Do we really need another female singer/songwriter?

Posted about 3 years ago

Well, if she's anything like Polly Scattergood, I'll take 5, please.

~ A few words

Me and Polly got off on the wrong foot. I stumbled into her some time ago, while looking for something completely irrelevant. The particular website I was at would automatically play her songs and jam my browser. I felt irritated, and yet I registered her name to memory.

I got my claws on her debut album yesterday, and I'm ready to forgive her over the browser jamming she wasn't responsible for.

Miss Scattergood's quirky and fragile universe is one I'd get lost in any day. Her lyrics are stories, her timbre sounds like it's coming from a broken-toothed fairy, and the music is ethereal and intense at the same time.

Do enjoy the uploaded track. It builds up slowly and acquires a life of its own.

Lovely one for Other Too Endless:

I think the words "broken-toothed fairy" really hit something.  Best adjectives I've seen in a while!  Yes, more chicas like her, please, my tray is empty!

Oh good! One of the little voices in my head was telling me that it's not proper English. I did the right thing for not paying attention to it :)

    Coming right up, sir!

To the question in the title, a definite "no!". Simply because for some reason or another they can't sing normally! Why can't they get out a sentence in one flowing go like their male contemporaries, instead chopping them up like Kate Nash? It's annoying! Most sound like they are vocally impaired...

Then againn, I don't know Polly, except that a song of hers was remixed by one of those new US disco bands I'm really fond of, The Golden Filter. And when they do the pop edit, it sounds something like this: http://hypem.com/track/801470/

Stefan, why don't you tell us how you really feel? ahahhaah come on, don't be shy now ;)

I actually am pretty bored with the genre. As bored as I am with Brooklyn hipster bands. BUT Polly is an exception I gladly make.

Please Don't Touch is one of the upbeat songs. Thank you for the link!

well, speaking as a female vocalist who also writes her own songs...i hope the answer is yes. lol

though, i admit, i loathe the term 'singer-songwriter'.

must check out Polly. thanks for the tip.

It's an unfortunate term, and its overuse makes it even worse.

Glad to hear that, Dale! I thought you might make an exception, just as I did :*

Uncle A, I totally agree. If Kate Bush and Patrick Wolf had a daughter, this is what she would sound like hehe :) Merci!

if this is what a singer songwriter sound like i am sadly out of touch, which may well be the case.  i thought singer songwriters strummed acoustics to a warbling falsetto yodel in a fringe jacket perched atop a coffee house bar stool.

Yeah, I'm with GR on this one. Really phenomenal tune that keeps getting better.....nothing like a little psycho-rant at the end.

I try to avoid comparing artists on posts, especially when they're new. I think it sucks just a little to be told that you sound like some other established singer or band. But.....I have to agree with everything that's been said so far. I clearly hear Kate Bush and Sinead in here. I also got a little hint of Charlotte Gainesbourg (never a bad thing!) near the beginning. And after a couple of listens, I'm left with an overwhelming Marianne Faithful vibe, and I DEFINITELY mean that as a compliment!

    Good one, Anna! Thanks!

Haven't even listened yet - but my answer to the title is a qualified "Yes" - that is, we need more qualified singer/songwriters...

    leftoverking says:

i thought singer songwriters strummed acoustics to a warbling falsetto yodel in a fringe jacket perched atop a coffee house bar stool.

    And then there's Richard Thompson.

Though, in the same vein as Dylan, some might question the "singer" part.

Ooops.  We were talking about female singer/songwriters, weren't we?

    Sorry, RT.

I'm listening to this right now; while the voice sort of puts me in mind of the Tori/Kate axis, the song pust me most strongly in mind of Broken English-period Marianne Faithfull, particularly Why Do Ya Do It?

Or Dory Previn with Beware of Young Girls or On My Way to Where...

Whatever.  I need to follow up on this.

Thank you fro a potential new obsession, Anna.

(You may have gotten revenge for all those time-wasters...  I'm looking for new ones, though.)

Uncle A, someone here in the UK called her "the Kate Bush of the 21st century". I think that's too much too soon, but there are others that agree with us (although a bit too enthusiastically).

genderblender, I'm glad you agree! :)

Scot, I think that if a woman can make a yellow dress work, there's not much she cannot do ahhahaah

    Thank you, sir!

cpetersonart3, I see what you mean there, although I hadn't thought of Sinead before you mentioned her.

nordico, exactly! More psycho-rants, please, keep 'em coming!

I know what you mean. I sometimes do it when I feel that artist X sounds like artist Y and has nothing more to add. This really is an exception. She sounds like some of the most important female artists and yet has a soul of her own.

    You're very welcome!

G, Nitrogen Pink is amazing! I also really like Bunny Club. Weirdometer caughts fire with that one.

Anna: I don't know if it was you or Neill or Jox who first brought Polly to my attention, but I was well pleased. And it doesn't matter if we need another female singer-songwriter. Not when we want a good one like Ms. Scattergood, and get her. (Love that name!) Just to make it simple, I'll second what scot said. Here's to whispery ethereal blondes with an edge!

Sam, this all proves that we certainly did the right thing by doing the nastaaaayyyy!

POlly was good live, although she had many technical difficulties to face (shame, really).

Mike, well if Neill and Joxy are not looking, I should claim the credit ahahha :)
