... I do like female vocals.
For instance, my latest band crush is on The Pierces (thank you, Joxy), a New York based music band. The principal members are sisters Catherine Pierce and Allison Pierce, who originally hail from Birmingham, Alabama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pierces). I love Catherine Pierce's vocals...that would be the blonde one...ain't it always ;)
Exhibit #1
They are indie witches, these two.
From their official biography:
Allison and Catherine Pierce are two sisters that were born and bred in the deepest of the deepest of southern places, the beautiful yet tragic state of Alabama. They were soon removed from formal schooling when it was realized that Allison was leaving deep crescent-moon-shaped bite marks on the arms of the boys in her class and Catherine discovered that she could raise her body temperature at will to 102 degrees and had to be sent home daily due to self-induced fever.
;)
Exhibit #2
Secret at the red button is the album's opener, something like a sonical appetizer. It's coming straight to you from the slay-me-with-an-accordion department, with a Tom Waits vibe to boot.
got a secret
can you keep it?
swear this one you'll save.
better lock it in your pocket,
taking this one to the grave.
if I show you,
then I know you won't tell what I said.
because two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.
Exhibit #3
Enjoy Sticks and Stones (the psychotic video comes as a bonus, although it's ripping off Garbage's video for Queer..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GkjO5ll7EY):
sticks and stones will break your bones
and leave you lying in the mud
but you get scared when we're alone
like I might suck your blood...

Oh Catherine.

The Pierces - Kill! Kill! Kill!
you can wash my brain
you can tear out my heart
but I will never forget you
For the people that went under our skin and never left.
Right, if anybody knows how we make a red button appear in the comment box, do share the knowledge, please.
Oh, very nice! My heart just shattered.
I've been enjoying The Pierces for awhile now, but hadn't seen the videos. Thanks.
Who ever says you don't like female vocals??? :P
Hear ya go.
That Catherine chick reminds me of someone ..... can't put my finger on it.
lak, that's great! But do keep in mind that she's mine :P
bradfox, you're very welcome. Good to see a fellow Pierces' enjoyer :)
Joxy, I will only name names to my lawyer when I sue those people for sycophancy :P
Oh thank you very much, Chris! And you are no longer grounded ;)
Please listen to the mp3 Chris kindly posted for me :) Or should I say Listen! Listen! Listen! :)
So this means I can go out and play again?
Why yes, but I'm expecting you to be back home by 19:00, tiger.
Until about a year plus ago, my attraction to female vocalists consisted of a bit of Supremes, some Heart, and of course Blondie. Nowadays, it's about 75%. I think you just tipped the scale to 77%, thanks.
As far as the red button code - go to "Mog Forums" (at the bottom of the page) - got to the forum "Website Support" - open the Topic "Some quick technical tips for using MOG by Bartleby" - 5 entries up from the bottom of that thread, there is an entry by poebegone on 2008-06-14 11:58:27 that gives the code for the red button and instructions on use. Don't forget to omit the tilde signs (~) at the beginning and end of the mp3 file when pasting it in the code. Best of luck. If you have trouble, we're here for ya.
My wife is the same exact way - very picky w/ female vocals, almost detests all of 'em. Siouxe Sioux and Bjork are two of the few. It's a rare find to get someone like The Pierces. I like it a lot. It's surely a winner. Dark and yes, very Waitsesque. I'll have to pass it along to get the verdict.
Soooo ... gonna be trying out Bjork again anytime soon? Heheheh
And look, you fancy a video with vampire girls. No one expected that. ;)
(sorry, looks like waking up early is amping my sarcasm)
scot, my pleasure! I think I'm around 45% myself...
Oh thank you very much for the tips! I'll go investigate right now! :)
Eric, I like her already ;)
I detest Bjork's voice, but I love me some Siouxsie :)
I'm glad you likey! Do let me know what your lady thinks as well :)
Dale har har har :P I think the only two Bjork songs I can stand and like are It's Oh So Quiet and Army Of Me.
No worries. You speak the truth! I am an admirer of the macabre, no denying that :*
Nice Anna, I've heard it said that we are only as sick as our secrets and this is sick, (in a good way:)
Nice listen
Oh yes, we are sick and we don't want a stinking remedy ;)
Cheers!
I sense what Seinfeld refered to as a "non gay crush"? Since I am a guy I can only say, I am now absolutely smitten with these two. Yow.
Tyler, I say you have very heightened senses...
Careful of their spells! They cannot be undone, they even say so themselves :)
The Pierces - Kill! Kill! Kill! {again, for testing purposes}
Thank you scot and poe, enigma is now solved!
Also, I totally forgot to show off my signed setlist....
Do I want to know why you were called a "thief", and in writing even?....
This is GREAT! Reminds me somewhat of Kate Bush. (and that's never a bad thing.)
Love that video, too... It's like that Garbage video combined with one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen... "The Vanishing" (the original... not the crappy American remake)
Oh... and you can add "Human Behavior" to your small cadre of Bjork songs you like, right? no? oh, well... I tried.
Thanks much!
I know the feeling about vocals and them coming from a lady. I seem to only like "certain" female vocalist and I hate it when they sound whiney. I like this a lot Anna, and it doesnt hurt she is easy on the eyes.
Oh yay, John! And agreed about the Kate Bush vibe :)
OH The Vanishing (I'm pretending the remake never happened, hard to believe it was the same director that did both films) was SO good!
hehe sorry :) I do think that Human Behavior's video is amazing {all hail Gondry}.
You're welcome! :*
Kevin, with you on whiney. I'll add high-pitched and pretentiously sexy to the list.
Glad you find her/them to be easy on both the eyes and ears :)
oh, my.
I don't usually like female vocals...but I like this. Bewitched....
oh... one more think, Anna.. Happy Belated MOGiversary!
A hit with me. And they are ripping off Blair Witch, not Garbage. Entrancing stuff, Anna...
Amber, I enthusiastically welcome you to the female world of sonical sorcery! :)
Thank you very much, John! :*
Mark, I think it's safe to say they are ripping both Blair Witch and Garbage off.
Glad I could offer something that tickled your ears pleasantly :)
Hmmm...a little gimmicky, but catchy.
Troy, good point. I really like 'em, but they lose me when I sense that they're playing it too much, if you get my drift.
Let if flow, ladies!
pierced! sinister sisters are wicked.
"two can keep a secret if one of them is dead" - i am taking that one to the grave. i DIG this way deep under, darkly one. (;
Reminds me of Tori Amos on that first song. Not bad, thanks for the headsup.
Sorry I am late.
Glad you think so, poe, my sister in darkness (that sounds like a cult, but it's not)!
You're very welcome, uncle A :)
Chris, eh, time is a relative thing. Liking the gals?
Dude, that chick in the last pic is you isn't it?
What's up? I didn't know you were a superstar. Well not a superstar like that. I always thought of you being this kinda superstar:
Is "exquisite" a word that can be combined with an understating qualification without getting the English language police all riled up? If so, I'll say The Pierces are pretty exquisite.
Chris, HA! I wish.
The girl in the picture you posted looks a lot like me when I hadn't had Nutella in a week. Withdrawal is a bitch, what can I say...
Pekka, the English language police have put a price on my head, so I'm afraid that I'm in no position to say...or get riled up, for that matter.
But yes, they are :)
