WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Premature Speculation

Posted 11 months ago

Patrick Wolf's upcoming album might be come to be his best one yet.

What you might already know: Wolf announced to NME his plan to sell £10 shares of his new album "Battle" on Bandstocks.com. "Basically, you can invest in the finishing of the album and the production of it, and you get a share in the album. So you almost become part of the record company, like a co-owner of the album."

What you might not know: Wolf parted ways with Universal records and in an act of removing the hierarchy between the musician and the audience, joined Bandstocks.com. The website is currently advertising numerous independent artists and previewing their material in order to gain attraction from prospective investors. A 7 minute preview of "Battle" is currently available on the website. The track 'Theseus' features the actress Tilda Swinton. The previewed tracks are the following; 'Battle', 'Vulture', 'Theseus', 'Hard Times', 'Who Will?', 'The Sun is often out', 'Damaris', 'Together'. The album is due out Spring 2009.

/prologue over, on with the main course

Now, if you click the red button, you'll get the 7 minute Bandstocks preview. And it is good. Really good. If it's anything to go by, I have no choice but to stand firmly by my statement up there.

Very sweet. What a great idea. Giving the fans more than just an album but real ownership. I dig it.

That's a great business model. There's a couple of young artists I'd love to invest in 'cos I think they're gonna be huge. Good luck to Mr Wolf.

G, yup. Can you believe how much the industry is changing!

Fluxy, have you found the new Arctic Monkeys yet? When you do, let me know! I'll invest gladly :)

How are you liking the new songs?

Crying Lightning is my favorite of the new bunch and Red Right Hand has a killer Josh Homme-influence riff. They're available here: http://www.hypeful.com/2009/01/22/arctic-monkeys-debut-four-new-songs-cover-nick-cave/

Fluxy, I meant from Patrick Wolf, sorry. Thank you for the link tho. While we're at it, I think my favourite one so far is Pretty Visitors. The organ just kills me!

Another artist i know little about! Neverending with this you people.

Tilda Swinton sings with this Patrick Wolf huh?Well i'm in on that alone then.  I'm still trying to pick up all of her work on film...she's a brilliant actress!

What a fantastic idea selling stock in the form of a record.

Makes you wonder how this isn't a good idea...(nope can't think of one.)

I'll say one just one more thing...this Wolf you speak of has a beautiful voice.

Thanks Anna (and Dale for giving me my first chuckle of the day)

Swinton is great! As is Wolfy, unbelievably talented.

Glad to be of chuckling service, sir :)

Okay never mind about the "in on Tilda alone" comment.

I take that back. Tristan....whooohooo can he sing!

I liked Magic Position as well but Tristan is the deal breaker for me.

He hits those wailing notes? Gave me goosebumps and that's always a measure of the good stuff!

hahaha the comments on the tube cracked me up too!

"Get him into the car - Get him in the car - Oh, %$## it. He won't stop singing. Just throw him in the lake.

Yep, I like young Patrick's new direction, particularly the beat heavy and electroclash tunes. The 7 minute sampler's another great idea. Man, this guy has great ideas coming out of his <fu>.

The sampler sounds very promising, you have impeccable taste as always Anna. Sellaband has a similar idea but you are donating money instead of investing. Once an artist has raised $50,000, sellaband produces their album. I'll definitely have to take a peek at bandstocks...

Greg, YES! He is really versatile so I thought I'd give you link to two quite different songs, glad Tristan made the cut! He plays about 15 musical instruments {if you'll pardon me bragging on his behalf}. Comments over at youtube are pure entertainment gold....

Excellent, Fluxy! I couldn't agree with you more. It's a good idea, indeed, but it's also a torturing teaser.....give us more! :)

Aw thank you very much, Daniel! Glad you enjoyed the sampler.

Sellaband's idea is intriguing as well. I think that "investing" is a bit more attractive than "donating" {selfish prick that I am, eh? :P}. But both of them show how artists {and us mortals} can take matters into their own hands. It's wonderful and scary at the same time.

I'm with you there Anna. I haven't dived into bandstocks yet, but it would be nice if it had forums and a social aspect so investors could collaborate with the artist to give opinions on the work as it evolves.
    Why scary?

Oooooooo I'm loving what I'm hearing from Mr. Wolf. Thanks for posting the preview, it's delicioso! I'm so glad Patrick has left behind his 'folky' roots, not that I didn't like them, I just like his electric offerings better since they are really fascinating. I love his ecclectic sound(& look, he's such a freak, gotta love him hehe).

There is also Fancorps.com which is another band/artist promotion tool. I am a member of Erykah Badu's site there. You can check it out here:

Not sure if bands raise money for their upcoming releases on there but I'm sure some do.

Didn't Bowie do something similar like this a few years back, only to have it fall flat on its face?  I wonder if bandstocks has figued out how to avoid whatever pitfalls Bowie got into.

Daniel, it sure would, but I think that it might collide with their egos (let's face it, they all have some to spare..). Scary for certain parts of the music industry mostly, I guess. If this gets empowered, and more alike concepts follow, they'll become extinct...

Uncle A, I was hoping you would! You're very welcome. Folk does seem to have gone mostly away, and electronic vibes and violins have taken their place...yummy!

Nice...the website I linked to will make record and distribution companies obsolete and yours will take care of PR companies...we are evil..mwuahahhaha!

Kevin, that's OK, I'll give your personal details to a doctor that makes house calls. His name is Dr Love! :)

Groony, yup. http://mog.com/Jonh_Ingham/blog/1195294 hehe I think this is a much milder version, and hopefully it will work out OK!

poe, yay! Patrick and Wolf make a great {artistic} couple, don't they??

I'm with Rawkiddoh on this. I'm yet to really understand why he gets all the plaudits. His last album was quite good, if a little overproduced. Having seen him a couple of years ago his expansive sound doesn't transfer to a live show particularly well.

I might get swayed by the new album though...who knows?

Thanks for the bite sized clips.

Ben, what can I say. I think he's extremely talented and gifted. It was a bit overproduced, I think that's the reason why some people didn't warm up to it.

Uh oh...don't say that...I'm very excited to see him in May...I've been waiting for too long!

Have a pleasant sonical digestion :)

I heard the Battle megamix for the first time yesterday - so behind - and am liking what I heard.  Look forward to hearing the "proper" version.

Still thinking about whether I should invest.  Think I probably will, if I get my lazy arse round to doing it.

In a way it's a shame that he's part company with a major label - though only because I do love a good music video, and was looking forward to some more high budget ones.  Then again if I want some expensive vids, I should get investing.

milkshake, YES! I thought you might enjoy this :)

I think that Patrick is very creative, and he can still give us excellent video candy with a smaller budget. But yup, investing oughta help hehe

I'll be seeing him in Leeds, and if he doesn't come here, the next nearest city which might be Manchester. How about you?

Darla, yup. What's not to love, really. Now you're telling me...I was rambling in the wrong way, rookie mistake. I'll know better next time :)

If he comes to Scotland, theyn I'll definately go.  I think the tour is just in England though?  Still, he did DJ in Glasgow in October, so there's hope!

I just hope we get the album ASAP.  Wouldn't mind he released them a few months apart actually, give me something to look forward to.  With a couple of disappointing purchases so far and some to come (cough Utada cough), I reckon Patrick's CDs could be my Top 2 buys of 2009!
