WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Glasvegas Come As They Are...

Posted 10 months ago

Thursday is the new Sunday. Or I'll say anything to post this today.

I found out about the cover from this blog. For some reason, I couldn't have a listen there, so I investigated myself, found it, and bought it {best 0.70 pence I ever spent}. It's wonderfully heart-breaking. Excellent balance between respecting a song and making it your own. Glasvegas' sonical fuzziness and full-of-tragedy vocals empty my head, give me chills, and slay me {not necessarily in that order}.

So, come as you are and enjoy {it's mandatory}.

    "Haunting", excellently put.

Absolutely. They blew my mind when I saw them, and I'll be seeing them again in a few weeks for a repeat explosion session.

I was on the fence until the guitar solo, at which point is passes over into brilliance. I prefer the original, but least for the pounding drums and that massive bass line, but this does it justice.

I knew there was a good reason for having a little MOG black book. Now it's time for me to sit back and receive what's in all fairness mine :P

Dale, it had me on the first vocal line, but I see what you mean about the guitar solo, it's a passage to brilliance for sure.

    Glad you think so!

so this is this is this Glasvegas all the hip kids keep talking about.  I think I need more than a cover for an introduction.  Sounds nice though.  Very shoegazery and droney.

Hey, you introduced me to Muse!

But any band I hear about from you I have to put up to the "Are these a bunch of cute Indie British boys that Anna will invariably like" litmus test. If the band can be more than haircuts and pouty/aloof/all too serious faces, than I'm usually alright with them.

    Bad memory, bad Anna! :)

Really? I'm sorry to hear that, although I guess it's fair and I can't blame you. I'm actually a bit tough to please, because indie is my genre and I've heard a lot of bands and have inevitably formed many standards. When I like someone's music, I also often come to swoon about the singer or some other band member, but it works like that and not vice versa (for example I am attracted to Bellamy because I'm attracted to Muse's music). I guess the way I talk about the bands I like (like an overexcited child) might give the impression that I give priority to external features rather than the music. I'm sorry about that :(

Oh, like anything I say, my tongue is usually planted firmly in my cheek.  My generalization is more good natured joking.  Like, my wife would generally hear some morose music, depressing or sad and imediately say that I should love this song.  While not (necessarily true) I do have a pention for melancholy music.

So yes, I do have a certain type or genre of music that my tastes conform to, but I wold hardly say that's the only thing I like.  If something tends to be singer/songwriter driven, I'm usually a sucker for it.  Always have been.  But then there's electronic stuff that really captures my mind as well, that is the furthest thing from that grass roots song making.

And I really do like some of Muse's music.  My apologies if my joke missed the mark, I was only trying to have a little fun.  And hey, there have been plenty of bands I have liked and paid extra attention to because of the lead singer/songstress' "external features" (bands like The Pierces come to mind)!  It's rock n' roll, which has always been about the image as well as the music.

I am sorry that I misunderstood. I guess deep down inside I think that people with different musical tastes than mine perceive me that way {this is turning into a therapy session}, and I projected that belief on your joke.

I'm glad that you enjoy certain Musings, as I'm glad that I'm not the only one that gets misunderstood in the "you'll love this"-but-I-don't kind of way. Come to think of it, I'm sure that we all have been, and done it to others as well.

PS The Pierces are worth every sigh and howling, can't blame you there :)

Really, when I see beautiful people (modelesque?) making that red headed stepchild music, rock n' roll, I can't help but think it's a bit unfair.  Rock's there to get people like Joey Ramone and Rick Ocassic [sp] laid.

I also think you introduced me to The Pierces, whom my wife now loves as well. So thanks!

Interesting.  They have a kind of slow build kind of thing going on.  It's like it's continually building.  Not bad.  Need to hear more.  These things usually sound better within the context of the whole album for me.

Tyler, I'm with you on that one. It's even worse when actual models {try to} become singers. Off the stage and on the catwalk!

That's true, I actually remember that one. You're very welcome! :D

Neill, they either don't, or they laugh at us feeling their pain :P

I feel like I need to console him and tell him I'm not from Greece ;)

Sam, yup! Slow building and slow burning. I played Daddy's Gone for one of my friends back in Greece, and he said "does this ever reach somewhere?" and I said "no, that's part of its charm and you're a twat" :)

The album is one of my top favourite ones for 2008, hope it will not disappoint you.

nordico, they are, indeed. I had the chance to get to know them early on on MOG before the hype started to come from all over the place, and I can verify that.

    Simply brilliant!

Im new to mogger today and i dont quite understand exactly how it works.

I had just typed in placebo and saw anna's very fasinating picture, clicked it and disided to give this song a whirl. :)

what is the name of that artist? my sister has a few of his/her pictures hanging in her room and i asked her but she cant remember.

ANYWHO great song... Im a fan of the nirvana version but this one blows my mind. Much like Radiohead's album "Kid A" does to me. Or sonic youth's remake of "Superstar". Or "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse.

WELL i seem so be droning on... CHEERIO!

I wonder how North American audiences will react to Glasvegas now that they've just released the album over there. At least they haven't had to suffer the bewildering hype like UK audiences.

    Welcome, Sophie!

Thank you very much. The artist is Mark Ryden: http://www.markryden.com/ He's truly great and charismatic.

I'm glad you liked it so, it won a place in my heart at first listen.

Nice to meet you! And if you have any MOG questions, do feel free to MOG-mail me :)

Ben, I guess that depends on how much money Sony will spend on their promotion there (I can be a cynic like that...). Like I told you at your post, I'm glad I was in my little hole and missed the hype, it damages music sometimes.

Their album pleased me extensively and thoroughly :)
