Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited

Posted over 5 years ago
15 years after Serge Gainsbourg's death, one of the most influencial musicians, 14 artists covered some of his songs in this album (released 4/2006). No need for me to blah or mplah, here's what you'll stumble into:- Franz Ferdinand & Jane Birkin (who was married to Gainsbourg) -A Song For Sorry Angel- Cat Power & Karen Elson - I Love You, Me Either (Je t’aime moi non plus)- Jarvis Cocker & Kid Loco - I Just Came To Tell You That I'm Going- Portishead - Requiem for Anna (correct me if I'm wrong but I think this was their first fresh appearance after 8 years)- Faultine, Brian Molko & Françoise Hardy - Requiem For A Jerk- Michael Stipe - L'Hôtel (guitars, production & synths by James- x Smashing Pumpkins- Iha)- Tricky - Au Revoir Emmanuelle- Marianne Faithfull & Sly and Robbie - Lola R. For Ever- Gonzales, Feist & Dani - Boomerang 2005- Marc Almond & Trash Palace - Boy Toy- Placebo - The ballad of Melody Nelson- The Rakes - Just a man with a job- The Kills - I call it Art- Carla Bruni - Those Little ThingsDelicious.

  5. Manos says Is this really any good? Part of the reason I love Gainsbourg is the era in which he was recording - you can hear it in every song. This sort of "updating" scares me, and it so rarely works.

  6. terese says that's a really good track listing....will have to check it out.

  7. Anna says Tim, I like it. What can I say, maybe it's cause of the music I like in general. The only thing I can be certain of is that all the covers were made in a very respectful & refreshing way.

  8. stevegoz says Truly delicious are the two albums of Gainsbourg material, Intoxicated Man and Pink Elephants, that Nick Cave bandmate Mick Harvey released last decade. Get 'em!

  20. d0gstar says Luna's version of Bonnie and Clyde, while not included here, is great too. It's on their album Penthouse, as well as on their recent, sadly posthumous, Best Of. The companion disc to the best of has another version which is great as well.

  21. Soulfunksticat says This album has definitely grown on me. I actually don't listen to many of these bands so it was sort of a "discover two birds with one round piece of plastic" or however that saying goes.

  22. LyricalRevolution says Was he Charlotte Gainsbourg's father? The actress who co-stars alongside Gael Garcia Bernal in The Science of Sleep?
    Permalink posted 10/05/2006
  23. Davis Presley says Lyrical Rev: Yes Da Pumah: I heard a good chunk of this comp and from what I remember it was pretty faithful. I might need to hear it again for a refresher. The Portishead track is the one that stood-out from what I remember. That's mainly because it was something new. John Zorn's label (Tzadik) also did a comp a while back that is also worth checking out. Marc Ribot/Mike Patton/Elysian Fields/Medeski, Martin, & Wood/Cibo Matto/Blonde Redhead/Eyvind Kand/etc./etc. This one is pretty good also. Stevegoz: The Mick Harvey album is very good. Didn't he do two albums of covers? Shoe: Where did the "Shoe" nickname originate from?

  24. Anna says raithrover you are now a trusted MOGger. d0gstar thank you for that info :) Soulfunksticat you gotta love such discoveries :) Davis, thank you for the tip also. My multiple personalities love that you adress me in two seperate ways :P It's silly actually, one of my girlfriends turned around & said to me one day: you look like a shoe. But a high-heeled one. So, we now call each other sneaker, boot, sandal, depending on how decent or crappy we look. Hey, you asked :)
