Is this worth it?

Posted almost 4 years ago

Obviously, I'm attending July 15th (GOGOL FOOKING BORDELLO!). My 'problem' is with July 16th. I'm not sure if I'll have to pay tickets for this yet, but the festival takes place in Athens, and I'll have to stay an extra day at a hotel, so there is extra cost no matter what.

In general, I am a bit of a snob with big bands that come here when they are old (especially if I haven't seen them young; I'm afraid they'll ruin what I imagined they would be). But I thought I'd ask you guys what you think. Are the Sex Pistols worth seeing, even for historical reasons? I have a feeling they will not be good, but it's The Sex Pistols, and I'm tempted, know what I mean?

Thank you in advance!

Same question goes for New York Dolls, methinks.

Usually I am a fan of seeing any history making band whenever you get the chance...but someting about seeing the Sex Pistols in  2008 just doesn't seem right to me. Same answer goes for the Dolls...those bands are SUCH producuts of the time and the scene they were born in that these reunions just seem sort of artificial...in the mean time I will keep working on my time machine!

Exactly...there is a part of me that says it's artificial and purely for show-me-the-money! reasons and that they are not in an age that they be shooting raw energy from the stage & be good to watch (thought I can't know that for sure), and another part that says "it's the Sex Pistols, for crying out loud!"...

You better schedule Joy Division shows in its destinations! :)

Those are two bands that I can definitely see both sides of the arguement...it might not be as magical as the first time around, but man...to be able to tell your grandkids that you saw the Sex Pistols would be so cool...you would be the coolest lady in the retirement village for sure!

IMHO, if you are going to this show you aren't seeing The Sex Pistols - you are seeing soe guys who used to be in The Sex Pistols. But I am still tempted to see the New York Dolls next month when they play here...but that is only a £20 show...

Joxy, oooops....not even for historical reasons as far as you're concerned, eh?

Tickets for each day are 55Euros, but if I get a 2 day ticket till June 20th, that's 75Euros in total. If I get on the guest list, it's free, of course, but that might mean an extra day at a hotel, which would be around 50-60 Euros....I hate concert economics! Also, I don't know how The Sex Pistols are live now, I don't want to witness a possible wreck.

ahahha Stefan, tell us how you really feel ;)

That is how I feel. :P I couldn't give a tosh about the Sex Pistols. I know they were great, and I bet they were great back then and were important back then. The music to me now really doesn't touch me much.

So, what IS the rest of the bill like? ;) I tried to find it on google, but I couldn't... Which probably says more about my computer skills than anything else. ;)

Too bad about the hotel, that's the real killer right there. For 20 euros extra, that's like nothing. How about pulling an all nighter? (a)

Option #1: 1337 hotel, breakfast -yeah right, u'll probably sleeping- , a night will cost u your week salary, clean seats and maybe free matches and shampoo.

Option #2: Pyro's -not so 1337- house at teh centre of Athens, nice music, drinks, board games n cards, no TV, and free aspirines and sofas.

Stefan, sorry, you were really asking about the bill, I thought you were teasing me. You should be able the picture I uploaded, it's shows the line up for both days; it's at the beginning of my post.

Well, the first day should end around 01:00. The next day will start around 18:00 (I think). I might be able to do it, not sure about my party though...

aahhaha Pyro, you should rent your house no matter what, that's a gorgeous brochure there! Talk about promoting skills....

I'm not shy! OK, I am a bit shy, but I'm mostly trying to be really careful so that I don't to 'exploit' peeps I like. Those I don't like, not so much :)

But I honestly appreciate the offer deeply :)

Nope not even for historical reasons. Like STefan said, the Pistols are a legendary band... but the band on that stage aren't gonna be the Sex Pistols that saif FU to the establishement in '77 (and then got outclassed by The Clash ;)... they are just some guys trying to relive past memories and earn a quick buck. To use a footballing analogy, its like going to see Pele, but instead of the magical striker, you only get to see the man who advertised viagra on Brazillian  tv...

