the post. If I didn't care, well, I wouldn't care.
its funny because as I read this I was hearing a song with repeating lyrics, "Its all in your mind".. and you know it is.. the song lyrics are just plain stupid, but it transcends that to me and unlke the new Coldplay songs, which I dont' think much of either, this one does just feel like gloss and hollywood and empty, I always feel better when I hear it and for some reason it goes beyond the words to a more philosophical question for me.. and I opted always to the "dancer" in my mind and somehow I feel a bit lighter.. like there's ths decision I make that puts me in a place more than the human condition.. so I guess it is poetic to me as well. Good Post, how could I ever hate you.. !!
DOES NOT, I meant DOES not just feel..
Ya know, I'm a big Killers fan too, but how can you like that dribble. Its part of the problem when a band gets a major label deal, they are under contract. If you weren't gonna get paid unless you produce some music. An F for effort for that single. Normally the lyrics are pretty good.
Aww Indiana, I'm glad you don't hate me. Sorry I can't see your second comment mwuahhaha! Could say "dancer", but it makes no difference to me. I'm glad it makes you feel good. That's what music is all about (or to make us feel depressed hehe).
Glad you agree, Glen. I'm hoping that the rest of the album will be better. If it's like this, I think they should stay away from the studio for a while.
bottomline to some songs are about the lyrics this one obviously isn't
I know, but the way the song is constructed, it feels like they are trying to emphasize them. Not to mention that the music irritates me as well :/
Oh man Indiana, I love that avatar. That is great. I should hope the album does them more justice.
Well I have to admit... I have been a little reluctant to bag... but the song does nothing for me at all...hype hype hype.. seems to be what makes their world go around... I will take a leaf Anna and just say it from here... OMg... are you ready??? lol
Glen, they have a good cover artwork btw. Look around for it, if you haven't seen it.
Hype is a 3 letter word, really, Zen Raven!
Take a leaf, take an animal feather, do your thing ;)
This avator, recently famous, as he was mentioned over 20 x in the Presidential debate this week, what crock of... oh well, so he's my hero now, I vote for Mr. Plummer as the new president of these United States!!! LOL
you can have the jacket feathers and all, but at least its clearer now to me why he wore it from this video on SNL...
What video is that?
that one there.. the one you like :0)
Has he still got the 'tache? I liked that 'tache.
Brandon Flowers - lead singer of The Killers
Nah Anna, I don't hate you, actually I wrote the same thing yesterday somewhere. It's just not much special at all, and indeed, that melodramatic tone for really no good reason. I rather have something as sharp and manic as Mr Brightside. This really doesn't cut it. I heard another song from the new album, 'Superman', which I liked a bit better. This one is pretty boring in my opinion. Especially, fior example, when you listen to the also synth driven songs of Of Montreal.
They played two songs on Saturday Night Live a couple weeks ago. "Human" failed to impress me, but "Spaceman" wasn't too bad. I think they may have gotten overambitious on Sam's Town and are trying to find a balance with that record and Hot Fuss. The use of Joy Division B-side as an intermittent single was a bad idea. Mostly because some of their less knowledgeable fans didn't know 1)what a b-sides collection was and 2)who Joy Division were. Sigh.
Indiana, I searched the Killer's artist lounge and saw your relevant post now. Unfortunately, the video is no longer available.
Fluxy hahaha unfortunately, he stashed the 'tache :)
Cheers, Stefan! Doesn't cut it at all, indeed. I am very disappointed. Shallow lyrics and a weak same old dance spine are pretty bad things in my opinion. Haven't heard any other songs from the album, but I'm a bit scared now...
Heya Heath! Long time no e-see.
Not sure what their problem is exactly, but there's definitely one, I'm afraid. I should look around for Spaceman.
E-see? Never heard that one before. I've kind of cooled off on the Killers since Hot Fuss, but maybe they can be solid with the new one.
After Hot Fuss, they moved into a different direction, a more sonically self-indulgent one, if you will. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sigh.
Anna, I don't hate you, but you may hate me after this comment.
