I'm in a Brazil state of mind.

Posted about 4 years ago
Having seen Terry Gilliam's fantastic *"Brazil":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_%28film%29* yesterday, it really is no wonder.I have such a soft spot for cult sci-fi movies that deal with suppressing governments..Ary Barroso's Aquarela do Brasil is the sonic motif of the film, and we have the pleasure of hearing it in various versions, all lovely, if I may say so.I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted now, but I thought I'd share this version of the song by Kate Bush here. And if anybody calls for me, tell 'em I'm in Brazil...

  2. iwanttofillyourmouthwithspiders says Wow, mention of that movie doesnt come up very often. I remember watching it once in high school... one of De Niro's finer performances really... I may have to check that out again. (I am sure the song post is spectacular as well, but once again, being at work, i gots no sound!)

  3. Anna says I know! And yes, there are some movies we see very young, and they require repetition, 'cause they simply are that good. (it's very eerie, check it out later, I think you'll like it!)

  12. annieander says I have been meaning to watch this again since Mark Kermode, BBC movie reviewer, put it on his top 10 Christmas movies of all time...I didn't catch that it was a Christmas flick the first time around...but then I was younger, don't remember but bits and pieces really. Nice remembering. That is one of those instant songs / movie connections (like Mancini's Pink Panther theme) that just pulls you right back.

  18. Augusts1 says Soulrocket posted on the dark side about this movie & here's my comment from there: I LOVE this movie, so so so much. I saw it in the theater when it first came out in '85 & have watched it numerous times over the years. Definitely in my top 10 if not top 5. It's so witty & sarcastic, love the visuals, it's just incredible w/so many levels going on & tons of symbolism. One of my fave scenes is in the restaurant w/the mother(Helmond is brilliant in this), Price, her friend & daughter & a bomb explodes & everyone tries to act like nothings happened. So symbolic of human nature, to carry on as usual in spite of awful circumstances. I just watched the 'Lost In La Mancha' doc which is an amazing film about a film falling apart(I highly recommend it if anyone hasn't seen it yet). Gilliam is brilliant even in his failures! l

  19. Bartleby says "Lost In La Mancha" is an incredible succession of misfortunes and mishaps. Poor Jean Rochefort... "Brazil" never moved me as much as "Bandits" -- If you really like Terry Gillian's cinema, you should check out his idol, Chris Marker's films. Warning they could be construed as artsy and indigestible but they're highly rewarding. ("12 Monkeys" is a remake of his "La Jetée)

  20. ciphermedia says Brazil is my all time favourite film Anna, just edging out The Coen Brothers 'Barton Fink'. I've probably watched it at least 15 times. I've got the Criterion box set, which has 3 DVDs. One is the original film, one is the much shortened version with the happy ending that the distributors/producers did themselves and tried to release, and one has the most amazing collection of info about the film. This includes interviews with Terry Gilliam & various critics about how they ran an underground campaign to get the original film released. Reviews were written in major papers and industry trade papers before the film had even been released. There's also lots of 'making of' videos, and storyboards. If you ever get the chance to get a hold of this, it's an amazing collection well worth buying.

  24. ZenPop says "Brazil" is one of the greatest movies of all-time... It's Orwell's "1984" with a wicked sense of humor... sheer brilliance. Thanks for the post, Anna... (and Kate Bush is a goddess.) If you love Brazil, then be sure to check out "Delicatessen"... another futuristic movie with a wicked sense of humor and brilliant acting and directing. ...by the team (Jeunet & Caro) that brought you "Amelie!"

I don't know if you check Mog anymore, but I'm so glad I happened upon this post. Kate Bush released "Director's Cut" today (for streaming), re-engineering some of her songs, and that's how I got here. I love Kate Bush.

But I also LOVE Brazil and Terry Gilliam films. Baron Munchausen was underrated I think. I love 12 Monkeys. I haven't seen Delicatessen, but since it was recommended in this vein, I'll be checking it out.

You mention you enjoy films about suppressing governments and while it's not sci-fi, I wonder if you have seen Robert Redford's "Milagro Beanfield Wars"? Not really sure why it popped to mind, but it did. And how about the movie "Bliss"? Anyone out there see that bizarre and fantastic movie? ( The one from 1986). Very challenging yet fulfilling.

Never heard of Chris Marker so I'll go check that out too!
