WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Glasvegas live, September 15th, at The Cockpit, Leeds.

Posted 9 months ago

~ Music: see red buttons in post and comment areas.

~ City: Leeds. I am not a tourist.

~ Venue: The Cockpit (http://www.thecockpit.co.uk/). I promise to haunt it for as long as I'm here, whether it's for shows, or usual good music nights. The stage room is of 400 capacity, and it was sold out.

~ The crowd: UK, indie band, indie venue, you do the indie math ;P

~ The band:

To characterize where this band is now, one could use their own lyrics here we, here we, here we fucking go. They are about to go, about to explode. And for the first time in my life I have the chance to say "yeah, I saw them in an intimate venue before they became big" har har. By "big" I don't mean Arctic Monkeys big, they're not as accessible. They're depressing, blackened, with that shoe-gazing touch that doesn't appeal to everyone (only those with good taste in music har har!).

So and so news...

The fact that the band is about to go big has a visible effect on them, or to be more accurate, on their singer. You can see him striking poses, body language doing much talking, never taking his Rayban wayfarers off. It's not to the level of overshadowing the music or affecting his wonderful, tortured (oh hush) tone of voice, but it's there, and I really hope that it won't get enlarged.

The other piece of bad news was the length of their set, which lasted 45 minutes. We want more, we want more! Heh

Very good news...

If you have ever lost a parent, I can't see how Daddy's Gone won't appeal to you. If you ever lost a loved one because of your own fucked up mind, I don't see how It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry won't make the hair in the back of your neck stand up. If you have ever been through any life toughness, I don't see how this band's melon collie lyricism won't have an effect on you. All this comes to you in big doses in the live performance of their material. I got the chills more times than I could count. Waves of twirling guitars, brilliant song dynamics, melody fuzziness, and great atmospherics one after the other (no, I didn't cry; but I came close, I'll admit that). What's more, the songs were orchestrated in a way that gets the audience involved. And we did. Oh yes, we did.

Once again, this was Anna, reporting to you live and amateurishly from the sweaty first row.

~ Conclusion:

After seeing them live, my faith in Glasvegas' music is now even more solid.

~ Lyrics:

So this is the grand finale, the crescendo of demise

this is the happy ending where the bad guy goes down and dies

this is the end with me on my knees and wondering why?

cross my heart, hope to die

it's my own cheating heart that makes me cry

{It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry}

~ Trophy:

~ Pictorial souvenirs:

I kept this last picture despite its flaws (Glasvegas members right and left of the blinding stage lights), because to me it represents the danger the band could be in, letting their own dark glow blind them. Promise me that it won't, Glaswegians! :)

PS Many thanks to Julia (http://mog.com/Jules09), who introduced me to them back in December.

It's quite pleasant, I have to say! I'm also going to see THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS. CAN'T WAIT! Excitement...

I like it ALot, too, and it's probably going to have a place in my top 10 of the year...

That's why I come here - to get the scoop on music I don't know about.  I like what I hear.  I'm just bummed there's nothing available in the state, except for a lousy single (the fact that it's a single makes it lousey) Thank you Anna.  The UK is right where you need to be.

"Daddy's Gone" is a heartbreaker, for sure. Just listening to the track again gives me shivers. Love this band, profanity aside. So cool that you got to see them in such an intimite venue.

Last Shadow Puppets next? I thought I heard some squeals of excitement from here. Do try to leave Alex in one piece when you're done, won't you? ;)

That's good to hear, Eric (see that, Kev? You're the only one coming here for sweaty images LOL! :P). I ordered my Glasvegas album from Amazon UK, if that helps. You're very welcome. I'll try to keep the musical crack coming :)

Dale, I hear that...when I first got my paws on that song, it was on repeat for Kapranos knows how many times.

Hmmm....that could be tricky. How about I promise to leave Kane {meh} in one piece instead? ;P

Well, Anna, you seem to have landed with both feet firmly planted in the front of the stage!  Bravo!  I knew you'd do fine.

