WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Hanging Around

Posted about 1 year ago
When I first heard The Cardigans, I did not like them at all. The music sounded pointless and the vocals annoyingly sweet. Then, they got a bit dirty and a bit tortured with Gran Turismo and convinced me that they can write memorable, emotionally-powerful songs. Yesterday I got reminded of Hanging Around, a forgotten (no more) favourite of mine and I wanted to share. Here's the video for it, which is, as well noted on line, inspired by Roman Polanski's Repulsion:Repulsion's trailer:

  2. sommer face says I so knew this was about The Cardigans when I saw the title post. Yay! I've liked them since I first heard "Carinval." Yup, I'm not one of those people who jumped on the bandwagon after they heard "Lovefool" 400 times on the radio. I love "Gran Turismo." I remember buying it right around my birtday.

  3. Lyrikhan says is this title a hint to how you are dealing with the new MOG? don't know if you happen to ever see the US version of The Office but they had a little shout out to the Cardigans....(of course it's one of those pointless, annoyingly sweet songs you spoke of)

  6. annieander says Lyrikhan - Funny! Love the office, love the Andy character...Ed Helms is perfect for the roll...now if there was some way to incorporate Rod Corddry into a character.

  7. Anna says I do remember that one, contra, it was all over the radio when it came out :) sommer face, I think Carnival was the first song I ever heard, too, though it didn't fly well with me. Gran Turismo did the trick :) Will, you naughty boy you :P Your vid made me laugh really hard, I'd never seen it before; hilarious! Cheers to that, dear Annie!

  9. Dale says Those Cardigans were sneaky, before Gran Turismo. They had the same sick sirdid dentiments, but wrapped it up in cutesy pop. They let us really see the dirt on Gran Turismo. I liked this song, it's not one with which I'm familiar.

  10. QueenofHell says I've never been grabbed by The Cardigans. My most enduring memory of their music is that whenever the 'Love me, Love me, Say that you love me...' song was played at the indie club I frequented, the men, and many women, would flee the dancefloor. Can't say I liked the collaboration with Tom Jones much either.

  11. Mike the Knife says I own a cardigan and never wear it, whereas I enjoy the Cardigans on a semi-regular basis. On a more serious note: Film fanatic that I am, I was completely engrossed in the vid. Well-executed, no?

  12. Augusts1 says I adore Nina, she's my favorite Persson. In that video they also pay homage to the band Pavement, in the hair salon segment, with their video "Cut Your Hair", witness it here: Nina was also involved in writing two songs w/her husband composer Nathan Larson(who's been in various bands like Hot One & Shudder To Think) for an indy film called "The Chateau"('99) which is a pretty damn funny movie, I highly recommend it(and the songs are pretty great too but I don't own them): And lastly, "Lovefool" eventually drew me into their web even though I loathed it after hearing it so much but after I picked up the "Romeo & Juliet" movie soundtrack which it is on I gave in & bought "First Band On The Moon". I was solidly done in w/"Gran Turismo".

  13. ketut says I originally didn't care for them and I don't know why. First Band On The Moon was a gift and the friend who gave it to me was responsible for intoroducing me to so many bands I kept playing it until I liked it.

  17. Peggah says I love the Cardigans. I was the 11 year old HOOKED on lovefool (it was a serious obsession), and I still love it. But I love almost all of their work.
