The Underrated Art Of Video Enactment

Posted over 2 years ago

Oh c'mon now, admit it. You've done it. Whether it was behind closed doors or on youtube; when you were a teenager or 3 days ago; to a Beyonce or a Nirvana video; for fun or physical exercise (what?); the whole nine yards or just a particular gesture.

I think that video enactment is an art, in the same way that playing air-guitar is. My next imaginary project will probably be a group of people that perform in front of a video by re-enacting it (unimaginatively called The Enactments). We're going to be big. Watch this space ;)

The enactment I'm most proud/ashamed of is to Garbage's Queer:

I never did well with idols, but back in the day this was released, Shirley Manson came as close as anyone has. I even had the same shirt she has in the video (really!). Queer's video is as erotic as it is psychotic, so it struck a chord with my 16 year old innocent soul (hahahhaha). So yeah, I used to enact the whole thing, and I'm not ashamed to admit it (I can think of 2 worst things I could be doing with my time).

So tell me; did you ever? A little bit? I won't tell.

girl, at that age, I spent (too) many hours in front of that basement mirror. Bowie, Bolan, Mott...but mostly Alice.

NOICE! I see that you had quite a theatrical vein. I'd pay good money to see you do your Alice routine. You're officially invited to join The Enactments!

Really? With the razor and all? Oh my. I remember lots of singing in the mirror to Duran Duran and Depeche Mode, but not specifically miming any videos. Now I feel underprivileged.

Pushing, razor-handling, clothe-tearing, scotch-taping, dragging by the feet, the lot...

Don't! Enact a video today, it's never too late!

Can't say I've done full reenactments, but I do almost on a daily basis shake it at some point for the g/f for a song on the radio.  Sometimes small scale performances aren't out of the question.

Me and Jennifer Tobias sang to "Easy Lover" by Philip Bailey & Phil Collins when I was 14...and if you tell anyone that I did, I'll deny everything.

OK, OK, after some soul searching, I remembered being pretty much capable of doing the little dance Michael Hutchense does during the chorus of this song. Quite effectively as well, given that I kept my shirt on. ;)

Um ... should we tell Annie that MOG posts are public?

Scot, naww! It's my love of the theatre! :)

Dana, you are such a good boyfriend. I need to train mine better on the subject, although he can do a pretty good imitation of Muse's Bellamy, when Bellamy goes all operatic and Queen-y.

    Neill, that was truly hysterical!

(I can absolutely picture you do that - I think I've actually seen you do it a couple of times-... you'd put the kidies to shame; welcome to the band!)

Annie, nice.... what happens on mog stays on mog (not that that's much help..) ;) Your secret is safe with us mwuahhahahah!

Dale, I KNEW there'd be something! We love the theatre in the family, no way you would have escaped the genes.

Welcome to the band. You don't have to take your shirt off to be in it, but it helps (this tagline will get us far, I can feel it) ahahhaha

Jeff, while looking for the Chuck Berry video, I also found this:

    ahahhahhahaha!

Cinful, Blondie is timeless, so you're safe. Not to mention that many singers today still go through it with Blondie.

    Thank you for sharing!

I can also do 'Common People' reasonably well. To be honest, Jarvis Cocker has a subliminal influence on all my hand gestures.

Anytime, Jeff! It's all about education ;)

I demand Stefan and Robin to join the band as a Cocker duo. We're going to be rich!

Kevin, for some reason I find no difficulty in picturing that. I bet you could teach that Stipe block a thing or two about dancing!
