I Bet You Look Good On The Devil's Dance Floor

Posted 7 months ago

I promise to avoid cliches, alcohol stories, and Irish jokes on this St. Patrick's day. To avoid making this post a cultural catastrophe, I'll try to focus on the music. You may or may not know this, but fact remains that I am a sucker for good punk-celtic fusion. This phenomenon has no explanation, no reason, no end. It just is so, and has been since the first time my ears were exposed to it. I never had the chance to see a band of this genre live, but when it comes my way I'll grab it by the hair. Can you imagine seeing a celtic/punk band on St. Patrick's day?! The beer breaths, the sweat showers, the massacre! Alas, this time, good music and my imagination will do. Play it loud and enjoy!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

bouncing off the walls

PS Methinks a mash-up of Flogging Molly's Devil's Dance Floor and Arctic Monkeys' I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor should be made...it must!

And as an added bonus, a song that manages to make me jump from wall to wall every single time I hear it. I used to play it quite often back in my Greek radio days and go nuts in the studio. My boss was lucky enough to walk into the studio on such a day and let's just say that he'll remember this song forever. mwuahahahhaha!

Yes, Dave King routinely called us bastards.

They play in Norfolk on a routine basis, and the venue sells out. I think I missed them playing at the NorVa for the first time since 2002, when they played in September (not making a five-hour drive on a thursday when I have class friday and there's a game of  football, the american kind on saturday)

    Are they as good live as I imagine them to be? {don't spoil my fantasy}

They were at a festival in Greece last summer, but I couldn't at the time travel back and forth 12 hours to see them.

I think seeing just about ANY band on St. Patty's day is a recipe for a drunken brewhaha (dual definition - see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Brewhaha).  Regardless, I've been told Flogging Molly is one of the best, live and otherwise.  I can't only imagine what a St. Patty's day show would be like.  Time to play both FM and Dropkick Murphys now!

Yeah, they were my first concert ever (Flogging Molly, Andrew W.K., Lost City Angels, Alistair). There's a lot of dancing and hugging and generally a lot of commotion. "Devil's Dance Floor" is an opener they sometimes use, that or "Drunken Lullabies".

Eric, brewhaha is one of the best words I've heard of, a wonder of linguistics, and I'm going to be using it persistently from now on!

That's exactly how I imagine them, too. Shows will be explosive. Play them loud! Only way to do it :)

Jonh, me too, and I don't even have any!

Heath, they deflowered you? Nice one! Hugging, dancing, and brewhaha-ing, oh I'm all excited now.

Really? Heh, I guess they go for explosive openers. Nothing wrong with that :)

I knew this song from somewhere but couldn't place it, until....of course! This is on heavy rotation in Miss Ivylander's room. I enjoy it to the extent I'm permitted to....

    My regards to Miss Ivylander!

I had a chance to see them at Coachella last year but alas didn't know who they were & I think Portishead was playing who I really went to the festival to see, so there was no contest. They aren't too bad but not my taste. They're kinda like a more hardcore The Pogues . . . .

That's fair enough, uncling, I would have probably gone for Portishead, too.

I think that they are a band of a certain place and time :)

I for one get a tremendous kick out of you, it is good to see you express yourself, I for one go back to what you like, to re-examine it in able to see the feeling and knowledge you have on the group or music.

I do that with my other friends on MOG as well it helps the learning process.

I especially enjoy the Dropkick Murphys.  I just heard them for the first time today.  You Tube has their version of the song I posted today, Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya (Chad Mitchell Trio with Jim McGuinn).  I should go back and try the Pogues again.  At the time, they were a little much for me.  It always sounded like the singer was spitting out his teeth.

the only irish band that I have seen that is better than this band live is the Pogues. Either band would fit the bill for a night of drinking as far as I am concerned

The Murphys were quite grand on Dave's show, but I must add my voice to the chorus of praise for Flogging Molly. Flat-out, they deliver one of the greatest live shows in the biz - regardless of genre.

Why thank you, elmanolete. I over-express myself sometimes, but MOGgers are patient people, luckily :) I think many of us do what you described, subconsciously or not.

    Spike, that's great news :)

    I'll go find the video.

"It always sounded like the singer was spitting out his teeth" ahahhaha

inrumford, if you have any proof of that, I don't want to see it!

Hijacking isn't illegal around these parts. Do your thing :)

Kevin, I love me some Pogues, too. You're lucky to have seen them live!

Andrea, you are a lady with a fine taste :)

Cinful, you've seen them both?! Nice one! Wonder what it would be like if both of them played the same gig. Madness!

Cheers, GarageRock, video is new to me!

Mikey, op! Now I feel guilty for missing them. I do promise that I'll be there yelling and kicking when they visit my new neck of the woods :)