LOVE the music and the pictures!  Love you, actually.  :)

I'm jealous Anna.  these guys are only doing dates on the east coast when they're in the US on this trip.  it's tempting to make a run to NY (i'm in LA at the moment), but it's even more tempting to call my friends the Blue Nile in Glasgow and tell them i'm gonna make a visit.  i love that music scene and I love this band.

the good news is that i'm on my way to see MGMT at the KCRW studios.  if you're online you can watch it stream on http://www.kcrw.com.  they'll hit live at 11:20am LA time.

New bands in the UK on their first headlining tours usually only play 45mins because they haven't got any more tunes! The first time I saw JAMC at the Electric Ballroom they played for 16mins!!!

Really pleased you got in on a classic, sweaty UK gig when you know you are getting a band that is about to break BIG!!!

Robin, go to Scotland! I'd love to go there....have a pint on me :)

Speaking of next big things...MGMT! hehe

Cheers for the link, I'll try to exploit it :)

Neill, I suspected that...they could have played me favourite songs twice though ;)

Aw thanks! I've been reading about these gigs...never had the pleasure to experience one before, I was starting to think that they're urban legends....nope!

You are such an indie CD guru!

Good to hear you've already dived into the England indie world! Hope many more gigs are to come. ;)

With that said, I really don't understand the hype for this band at all. Trully cannot see it. The album was below average in my opinion. The lyrics are as well. Perhaps apart from Daddy Gone, the lyrics really aren't that good at all. I hate to see the hype they get because I honestly feel other bands are making better music but simply are getting none of the press.

I like what I hear - and enjoyed your front row report. That blinding stagelight picture is fantastic. So nice you got to catch these guys early. It seems inevitable that they will go through a "swelled head" period if fame strikes, but hopefully it will be short period.

Imagine that they sing in Italian.  They sure sound like the pop-rock that was popular in Italy in the '90s.

No, thank you Anna!  I'm thoroughly jealous that you got to see them live, it sounds amazing.  Plus the set list!  I may be willing to fork out $30 for the imported CD if it doesn't become available in the US soon...this review has convinced me though.

Nice trophy - but look at the size of that type! Is that because with his shades on he can't read it if it's smaller?

    Tourist - Leeds.....That's an oxymoron!

Welcome to our lovely country, Anna. Look forward to seeing you in London.

Thank you, uncle A! Almost lost my plane from London to Manchester (so shameful to hear someone call your name from airport speakers!), but I made it after all :)

Cheers, Stefan, dived head in first :)

Don't believe the hype, yo ;)

What can I say, I liked them from the first note. I have a soft spot for their music and their lyrics. As far as the latter goes, I find them to be soul-scratching sincere, and I really appreciate that. Each band to their own poetry :)

Lady Miss Ian, I'm really glad to hear that. Thank you! I often say that it's the faulty ones that are worth it the most :)

Yeah, I guess it's natural. I think that it will pass when he leaves the Raybans aside hehe his under their spell!

Why yes, and a marginalized pariah at that ;)

incurablyerin, glad you do! I love your description, very apt! :)

Rejean, my knowledge of such music is limited, but I'd love to know more...

Julia, here's to you, lady! You are my musical cupid in this case. There is also a limited (by marketing terms, of course) edition with an extra DVD with lots of goodies, keep your eyes open for it :)

Jonh, we are living in the era of "the wayfarers made me do it!", so that could easily be true....

I am know to be an oxy-moron myself ;)

Thank you very much, sir. Next round is on me!

Anna, oh my, this is an excellent post. although i caught it a little late, i am still feeling the vibe of someone who made a radical shift (geographically and otherwise) all over the way you've written it - plus, the "language" of those photos. i am so thrilled for you, honestly.

depressing, blackened, tortured, about to explode ... wait, were we talking about the man you're/i'm looking for? (+ so inspired, Anna, so inspired.

Sorry for the late reply, poe.

Thank you, it's really great to be here and experience situations I only dreamt about. Sometimes I can't believe it myself. My last 3 years in Greece were very hard, for family reasons, and I feel like I'm flying now.

Hehe he would be the perfect imperfect man for sure! :)

You can't put more than one song in a post. You can, however, have more songs in comments, do you know how to do that?
