New Song: She Thought

Posted almost 4 years ago
I was talking to someone about this song the other day.

I wrote this song about a friend who worked extremely hard, sacrificing everything for her idea of Success, but eventually realized that she wasn’t getting what she wanted from life. All her hard work was just making her a tired person.

A lot of my songs aren't really about one certain occurence, or one specific thing. Many of them get put together in piecemeal kinda way, and only after they're done do I actually see what they're about. The songs are very much about ideas, and the feelings those ideas invoke. This one was like that.

In the end the general idea behind She Thought was to challenge the very American belief that all it takes to get ahead in life is perseverance, faith and hard work.

I had implicit faith in that idea when I was a kid. It seemed simple enough. The idea of working hard has very little nuance to it, you just do it, and it's done. There's no complicated social puzzle to figure out. No relationships to shift around in.

As time went on, it became pretty clear to me that this was a nice sentiment, but unfortunately, sentiment has little to do with reality.

Sacrificing everything for success was a very romantic and attractive idea for me, raised Catholic. You know, if you give enough you'll receive tenfold, Jesus and the fish, etc. Unwittingly teaching us that receiving is the only reason to give.

I guess my friend learned the hard way that it's not enough to work and give. You have to know your limits, and enjoy what you have while you can.

LYRICS

She was just fine on the outside. She would never break. It takes too much time to cry.

But it took too long to get here. You should be able to have anything you want.If you’re willing to give a little bit for it.At least that’s what she thought.

She knew she was a missile who’d never get fired. She would begin to bristle when they went on and on about sacrifice.

But it took too long to get here. You should be able to have anything you want.If you’re willing to give a little bit for it.At least that’s what she thought.

Oh please, let it work this time.Oh please, let it come to term.Since when is it not enough to try.Or is the pain what you prefer? Will it save her?

She was second-guessing the reasons that brought her here. She was acquiescing to her favorite primal fear.

‘Cause it took too long to get here. You should be able to have anything you want.If you’re willing to give a little bit for it.At least that’s what she thought.
