I am not scared!

Posted over 2 years ago
You know, I'm not 100% punk and I'm not 100& goth, but I have certain elements from both (yes, Dale, especially from the goth side! hehe). I was wondering what my reaction would be to a garage-punk rock band that is dipped in goth. Guess what...I heart them...What do I like about The Horrors:1. Their goth side ;)2. That combo organ that gets me every time.3. The fact that their songs get stuck in my head like gum on hair.4. The insane vocals.5. "All of singles released by The Horrors prior to "Gloves" have been chart ineligible because they have been packaged with inserts and stickers, breaking chart rules". hahahahha6. That they don't seem to be focusing on taking themselves seriously, but much more on having fun (even if their version of fun is singing songs about a 60's girl group dying a gruesome death, altering their belief in true love, see Death At The Chapel).7. That their songs feel like a spooky-punky movie that you want to see more than once. What do they sound like to me? Like Art Brut, in Halloween costumes, on hallucinating substances, performing in a dingy basement with Sid Vicious posters on the walls.I'm sure that they are pretty overhyped at the UK, but, as always, I'm hype- free. I'm also sure that they're not 100& original, but if I actually cared about that, I wouldn't be listening to half of the bands I fancy. Some random song info from wiki:*"The music video for Sheena is a Parasite":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZMrwZItOGE* was directed by Chris Cunningham (Aphex Twin, anyone?), starred Samantha Morton and was banned by MTV for its use of strobe lighting (pansies!).Count In Fives is about Faris Badwan's (the singer) childhood obsession with arranging things in groups of 5.Gloves is about Badwan's obsessive collection of lost gloves. For the music video fans of the band were asked along to be part of it.The B-side Sister Leonella (from the CD single She Is The New Thing) featured backing vocals by members of The Horrors' families and friends. She Is The New Thing's extra yummy video:And my personal favourite so far:

On a different note, I would like to let you know/ remind you that *"Chris":http://mog.com/I_am* (a.k.a. I_am) created an account for us to post our feelings about the passing of Chris Pryor (aka Crashpryor). *"Here is the relevant post":http://mog.com/I_am/blog_post/119811#write-comment*.The account is *"Remembering Crashpryor":http://mog.com/Remembering_Crashpryor*, the login e-mail is crash@withoutguile.net and the password is chrisp. 6. guso says Anna, After my post months ago, I finally saw The Horrors live last Sat nite, as close as 60 feet. I'm agree that they are not 100% original but this a group full of energy. In some point of the presentation one gal friend and I found a similarity between vocalist and Julian Casablanca (a joke). Yeah the keyboards are really great. Another joke, when the the big scream on the songs, the claw, the best thing on live it's the claw. .guSo PS. After seen The Horrors for 45 min a took a run to take place to see Interpol and the new songs...

  7. fairportfan says Thought you might find these images amusing. They are, as the first says, from *The Gashleycrumb Tinies*, by Edward Gorey. (Well, the graveyard appears to be a fake created in homage to the book.) It's an alphabet, as you can see from the two pages reproduced, showing twenty-six unfortunate children in their antepenultimate moments. It's *very* funny, in its quietly morbid way, but, as a single book, it's Ridiculously Expensive. OTOH, there's a collection of a bunch of his stuff, called *Amphigorey* (an English/Greek play on words), of which you can find my review (and a link to buy it, hint hint) by "*clicking here*":http://electronictiger.com/reviews/amphigorey.htm. (Incidentally, i had remembered the first as "A is for ANNA...", which, when i saw your post, tickled my sense of irony. And, if you can't see clearly, Titus is opening a gift-wrapped box...)

  10. Anna says Pat and extraordinarypoems, glad you like my horrors :) meko, I do believe you're on the right track. Using fun as a criterion is good, as weird as it may sound, will have long-term effects, as you noted. Jules, you have no idea, it has me bouncing off the walls. I bet my strangeness is one of the reasons you love me ;) Neill, if you had a pound for every time someone called "lucky sod", you would be able to buy Reading now, but here it is again, nevertheless: you lucky sod! Hey guso! You were in my thoughts yesterday, I wanted to send you another Editors cover. Will get to it today. So cool that you saw them live! I bet they are energetic as hell. And Interpol, too? So much musical sweetness! Mike...................................are you trying to bankrupt me or give me a stroke or both?! OK, people, how come no one told me about Edward Gorey before? And you call yourselves erm, I don't know what you call yourselves :P Great review, great images, now excuse me, I need to visit Amazon to investigate. Thank you thank you thank you so much for the introduction..........amazing.

