WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Dear Killers,

Posted over 2 years ago
it was like at first listen with you, it's no secret. I have been watching you evolve musically, grow a mustache, cover Shadowplay, and invite Lou Reed over for erm, tranquilizer:I appreciate it all and I still like you, even more so.But you owe me. Oh yes, you do. You owe me a Somebody Told Me Twice. A song to jump around to for no or all the reasons in the world, with surreal and yet realistic indie lyrics like:_Well somebody told meYou had a boyfriendWho looked like a girlfriendThat I had in February of last year_Not for an objective reason, oh no, I cannot let objectivity get in the way of my music. Just for my own selfish, silly, psychotic reasons. I'll be here all year, holding a flower and waiting for somebody to tell me again.Selfishly yours,Anna.

  1. Dale says U don't know ... I recently revisited Sam's Town, and while it's not as bad as I thought it was at first, it still doesn't grab me like the debut. It's like they took most of the sexy out of their music, and replaced it with earnestness. Uh, bad trade, guys. And yes, I recognize how wrong it is that I'm asking Brandon Flowers (a fellow Mormon, btw) to be more sexy, so don't bother pointing it out. :P

  2. Anna says haha I won't, I'll be good (for the most part of the day) :) I enjoyed Sam's Town quite much, I did. I just want a silly indie anthem to bounce off the walls to again...I know they can do it, I know it!

  3. juepucta says With this band i feel like Tina getting beat by Ike with his shoe. Loved the debut, disliked the second album. Liked the L. Reed collab, hated the Joy Division cover. Anybody noticed that the ontro to Tranquilize is very much like old school Velvets? Can't put my finger on what exactly gives me the vibe, but it is there. Sister Ray maybe? The first 30 secs of the Killers' track... i might be crazy. -G.

  4. Dale says Yeah, I just want their music to be _fun_ again. I do hope your pleas don't fall pn deaf ears.

  6. Marigold says Killers never really grabbed me. I think it is the mustache.

  7. Anna says G, I fear that I don't have adequate music knowledge to provide an answer :( But can I interest you in some inane Arctic Monkeys related ramblings? ;) Here's hopin', bro :) You tell 'em, Hell! Mike! The mustache is to blame. Evidence: See? My fun song, no mustache!

  8. Marigold says Damn! You busted me with proof. Hmmm, er. uh....I have never been a drums guy and the Killers have a drummer. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

  9. perstn says That first Killers album was a revelation. If they could have kept that up they would be giants. Which it turns out they're not. They're great, but not giants. By the way, talking about fun fun fun songs:

  10. FluxCapacitor says Inane AM ramblings, you say? In a mall on my lunchbreak I watched a jazz band play a swinging version of View From The Morning, with jazz bass, trombone, the lot. I left smiling stupidly, or more stupidly than usual. But no moustaches involved, moustache fans.

  16. Jules09 says Anna, I agree 100% with everything you wrote. I didn't hate Sam's Town, but I can't say I loved it either. I'm afraid I have to say the same for "Tranquilize", at least at first listen. I liked it until the kids came in.

  17. juepucta says Damn kids are poppin' up everywhere! That new Radiohead record has kids too. Down with kids. -G.

  18. Jenn67 says While I do enjoy a good romp song, I must admit my long-time love of VU and Lou Reed. So the combination of The Killers and Lou Reed sounds fantastic to me. And, G, I agree with you. There is something there that reminds me of the Velvets and I can't put my finger on it either. Thanks, Anna!

  19. chucky says Damn, I have never paid any attention to the Killers - but, I really like Tranquilize - I may need to rethink my dismissal.

  20. tybees says They're still getting a lot of mainstream attention (cool w/me) but.....they could go all Rob Thomas on us by the next record. I think the right mix of their own talent + record industry influence could make classic 2000-era stars out of them. I'm talking out of my a** though. Now I'm all like, should I post this comment or not?

  21. ParkerLewis says Sam's town was a good album. I keep reading about the mustache's, western wear etc....As much as I miss the pink blazers and eye liner they had to go. The Killers want to be a group like u2 and wearing eye liner and such will only take them so far. They didnt want to get stuck into a category.....like grunge, alternative, emo...I could go on and on. A group like the Killers that came on so fast can equally leave just as fast. They were damned if they do damned if they dont. People were writing off Sam's Town so quickly I was shocked! You have to give it a chance and let it sink in. Hot Fuss is what it is and comparing the two is tough because you have to look at the whole situation. The bottom line is their style was great and it is hard to look past it. But if you do you do you may find that expectations are not always a bands fault they are faults of our own.

  22. juepucta says Got it! Better late than never. Took me a while and a lot of trawling through my Velvet's stuff. It's Sister Ray. The intro to Tranquilize is definitely going for a Sister Ray vibe. -G.
