WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

ADD

A collection of thoughts that have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

~ The new Placebo album is, after all, so boring that I cancelled my pre-order. Likewise for the new Maximo Park, minus the preorder factor. All hopes now fall on Arctic Monkeys. No pressure.

~ Never let the dyslexic one type the album sticker:

Consider the rhythm upset...(nice album tho)

~ It's becoming increasingly harder for bands to hold my interest on stage. Am I getting good or are they getting bad? ;) (which reminds me that maybe I should catch up with my concert diary series)

~ I loathe Lady Gaga.

~ While I was notorious for having crushes on hip and delicate {preferably British} boys, it seems that my tastes have changed dramatically: Peter Capaldi, Hugh Laurie, Jon Stewart, Anthony Lane (film reviewer for The New Yorker, no idea what he looks like).

(GoldDigger playing in the background)

~ Twitter annoys me. Although not as much as Facebook. I mean Facebook takes the award for most annoying website, hands up. When you meet someone, they first ask you if you're on Facebook and then what you do for a living. Not to mention that every time that someone takes your picture you have to remember to say "DON'T put it on Facebook", 'cause otherwise you get all sorts of random people looking at you without you having any say in the matter. And no, I don't want to keep in touch with old schoolmates. If I wanted to, I would have.

~ Picture from the Maximo Park show. Subtly sponsored by Audi?

~ Newish bands seem to be developing a we-are-not-going-to-play-your-favourite-song-even-though-it's-a-big-hit-of-ours-and-we-can-since-we-don't-have-many-albums syndrome. Evidence? Ladytron not playing Sugar, The Cinematics not playing A Strange Education and Human, and Maximo Park not playing Graffiti and By The Monument. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?

~ You probably don't know this, but I love The Doors. So many colours, scents, and flavours there, and they still haven't faded. I'm going through a Doors personal revival phase now and I'm loving it!

~ After serious consideration and experimentation, I decided that it's all true. I absolutely do not like The Rolling Stones (runs away).

~ This video of Florence (minus the Machine) dancing to Beyonce's Single Ladies always cracks me up:

~ I went from snobbing White Lies because of their lyrics to becoming a complete whore for them within a month. I EMCD-ed myself. Is that legal? Will I go blind?

~ I'm looking for a good Adventure pc game. Something in Syberia/Black Mirror/The Longest Journey area. If you have any recommendations, do let me know.

~ If you get the chance, do see Everlasting Moments: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everlasting_Moments

Pure Class.

~

That is all. Carry on with your day.

Great thoughts.  Glad you gave me a heads up on Placebo.  I was seriously considering getting it.  The fact that it's on Vagrant should have gave you a hint that they weren't really trying.  Not that there's anything wrong w/ Vagrant.  They just seem to get a number of quasi-through the ringer acts these days.

Re: bands keeping your interest on stage - seeing a live band should be an experience.  If they're not going to do anything differently than when you listen to them through your speakers, it definitely isn't worth checking them out. Case in point - Interpol, Death Cab, Ladytron was sort of boring too.  Oh and some dumb video sequences behind you doesn't make your band fun to watch live.  Just my 2 cents.

re: bands not playing your favorite song.  Bands who do this sort of irritate me, especially if it's on purpose.  It just tells me that they're not interested in making the fan happy, that they're tired of playing that song and that they're all about doing what they want to do.  Seriously The Cinematics didn't play Strange Education???

re: fb - it's sort of odd to see old school pictures of oneself pop up from time to time.  It almost scares me that one day, it'll be incriminating. I was always anti-social networking and then gave in (so I guess not always) but now I draw the line at Twitter.  The way everyone is pounding that name in the ground makes me want to take that word, Emo and hipsters and grind it in the trash compactor forever.

Do I sound angry?  Don't mean to sound angry.

i have mixed feelings about bands not playing their 'hits' at shows. i saw NIN on friday, and they didn't do 'closer' or 'hurt'. instead, they focused on the last two outings. having seen them 5 times now, it was kind of refreshing to hear a new set. on the other hand, i did leave feeling unsatisfied.

who is lady gaga and why is she on the cover of rolling stone? seriously, though, i saw her on some tv show last summer and i thought ''wow, a cheap, uninteresting version of dale bozzio''.

    i miss missing persons.

i love FB, if it weren't for FB i wouldn't be where i am right now with my music. it is amazing for networking. (but yes, it does get annoying). the 'ignore' button comes in handy.

Pass the roofie colada (ahahhahahahhah), dear gaga, and can I interest you in a cucumber sandwich?

