These New Puritans (yes, again)

Posted about 1 year ago
Time for me to wave my puritan flag again ;)Swords Of Truth is the band's new single (released on May 5th)...how to describe it? The best I can do is say that after the song is over, what you expect to hear is an explosion that will blow your ears off, and yet you have no intention of backing away.I wonder what those old puritans would have to say about all this...

  1. Universalis says ° ° ° Some special old Puritans :))) Puritan (USA) First appearing in 1920, Puritan records were made by the United Phonographic Corporation of Sheboygan and were sub-titled "America's Best Record"! By 1922, the records were produced by Bridgeport Die & Machine Co and cost 50 cents, rising to 75 cents later on. Masters were taken from Paramount throughout the label's existence and the catalogue series was usually an 11000-series. The label ceased production in 1927. 2. Bartleby says I sense there was a reason why These New Puritans would appeal to so many indie fans but couldn't put it into words until Wendy Fonarow, professor of anthropology at UCLA came along with her book "Empire Of Dirt: The Aesthetics And Rituals Of British Indie Music." Here's what she says about indie culture: ""Religious narratives show up in all expressive forms, from politics to music. I see a lot of the religious narrative of Puritanism in the indie music scene; the idea that, to have the pure divine experience, it has to be direct and unmediated. So the smaller and more intimate a show is, the 'truer' fans believe their experience was, compared to someone who saw them later on in a bigger venue. That's why so many people claim to have seen the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club. You can also find the aesthetic of Puritanism in the way indie people present themselves, such as childlike clothing, this idea of returning to the golden age of childhood or the musical past." Read the whole article from The Guardian here.

  3. Universalis says ° ° ° Amazing how some people seem to see proofs of their own beliefs thru someone else's actions... endless subject of debate indeed :)))

  4. Anna says Francois! Talk about sweet vintage puritans there! I knew you'd deliver. And I can also make a wild guess that the old puritans would not exactly approve of the new ones ;) Michael, I did not see this connection coming. Interesting. I am not very sure about its rightness tho. Indie people and their lifestyle do carry those elements of Puritanism, but, on the other hand, they have so many more things opposed to Puritanism. So, I'm not sure that it's accurate to connect the group to Puritanism. But I'd have to read the whole book to form a more solid opinion on the author's views. BTW, you don't like TNP, right? :)

  6. B42 says Nice to have you back Anna, weekend mogging just wasn't the same. Are you still doing the radio gig? Good catch on the Gaurdian article Michael. F, any idea who recorded on the Puritan label or am I going to have to look it up? ;)

  8. Anna says "antique Greece"...I like that, I'm keeping it! :) Awww, thank you for saying that, B :) Nope, no more radio, they cut off their weekend shows about a month ago.

  9. B42 says Going on in your career to television perhaps? With the all of the new money David has to play with maybe he can launch Live MogTV.

  10. Anna says Didn't TV kill a radio lass once? ;) But, me aside, the MogTV (or MogRadio even!) idea is marvelous. DAVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID! ;)

  12. Anna says You know, after having a rambling MOG account for almost 2 years now, I never thought that someone would call me "well balanced"...and to my face, even! Oh the nerve of some people ;P Thank you, B, you are a very precious MOGger, if I may say so :)

  14. amber says NYP are one of the artists (of ??168?? albums) our brother Dale crammed onto my laptop last weekend. I will move them up in the "listen to" queue. Thanks for giving me a starting point!

  15. Dale says Yeah, I stumbled upon this video and got the song massively stuck in my head. It's become one of my favorite songs of the year. So yes, I took the opportunity to mainline the music-crack right into Amber's laptop (Kate's too). The lesson: don't leave me alone with your laptop, especially with the Gigabeat and USB cable. Muwahahaha!

  16. Bartleby says Well, to be awfully blunt with you Anna I did see them at Astoria with Neill and Helen and they did not particularly push my indie button... Coming back to Prof Fonarow's comments, I thought it was just too good to be true. There she was talking about Puritanical values and sure enough I had to make the connection with These New Puritans -- Of course, her discourse is a bit systematic but it was fun to read. Nothing new but fancy food for thought. -- Hell, the whole tribe thing applied to urban societies is as old as Levi-Strauss (born 1908).

  17. Augusts1 says Heard of them but hadn't heard their music. Liking this song alot. Very tribal & menacing.

  18. Mike the Knife says I'm only Puritanical when it comes to liking these guys. And "Swords of Truth" tore me head off. No need for the dunking stool or the stocks, Anna. I remain in the TNP cult.

  19. Pyro says Swords, i wasn't talking about that truth, i wasn't talking about that truth, i wasn't talking about that truth - yeah- it's confusing.

  20. Anna says Cheers, C! Ain't that the sad truth, man. Here's to the new puritans! Michael, allow me to be jel that you saw them with Helen and Neill, even though you didn't like them :) I enjoyed your puritanic connection ALot :D And nothing better than fancy food for thought, except maybe than British junk food, with appetizing conversation topics ;) Amber, we have such a generous brother, don't we :) And would you look at that, we double EMCD-ed you! Dearest brother, you, my laptop and the Gigabeat and USB cable should not just be left alone, but we should all chip in for the room :) Uncle A, "tribal and menacing", you are right on money! Check this out as well: http://mog.com/Anna/blog_post/132334. Mikey, "tore me head off" is correct. You are now the Initiator of the cult..new members be scared, be very scared... Pyro hahahaha mixing and matching, are we? ;) And go to bed, it's 1 o'clock here! :P
