WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

"'Killing" two indie birds with one post.

Posted 11 months ago

My thoughts on the new Franz Ferdinand album: it begins powerfully with the great Ulysses. It continues with Turn It On, No You Girls, and Send Him Away, which in my humble opinion should not be in an album we waited almost 3 years for, and it gets loose there. Things improve wonderfully with Twilight Omens, and after it come 5 songs {Bite Hard, What She Came For, Live Alone, Can't Stop Feeling, Lucid Dreams} that are just fantastic, full frontal new Franz excellence. Mediocre Dream Again tones it a bit down again, and the album ends with Katherine Kiss Me, which feels a bit too intimate for outsiders. All in all, I'm pleased with it and with the way they are evolving musically, but I also have the taste of an album that could have been great but instead is unbalanced-ly very good.

My thoughts on Patrick Wolf: I'm sure you know I love the man and his music. Today I stumbled into this: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/135724/1209570 ;So Patrick has UK tour dates out. London, Cambridge, Colchester and Gloucester. And that's all. Now I have no problem with those last 2 towns, but c'mon! No Leeds no Manchester no nothing? As the Strokes would say, is this it? Are you kidding me? Add more dates or you'll experience my Greek wrath!

EDIT: Neill gave me an NME link that shows that this is just the warm up tour. Extensive UK tour is on May. Yay! Patrick does love me (or is scared of me)!

And out. Thank you for reading :)

Viva la Franz! Viva Kapranos! Etc :) I think that even if their next album is death metal, they'll still have their style in it :)

I agree with your take on the new Franz Ferdinand...Bite Hard and What She Wants are amazing and I can play them on repeat, over and over and over and over.

They are rumored for Coachells and I know I will be front and center...with my camera and a bib.

Have you heard the Ulysses remix on the Ulysses single? - really cool deconstruction of the track

Amber, I'm really glad to hear that. I'll be waiting for luscious portraits of Alex...

What she wants is also what she came for, no? It's the same thing, so no worries :)

No excuses will be accepted.....the indie court finds you guilty of criminal negligence! You are convicted to 3 back to back listens of the new Franz :)

    LOVING the new Franz album!

Is it just me, but since joining MOG, I don't miss the good albums that come out, so it seems like every year supplies more and more good music? I thought last year was great, but we're only one month into 2009 and my brian is exploding from the onslaught of excellent tunes!

Dale, I think that's very true. We are super-connected and on constant alert. Last year was awesome. This one started wonderfully, but to me the verdict of the whole year will be affected by the new Arctic Monkeys......*biting nails in agony*

I like the new Franz but last year there was all this talk about them coming up w/a new sound & as far as I'm concerned, it just sounds like the old Franz to me(which I don't mind but was expecting something a bit different). I do find the extended almost 8 min. version of 'Lucid Dreams' smack dab in the middle of the album to be most annoying though.

Haven't picked up the album yet, but I'm thankful for a listen-peek into it.  It sounds like a return to the first album, to which I'm also thankful, because I thought their last one was flat mediocre.

Yay for FF (sang Ulysses all the way to school today), boo for Patrick Wolf (he needs to get his behind back to the US as well).

My thoughts on Tonight (in the order that they came to me).

    1. This is fantastic!

    2. I think my friend Katherine will be pleased with the last track.

    3. I wonder what Anna thinks.

I think I will forever associate Kapranos and co. with you. Which is kind of weird because I've never met you. But this twisted music e-world we live in kind of distorts life, doesn't it?

Re: the new FF. Here's to a hybrid of dark cabaret music and glam-rock for disaffected romantics - like me. I'm buying in, and more so than the previous album. So there!

Joxy, just feel lucky that I just found out that an extensive UK tour will follow in May, otherwise you'd find me knocking on your door! :)

Uncle A, I see what you mean, the over-hyped new direction. I think that what they did was basically lessen the guitars a bit, and boost the synths. Regarding Lucid Dreams, I think I agree. It could be two separate songs.

Poe winked at me! I'm innocent ;)

Patrick redeemed himself. It's really hard to be angry at him :)

p-wagz, you're welcome. I think it's like they're showing us what more can they do with their style, which is all good. W00t! (yes, "w00t!").

Jeff, Ha! The only kind of ass-kicking we like :)

Sam, glad to hear that! :)

GarageRock, try it try it...but I'm not the one to blame if you don't like it so no complaining afterwards :P

Bah! I'm happy that I found out that there will be more dates in May. And with the new album coming up, I'm sure he'll come your way as well.

Good man, Kevin! I hope that it will sort you out in a wonderful way :)

Pamela, Wolf got scared of me howling and apparently more shows will follow. Yay!

Awww that's so sweet of you! It surely does, and in a great way. Here's to meeting some time in the future and indulge in Kapranos-related ramblings :)

Mikey, that's a great description. I should expect nothing less from our word wizard. Nice to see you hop on the celebration wagon! Viva la Franz!

Well, you've certainly "killed" the any wish I have for listening to FF's new album, 'cos if a big fan like yourself finds it up-and-down, then someone like me who only really loves their singles isn't going to have the patience to wade thru' the filler material. I'll wait for the next single, methinks.