Eric, I'm afraid it's not good. And I'm a hardcore Placebo fan :/ I am not angry with them (I could easily do that in my parallel universe), but I wouldn't recommend it as a buy.

I agree with you completely. If they don't have anything to offer on stage (and I don't mean adding a clown act), they really shouldn't be up there. Especially in this day and age when we have SO many bands to choose from.

And Ladytron is rubbish live to begin with.

Bands live and songs: it's such a turn off. And we're talking about relatively new bands with not many albums or hits, we're not unreasonable. I should have slapped a Cinematic, I was two steps away from all of them.

I can't wait to get arrested when someone posts a picture of a 17 year old me smoking a joint at a school trip. I should start saving for bail money.
I think that one of the reasons that Twitter annoys me is exactly that: that you can hear it EVERYWHERE.

Lady GG is basically a product. Like ketchup. One beyond its expiration date. ahahhaha

And as for FB, if you have an actual purpose there as a musician that makes absolute sense. My biggest problem is when people like me who don't have an FB get sucked into it without wanting to.

I wish you had a chance to see NIN during the 'Lights over North America' tour. That was by far the most amazing concert experience I've ever had.

I'll be seeing Kings of Leon live soon and I'm pretty stoked. I hear they are good live. If they don't play Knocked Up or Milk I'll be pretty disappointed though.

Anna, I didn't even comment on the other plethora of stuff you talked about.

I loved FB when it came out, and I still use it pretty regularly.  Although I liked it more a few updates back.

I will never get Twitter.  Besides, most users use it once, then never sign on again.  Sort of a fad social networking thing.

Bands who don't play their singles.  Hmm, it really depends.  I agree, if they have an extensive collection of tunes, hearing the singles gets old.  I like it more when those types of bands pull out the rare gems.  New bands don't have an excuse.  It's why the majority of folks go to see them anyway.

I never really got into Placebo, although they are on my list of bands to get intimate with.  Any suggestions besides the ones listed in comments?

Arms that change, eyes that lie..." Hard to think of another four lines that describe an entire relationship like that. Plus it's to a samba beat! Always dug John Densmore's drumming.

Stones...c'mon greek goddess, ya don't like the 65-66 'pop' period? Not even those cool shirts and jackets they wore?

@Sierra - ''wow, a cheap, uninteresting version of dale bozzio''.  I knew I'd seen that face before! And Missing Persons were pretty cheap to start with! Although I do have a sneaking admiration for GaGa's relentless success at publicity. While she was in London she managed to get loads of space from holding a bloody teacup! That takes talent. But seriously, I've gotta agree with Pimp and Jonh - in part. The younger Stones (up to about '74) were stunningly good - the quintessence of what you've always seemed to embrace in a rock band (be it Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, or any other skinny urban rockers with an edge). Whereas the aged, decrepit Stones - in fact, most of what they've been about since the mid-'70s? Not so much.

The Doors? The first two albums were unassailably great, and Morrison Hotel is in the same ballpark. The other collections are spotty, but, in general, wow!

As for Lady Gaga, definitely not gaga for her. Hype-o-rama, Madonna-come-lately. But I'd try on Little Boots any time she'd let me. Same goes for Florence.

Why thank you, sir. I'm like a sponge (that only sucks up the dirt). It's good, I agree, especially British English. The way most words roll off the tongue is very enjoyable. Although I have to say that Greek is probably the best for swearing. The creativity behind it is unparallel and disturbing. Have a looksy here, just to get a small taste of the endless word combinations:

Wow ... whre to start? It might be a stretch, but I'll go from the top.

It's a shame about Placebo's new album. I don't find it boring, but it certainly doesn't engage as easily as Meds. Maybe it's a grower like Sleeping With Ghosts. *shrugs* Alas, I didn't expect much from the new Maximo Park, so no disappointment there.

So the new Noisettes is worthy then? Sweet!

I'll avoid saying that you're getting snobby, and instead say that you're becoming more of a live music connoisseur. Yeah, that's the ticket. ;)

I've never heard Lady Gaga, but I recently read somewhere that she plays for both teams, so that's a bit of a strike against her in my book. Not that I necessarily care what or with whom you do things in the bedroom, but I don't want to read about it. I'm weird like that.

I've yet to get pulled into Twitter though; if it only takes 140 characters to say something, how much do you really have to say? Again, that's just me.

Nice catch on the subtle Audi bit.

I've not experienced that particular thing, but it's terrible and has no place in live music. Especially Maximo Park ... you guys have one good album, play the songs therefrom! grrr

So, it's Doors = yay, Stones = nay? I can live with that, not much of a Stones fan either. Although I tend to think the Doors got one, maybe two good albums in them, then you have to cherry-pick the good songs from the rest.

