Rock Umbrella

Posted about 1 year ago
For those of us who feel that if we tolerate Rihanna's voice our children will be next, salvation is here. This is the new Umbrella.Manics style. It {indie} rocks. It's lovely. An ideal song to listen to while sitting next to your boyfriend/girlfriend, with your car swallowing up one asphalt mile after the other. It might be old news to many of you (though I didn't see another post of this; if I'm forgetting something, do pardon me), but it's on repeat for me.I'm rambling yet again, but this is just an awesome cover.

  2. Anna says Owww :( it plays for me. Maybe if you refresh the page?

  3. Marigold says hmm. yeah...it just keeps trying to load with no sound. I will try later after I am done uploading a record somewhere. ;) Maybe that is hogging all my bandwith or something?

  4. loganlenz says This is an excellent rendition. Very fun.

  5. Anna says Oh you are spoiling me ;) If the problem remains after that, try the {unofficial} video, though its sound is a bit low: Glad you think so, loganlenz! It has been entertaining me all day today :)

  6. iwanttofillyourmouthwithspiders says Okay, the one day someone posts something that i really want to listen to, and i forgot my headphones! Not sure my co-cube dwellers would appreciate me cranking it, but based on that intro, i am getting antsy! (Is it okay to post a comment about a song if you havent listened to the song yet?)

  7. Spike says It makes the grade, as they say here in the U.S. of A. Speaking of which, I noticed that you, ostensibly a Greek, used the word "mile," which shows you respect our archaic system of measurements. We're okay; it's those pesky Macedonians you have to watch out for.

  8. dachmo says Spike you have to watch out for this Anna, I used to believe she was actually from New Jersey faking the whole Greek thing, I'm still not totally convinced.

  9. Anna says iwanttofillyourmouthwithheadphones....that's such a bummer! It would drive me nuts. And posting a comment about a song if you haven't listened to the song yet is encouraged at my MOG. It's more fun and risky this way ;) Charles, haha I didn't even realize what I was doing, you guys are affecting me too much :) And they are not called Macedonias btw. I am a Macedonian. Macedonia is where I live, it's in Greece. Their country was called Skopia and then F.Y.R.O.M. . They want the name, but they don't have it, even if your maps say otherwise. There are on going discussions on the matter. Be careful when you say that to Greeks (not me, I'm harmless) :) David, stop outting me! Can't a New Jersey gal be in peace...

  10. cameron96 says Anna Anna AAA!!! hehehe , nice its a bit playful , nice use of clean and dirty guitars... it would do nicely on the radio here - it has a killer chorus that seems to be really popular with shark skinned suits with pens and cadillacs looking for the next Elvis- Bono...thats a compliment - great ending too...youre right about the driving part - its a pedal pusher for reals x)

  11. TroyPowers says Hmmmm.... First let me admit that I was among the millions of sheep that loved the original version of this song. Second, let me state that originally, I hated the tune. I thought that the whole rain/umbrella metaphor tried to be deep, but only succeeded in "trying". I thought it was extremely juvenile, and just an all around crappy song. But, even though I don't listen to the radio, I was constantly bombarded with it at every club or social gathering I went to, so it kind of grew on me. Crappy song-writing aside, it's still a catchy tune...for better or worse. So...this cover really doesn't make an impression on me one way or the other. I like it for the same reasons I liked the original, and I also hate it for the same reasons. I say, if you're going to cover such a tremendously wonderful/terrible pop song, you've got to make it more your own. Bring something to it. They could have changed up the lyrics a little bit, or at least made the delivery more...just MORE. Like a real heavy metal cover would have been interesting. Ya know? If they had just turned it into something hard and raw. To me, this is the same song with some guitars thrown in. The whole point of covering a song is to breathe new life into it. This cover doesn't do that. Maybe 10 years from now, when Umbrella is forgotten, this would be cool. But, if you're gonna cover a song that was the only song on the planet less than a year ago, you'd better put a really good spin on it. That's my 2 cents, and it's worth a dollar.

  12. TroyPowers says I'd like to hear Marilyn Manson cover this song.

  13. democlez says Troy: I hate to double-post, and I don't want it to seem like I'm shamelessly plugging my mog posts, but you should check out Lillasyster's cover of Umbrella. Calling it a heavy metal version may be a bit of a stretch, but it does have a 80's metal feel to it.

  14. dachmo says See, I knew it. Macedonia is just North of the malls at Pine Brook and West of the Garden State Parkway, which as we all know is in NEW JERSEY!

  15. Joxley says Hmmm, I'm not sure its as good for bumping and grinding as the original... and you know I'm all about that ;)

  16. Anna says I like your description and your images, C! Push that pedal and rock on.... :) Daniel, try the video I posted for the song above, that should work. Thank you for the links! I hadn't heard those versions. And how sweet of you to say so, my NIN guru :) Troy, what I mind mostly with the original is her voice. It's just unbearable to my ears. That aside, I know Manics' music enough to see how they got their own elements in there and which they are, and trust me, they did. Needless to say, if it doesn't do anything for you, it is so and that's how the umbrella crumbles. :) Manson would do an awesome cover of Umbrella...or that Panther character ;) David AAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHA You are so grounded.... ahhahahhahahhahhaha

  18. Anna says ahhaha Joxy :P Well, I get my bumping and grinding to the cover easily, if that helps ;)

  19. TroyPowers says Democlez: There's no shame in shamelessly promoting your own posts. I recently made a great one about something-or-other here. Yeah, your metal version is better. Further removed from Rihanna. I could have gone for some hard-core screaming and head-banging though. Wow, dachmo has actually proven that Anna is really from Jersey. Wow, and I used to think she was so sexy. That whole Greek thing gave her such a mystique. Now she's just a plain ol' American broad. No offense to any plain ol' American broads who may read this.
    Permalink posted 04/28/2008
  20. Anna says Cheers to that, Oatmeal! Daniel, no worries :) Troy, my dear, you'll just have to sing to it and post a video. Do it for me, your New Jersey broad.

  21. TroyPowers says Baby, any video I filmed for you would be totally unsuitable for Mog.
    Permalink posted 04/28/2008
  22. Anna says We can ask David H to roll with the "musical nudist colony" MOG tagline again...just say the word ;) P.S. And if I may add so, I like Manics' cover the most, because their version is the closest one to the music I fancy to begin with, so it's appeal on me is to be expected :)

  23. TroyPowers says Of course, Jersey. Your version is just fine...if you like that sort of thing. :p Oh, and I was thinking more of a "Musical swingers' vacation." But, that's just me.

  24. Joxley says Hmmm, well I think we should get a video of Anna's bumping and grinding...

  25. Neill says The Manics have done some great covers in the past; "Theme From M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless)" "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" The have won every award going in UK over the past 10 years but have never been able to transfer that success to the US...

  26. Max Load says Fortunately I live far enough from the real world to have only heard the original a few times. It may be cheesy, but I like it. This version sounds like cabaret to me.
    Permalink posted 04/28/2008
  27. Anna says I am game with that, Panther; if you promise to cuddle afterwards. Swingers Cuddlers Anonymous mwuahahhahah Joxy, fine, but it will cost you 12 inches. (dirty not- so- inside joke) Neill, yeah...it's one of those unfortunate situations of good British bands that for some reason cannot cross that ocean... Max, cabaret? Didn't occur to me, but I like it :)))