Boy, if you feel so strongly about this, I should start biting my nails about what Neill has to say...

Oh yeah, Stefan, Greek festivals are small, since their target group is small.

I think so, too. My soft spot for that day is Gogol; I've already assigned friends to keep an eye on me during their set, so that I don't get completely drunk & throw my bra at them ahahhaha

OK...we all know I'm a concert whore and that it's hard for me to turn down live music.  I saw The Violent Femmes a couple of years ago and it was strange.  They sounded great but were wearing Tommy Bahama shirts and had grey hair.  Add It Up was bizarre to say the least, but still very enjoyable.  I bet these old geezers would be similar.  Or they may be a total train wreck.  Good times, either way.

I say, if it isn't too much more money, go.  When it's part of a festival it's all good.  Would I make a trip just to see The Sex Pistols (or The New York Dolls)?  Probably not.   But when it's backed by other music AND you're already there...how do you turn your back on history?  It's not like they are taking anything away from you besides a small amount of time.  Time spent listening to music.  What are we debating again?  :)

And if Pyro is anything like me, I wouldn't offer my couch unless I really would like you to stay.  I would take advantage of his generousity and be ready to repeat the favor some day, for him or some other MOGGER...or maybe a MOGGER and her family, on holiday from Seattle...  ;P

And my couch is yours anytime, too.

I'd think both the Dolls and The Pistols would be disapointing.  Do you really want to see some 50 year old men in drag?  You could go to a low class drag bar for cheaper, and probably more amusement.  No Johnny Thunders, No "Killer Kane", No Thanks.  For free maybe.

It's all a money grab for the Pistol's.  There are so many of these festivals all over the world the line up's are looking the same.  These festical's don't seem to have the allure they once did.

Well, it can be from 60 to 100 Euros more. It's not a crazy amount, but I'm not exactly crapping money right now (sic). If they are a train wreck, I'll have to get drunk, so that makes it 60 to 150 Euros more ;)

Awww you and Pyro are both sweetness and delight :)

July 15th - Massive Attack, Gogol Bordello, The National, Imam Baildi, Cyanna
July 16th - Sex Pistols, 63HIGH, The Courteeners, New York Dolls

Although i've gotta admit that the NY Dolls still put on a great show that isn't "self-parody", it seems like day 1's the day.

There's going to be a lot of losers there, it's not going to be a punk rock scene. You'll be catching them smack in the middle of a summer long european tour, not worth it unless you are a diehard fan.

Ok, here's my 2 cents worth. I saw Roger Waters & Pulp at Coachella even though I'm not into them much at all. And you know what? I was SO glad that I did because they are a part of musical history and they put on a great show and I happened to be there so why the fuck not?!

It's the goddamn Sex Pistols, GO!!!!! I command thee, hehe! I would love to see them, not only for the historical aspect but also for the sheer bufoonery/entertainment value that John Lydon would provide. Did you see that article where he was threatening to kill the "*Isle Of Wighters*:http://mog.com/Ben_Heller/blog_post/167600#comments? Tff! Of course, there's also the myriad gloating possibilities afterwards on Mog: "Well, when I saw the Sex Pistols in Athens, blah blah blah de blah . . . ."

Sure they're not the same band & they're old but you're going to be there  anyway, it's worth it for the nostalgia haha!

I have to say that I focused on the Sex Pistols here because I am more attached to them than I am to NYD. I only know a few NYD songs (just 'cause it happened to be so, not because I don't like 'em), and while I recognize their importance as a band, our relationship is not at the place where I'd pay extra to see them. If, however, I get to be on the list for that day, I'd be more than happy to get a good NYD taste!

But I'd be wary of seeing the Pistols; I can see them doing gigs for no other reason than cashing in. However, given what MOG meets have told us about your booze tolerance, I estimate your cost of getting wasted at more like 10-15 Euros...