Ya, know, sometimes, it's fun to dance to something trashy. Go Florence go! :)

So ... White Lies finally got ya? Heheheheheheh. And no, you won't go blind. :)

Sorry, can't help you on the good games, we still play Neverwinter Nights around here. I'd switch but people still keep writing good FREE modules for it.

Just watched the trailer for Everlasting Moments. Exquisite. That is all.

I'm the kinda guy who hates standing in line - it feels like my worth as an individual is being challenged, somehow.

I thoroughly enjoyed your post, but someone adding Comment #64 (or whatever) feels like...standing in line.

I can't deny I had a Doors phase (about 25 years ago), but it has never recurred.  Rolling Stones have enough great records to excuse their missteps. There is only one REAL Placebo. I like the games on Facebook. Twitter is probably fun, but I am sick of hearing about it. I LOL LOL Cats. good to see ya..most excellent low intensity rant.

I am late as always, but I just got back from vacation for 2 weeks, now I can catch up on work here and I plan to post something special about my vacation (music-related, of course).

I promised myself I would not even look at any posts today--save it for Sunday when I am back again.......but I cannot help it-----I have been obsessesd, VERY obsessed, with the Stones since I can remember.  Of course everythingis subjective, and nobody should feel like they have to like a certain band just because many other people like/love them, but to say they should have retired years ago is harsh.  Have you seen thm LIVE in the past few years?  They STILL put on really amazing shows.  It is clear that Mick maintains his health b/c he exercises a lot---every day (his dad was a P.E. teacher, but I'm digressing).  I cannot imagine most 19 year olds having the kind of strength and stamina that is required to dance and run up and down HUGE stages (mostly while singing) for at least 2 hours straight.....not to mention doing that several nights a week for about 2 - 3 years straight.

I'm not trying to force anyone to like the music of a band if they don't (and I'm not directing this at just you) but if they should have stopped performing years ago, it seems odd that the last tour (which just ended last year)--and every tour before that, for that matter----were completely sold out, and in many =cities for 2 or even 3 nights in a row.

I had to put in my 2 cents on that, couldn't help it :)

I'm not a Stones hater, really. I just don't like them.
Beatles and Doors always and forever, good man! Thank you for the music :)
Since we all seem to despise Lady Gaga so much, it's a wonder she's not orbiting some random planet in a galaxy far far FAR away already...

G, what is chupacabras? Sounds a bit insulting.

I'm not sure if it's a grower, but for me it's definitely a runawayer.
The new Noisettes is enjoyable, although very different from the previous one.

"live music connoisseur." ahahhahaahha (new T-shirt time? that on the front and "snob" in the back?)

Lady Gaga is in a league of a whole new sport.... and it ain't good.
Oh that's fine. I know that you don't greet people with "goodmorningareyouonfacebook?" :)

    Merci :*

I know! Who gave them permission? Young kids today, no respect for us elders!

I think your view on the Doors' material is fair. It's just that those cherries are soooooo good!

White Lies got me alright. I'll be seeing them for the third time soon...

I always thought that your Neverwinter Nights playing is part of your charm :)

    It's a marvelous movie, I'm telling ya.

How are you? How's the training going?

Cody, it will come back in your life soon.... my crystal ball says so.
You and your Placebo, you evil mastermind!
Good to see you, too, even upside down hehe
    OI! Don't you stat me!

Andrea, late shlate! Welcome back, I do hope you had a wonderful time :)

I don't disagree with you... it's just that, no matter how active they are and whether their show is sold out or not, I have a thing with seeing musicians over a certain age "rocking" on stage. I'm sorry, but it just doesn't agree with me.

Hey niece you're latest post about post punk truth isn't coming through. Got the email but when I clicked through it says 'post not found'. Sorry it took me so long to get to this, I was gone seeing Erykah Badu & staying at Annieander's house then the next day my dad & stepmom came to visit and I stayed w/them so I had limited puter access through the resort. Then I was in a blur recuperating, lol.

Like The Noisettes tune, reminds me alot of the Duffy/Amy Winehouse retro style.

And I was a complete whore for White Lies when I first listened to their debut completely.

Placebo? Haven't listened to the new one but nothing prior has really convinced me anyway. . . .

A game I'm currently enjoying is Farenheit, though it's probably more thriller than adventure, but there's a definate emphasis on storyline.

You had an amazing couple of days!

Noisettes really changed in this second album, but I like it!

    Placebo... LALALALLAICAN'THEARYOULALALLA :P