I agree with you that from Hot Fuss to Sam's Town they went a bit more self-indulgent. That was fine with me, I still liked it.
But now, if this song Human is to set the style and standard of what their next album is to be, oh dear... I fear they may have moved on from self-indulgent to pretentious.
I sure hope not.
Not hating you at all, Jo! Actually, I couldn't agree with you more. We share the same fear. We can even say that they had a healthy amount of pretentiousness is Sam's Town, but this is too much, ECK!
Ever since they dropped the auto tuner on his voice with the last album, I've been less than impressed with this band. I thought the first album was quite a great pop record, but subsequent tracks had me saying "meh..." I think too much studio wizardry made me a skeptic.
I liked it, but feel rather stupid right now. I thought they were saying, "Are we human or are we dancers"
Not hating, just ... meh.
At least Brandon found his synthesizers again. So he's got that going for him, which is nice. ;)
I'm with Dale - meh pretty much sums it up...
i'm not jumping over to your dark side until i hear the whole album.
I thought he was saying 'dancers' too. Either way, I would have to agree that the lyrics are sub-par at best. The My sign is vital, my hands are cold line makes me think of Mr.Roboto's My heart is human, my blood is boiling line. Don't quite know why.
Tyler, I agree, it was overproduced. Hot Fuss was brilliant, but something went wrong after that. I like them, but I am getting the impression that what happend is that they disappeared up their own arses, and this unfortunate event reflected on their music :(
Kevin, I don't hear the final "s", and "or are we dancer" is not proper English, but even if it is dancers, that doesn't really improve the meaning, I'm afraid :/
Dale, problem is, that when he finds them, he uses them too much....no self-control whatsoever, that boy. ;)
One more meh it is, van :)
Charley, of course, this is just my opinion of the single. Although if you call me "Darth", I will probably respond.....
Daniel, could be so. Unfortunately, it doesn't help anyway.
I felt insulted, as a bot, by the lyrics, I have to admit :)
Sorry very much, oh Mrs. Roboto. Or is it Mrs. Turner now? ;)
Yours are fine, it's Flowers' lyrics that are hurtful haha
The latter, if you don't mind ;)
Simply Put....It Sucks
I actually really like it. It's a turn back towards 'Hot Fuss'. And personally, I don't pay that much attention to lyrics. As far as I'm concerned they act, along w/the vocals, more as an added instrument. And I thought he was singing 'dancer' as well.
Now that Joy Division cover they did, I didn't much care for even though I love JD & thought it was SUPER pretentious.
^ Their Shadowplay cover sucked hardcore.
And no hate here Anna, just 100% agreement. It lacks the passion and sense of fun from Hot Fuss. Sam's Town was just a complete let down...i'm all for going in new directions but not when it makes an already good band sound like a bunch of rip-offs. I have a feeling I'll still buy Day & Age when it comes out though. But it it's bad, that's it for Jules and The KIllers.
Some bands can get away with laughably bad lyrics. The Killers are not one of them.
yep. not good. so you're safe. i still like ya. :)
ya im not diggin it that much. but it does get stuck in my head every once and a while since i hear it on the radio every hour at work. someone asked me yesterday if i were human, or if i were a 'dancer'
i just said i was a little bit of both...
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we denser?
shivers! i can't take it...
Anna, this is ever the scariest post you've made all October. ;d
No "Boo!" here, Anna. The first album is still the one that kills. Pretensioso since then? Si! But of course, your mileage (and that's the plural "you," fellow MOGsters) can and often does vary...
Mark ahaha rubbish, utter rubbish ;)
Uncle A, I know you like it, I'm glad you didn't take offense :*
Most people seem to hear "dancer", but that's not proper English. Shouldn't it be "or are we dancers?"?
Julia, you are a lass after my own heart. We feel the same way about Hot Fuss and what followed. I really love 3 songs from Sam's Town, but if you remember a post I did some time ago, I was pretty much disappointed with their new 'direction'. They'll get one more chance for sure, but just the one...
Agreed. They take themselves way too seriously for them to get away with it.
