WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Under the covers with Detroit Cobras

Posted over 2 years ago
My beloved Detroit Cobras take the Strokes' Last Nite, powder it with sweet melancholy, reduce the noise and boost the melody, and give us one of my favourite covers of all time. Enjoy :)

  1. dachmo says Pretty nice of you to allow the Cobras the use of your old avatar!

  9. dermahrk says Anna, I like! I heard another Cobras track (are they really from Detroit?) on a MOJO compilation of tracks played by Dylan on his radio show and I liked that too. So it's two for two for these guys/girl/whatever.....I just may have to "borrow" this CD from you....

  10. SA says Nice one, thx. Sometimes I like covers, yet most of the time I prefer the original version by a long margin. ;) Not that huge of a margin in this case, although when you are in a club, you have to prefer being able to scream along to The Strokes. ;) Laaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssstttttt Nnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiiggggght. :P But always good to hear other peoples takes on songs. ;) Yesterday I was surprised by Devo's version of "Satisfaction", which took me a while to recognize it. :)

  11. Anna says Mark, they are a cover band from Detroit, that covers Motown, Soul music & 50’s rock & roll in a wonderful way....what's not to like?! This CD is a compilation, but I'd love to hook you up with an actual album of theirs. I'll MOG-mail ya when it's ready. You're welcome, Stefan! :) That's right, different strokes for different folks and circumstances (was that a really bad pun or what?!).

  14. juepucta says A little sidebar... On a similar vein as teh DCs, i recently got into The Gore Gore Girls. Less covers and more original material, but similar vibe. Thought you might dig them if you give them a listen. Their Bloodshot Records page has some samples http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/artists/goregoregirls . The official site is at http://www.goregoregirls.com . Gotta love women that rawk. -G.

  15. soundsa-mazing says first of all, i like your pun ;) ha ha and i'm not sure how i feel about the song...I think i agree with SA about needing to be able to yell with the strokes....but i like that it's putting a new spin on things, maybe people who don't like the loudness of the strokes can now appreciate a wonderful song :)

  16. deadmandeadman says Well, here I am a day late and a dollar short. But I like this, its direct, loose, a little raw; that's the way I like it (uh huh, uh huh). Good song. Good post Anna (go with him).

  19. Mike the Knife says Ahhhh. Love both versions. And this one is different enough to really justify the cover. Charmed by the Cobras again. (Shouldn't that be the other way around?)

  21. Spike says The track is old school enough for me to be able to perceive musical beauty in, and it has it in spades. Good job, Anna.

  22. Augusts1 says I read your title, clicked on the song & started reading the comments, then saw from them that this song was a Strokes song & I was shocked. Doesn't sound like the original much at all, which is a good thing(even thought I like the original). Haven't heard much of anything by the Cobras. I'll have to check them out further.

  23. Bartleby says It's always risky business to cover a recent song but these reptilians from Detroit do have a certain knack... Wistfully executed. Thanks Anna.