  14. 1234chainsaw says "Death At The Chapel" is pretty good! I mean, if you add Farfisa organ to The Libertines sound, it can't be that bad, right? I found the full-length album kind of tiresome, though; these guys are better in small blasts. For similar stuff that has more lasting power in my ears, go and listen to some Lyres or Lost Sounds.

  17. Anna says Dale, the fact that I usually swear on my black eyeliner doesn't mean that I'm goth..oh wait.. ;) Do add them, they are definitely Halloween stuff :) Cool, David. I already have the album, but we need to EMCD MOGgers...mwuahahha Pekka, all sounds sound better with Farfarisa like sounds! Neill, I'd tell you to stop rubbing it in our e-faces, but the fact that Razorlight once headlined always entertains me way too much ;)

  18. Marigold says That there is some "horror rock" if there is such a thing. Work with me here. You said you are not 100% goth right? Lets say you are really only 85% goth. IF you are 85% goth and then you add knowing me, that adds 10% goth because I am older then you. SO that gets you to 95% goth. You said you were not 100% punk either so lets guess on the conservative side lets say you are 75% punk. Here is the tricky part because punk is NOT goth so you need add your goth (95%) to your punk (75%) which equals 170%. Then you need to take the 170% goth/punk combo and divide that by 2 to get your real goth percent which brings your goth down to 85% which is where you started out. To get your goth total back up you are going to need to up your scarry factor here on MOG. I suggest you start trying to scare people and start doing downright weird things that are kind of creepy. That seems to be the only way you are going to be able to get your goth back into the acceptable 95% range. OH SHIT! I almost forgot. You picked out my Halloween costume. That gives you an additional 2% to your goth notching you up to 87% goth.

  24. QueenofHell says I like 'em. I wanted to see them at the ICA, I think it was, but t'was sold out. I love their get ups, too, particularly the one with the beret and waist-length cloak. Oh my, I've just remembered my mum gave me a velvet cloak she used to wear (many of my mum's 70s clothes are like fancy dress outfits). It's at their house in Newcastle. Damn. I totally forgot about it! I'll have to knock the dust off it, and get it on when I go back next month. The font I've been working on is a bit horror. I'll show it to you when I've finished it.

  27. Anna says Glad to hear that, Danny. I find them so ear-pleasing :) Hell, can you imagine me and you drunk in one of their shows? "MY FRIEND CAME ALL THE WAY FROM GREECE TO SEE THE HORRORS", while they are screaming and singing and playing Loudly, and I'm trying to get up on the stage to sexually harass at least one of them. Ouaaaa! (still can't believe that you managed to get me in the front row in QOTSA) Do show me your work! Your cloak sounds yummy. And I'm sure the lipstick will compliment your lovely facial characteristics!

  28. QueenofHell says Ooooh, Ouaaaaaaa! I am imagining it now, and it sounds like so much disgraceful fun. I imagine I'd be tripping over my mum's cloak, which I wouldn't put in the cloakroom, although I've always wanted a cloak, so I could put it in a cloakroom. Shouting much bollocks. I'd give you a leg up onto the stage. And then follow you. All this would be done with a pint of wine in my hand, naturally.

You, only you! Klaxons and Horrors within 2 days? I'm going to cry.......... Joshy, I know!......I wonder what they would do with a video that shows Spears having an epileptic seizure caused by strobe lights while not wearing any underwear (ewww).

  35. Marigold says An additional application of eyeliner will get you another 4%. That gets you up 91%. If you add a short skirt with some black stockings and some knee high boots you are going to hit the goth/sexy meter up to 100%. (which is way cooler then the goth/punk combo IMO) BTW, in regards to the picture that Darla posted. Is it mandatory to have no muscles on your legs to be in the band? I have never seen that many people standing next to one another with such skinny legs. :)