Mike, you are a man of fine taste. Except for your vocals sensitivity ;)
Sam, I'm sure it works as an earworm, if given the chance.
You should have also told him that that is NOT correct English! Said the Greek.
poe hahahahaha BOO! I don't know how I can top this ;)
Mikey, I miss that first sonical killing, sigh (singing Somebody Told Me inside my head). I don't mind a little pretentiousness (it would be pretentious of me otherwise hehe), but even I have my limits, feathers or not :)
I with you Anna;
First Album 8/10
2nd Album 3/10
3rd Album Where's my shovel?
Ok, I hate you (and have changed my avatar to match). And now you'll hate me back. I like this. I think it has a great melody. Oh, the lyrics are kinda silly, but I don't need great lyrics to like a song. And there's a bit too much synthesizer on the track for my taste. Let me also aay that I'm not a Killers fan, so it's hard to disappoint me. Would I buy it? No. But if I got it for free on a magazine sampler, I'd probably keep it.
I won't hate you if you don't hate me, cause I like it. ;)
And just to make Rawkkiddoh feel better, it is dancer. Says so on their website. And I do agree, that doesn't make any sense either.
Good God, what be this mess?!?!!? After channeling Joy Division it's like they're channelling New Order, only it's the boring period after they ran out of ideas. This track is truly awful - I managed about 1/4 of it. So unlike the storming performance they put on at Reading this year.
Neill hahahhaha I'd give a 6 to the second album, but I'll get my shovel ready for the third one ;)
Mark, I do appreciate the avatar...but great melody? Are you mad! j/k haha I'm afraid that it sucks on all levels for me. If I got it for free on a magazine sampler, I'd probably use it for a coaster, or for a dog-chew toy :)
Of course not, Mimi! ;)
I know, it's kinda worse actually hahaha
Jonh...I don't know what's wrong...is it the big bad label? Is it the feathers on his blazer? Is it that they need nicking guidance? If they continue like this, I soon won't really care about the answer.
Of all the possibilities, I'd say they need nicking guidance. Shall we mail Brandon your phone number?
I wouldn't even know where to begin...
We don't hate you. I think it's a good catchy pop song. It's not the single of the year or a classic at all.
And no we don't hate you. I wouldn't dislike or hate anyone because of their musical tastes. I have many friends who don't appreciate the music of Springsteen or The Beatles. I know it's weird but that's them.
We all have things we love and dislike that's what make us who we are.
It's okay not to like a song or a group that's popular. I know that I'm no fan of a lot of music that's new and hip now.
That being said, The Killers cover of Shadowplay is horrible, thank you for being the one to say it Jules. It's an insult to the legacy of Ian Curtis and Joy Divison.
I wasn't one who got on The Killers bandwagon when their first album came out. I still believe their overrated. But, I do like this song.
ANNA! I don't like it either. you brave soul. i think discourse is v important!
i'm not a killers fan in the least, but i don't hate you because you are.
its all part of life's rich pageant (and even though i say that, not much of an REM fan either....)
myeverpresentpast, I'm glad to hear that you're an open-minded person. I have friends that don't know what (yes, 'what') Joy Division are, sigh, so I'm quite well-trained myself.
When I first heard their cover of Shadowplay, I kinda fancied it. After a while and up to these days, I call it an 'abomination'.
My liking of them is going downhill, just like the bad itself imho, I'm afraid. I do agree that they're overrated and their own personal demeanor doesn't help...
Hey Karen, one more on board! We will soon rule the world :)
It is, I agree, you just never know if you might step on someone's toes.
That's good to know, anna! I've always been so and so on REM myself.
I'm very pleased that MOGgers are calm and open-minded. I once even got away with an I-don't-like-Death-Cab-For-Cutie post. Yup, true story! ;)
whoo whoo Anna re: the Death Cab for Cutie post.... as a Beatles trivialist... I actually have avoided them based solely on their name... as I tell people, "They might be the greatest band ever... but I can't get past the naming one's band after a chorus of an obscure song sung by the Beatles on Magical Mystery Tour." HA!
