"On his 2004 album, Has Been, William Shatner of Star Trek fame covered Common People. The track was produced by Ben Folds and featured additional vocals by Joe Jackson, complementing Shatner's spoken-word style".With props to our lady sommer face :)So...you likey?

  2. dermahrk says So Bernie is "truly proud" of this? Or just quite the good liar? Anna, I own a few Shatner tracks on the Golden Throats collections and am a big fan of the early Joe Jackson before he got all so-FIST-icated. This was indeed a rare treat, but not terribly funny. Which is good for Shatner. At least the guy can laugh at himself.

  3. deadmandeadman says Anna, you mention shatner's "Style". I'm still laughing! Thanks! And you as well Pop Savant.

  4. Anna says I gotta say that I knew little about Shatner and Jackson (who, btw, has the same b-day date as me, only I'm fresher!), before this track. I'm absorbing knowledge by Mark's video and (Hipster) Mark's comment :) Dearest dm, not me, not me, wiki does :) You're welcome :)

  6. Lamicus says One of the finest covers ever recorded, IMNSFHO. I do prefer the track he did with Rollins, though. Personal preference.

  7. SA says I heard this a couple of weeks ago for the first time, and me and Sureshot both agreed that, if I remember correctly, it was awful. I believe my wording came close to "nothing short of rape". ;) Anyway, what the song does do is add to my ever growing admiration of Pulp. :P

  10. Mike the Knife says He - is - a - giant! (In many ways...) Was delighted that he was Emmy-ized for his work on the current TV series "Boston Legal" - but nothing in his career will ever trump the insanity of his cover of the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." (Also, just caught an old - but refurbished with new computer effects - ep of "Star Trek," late at night, quite by accident. Really. Soooooo entertaining.)

  11. hontzd says "She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge..." I dunno, Anna, do you identify with this song some? :) I recently learned that my new girlfriend's first celeb crush was on Shatner. I suppose he does have a certain je ne sais Kirk, but I just appreciate he can parody himself (and make good money at it). Viva La T.J. Hooker!
