TOUR DIARY #7

¡StayCriticalOrDie! #5 “though others are in the nightfar away lips upon a dusty armpitthe nostrils are full of tears” “is it dirtydoes it look dirtythat’s what you think of in the city….”- Frank O’hara Motel rooms are like confessionals; they are about confinement a place to turn the dreams loose a scene of repeated, particular, monologues. Imagine the contour map of all the

"American Miniature"I could talk about so many different things at this point: meeting tom waits’ tailor in north beach sf; the woes of memphis (our kanadian tourmates) - thrown out of their hotel and left without their horn player (I filled at café du nord that night); or hangin with daniel handler (author of the lemony snickett books et al) and his unbelievable accordian skillz, but I wont.

“Athens vs Sparta”Having hit california in an orgy of driving & playing; then playing our spaceland show (los angeles – complete with a new uk band showcase our agent had muscled into the opening slot – marty dubbed these young keeners ‘sons of spinal tap’ and jude said ‘neil diamond’) and kept driving into our Sunday-day off we found a pleasant trashy motel named ‘the sunset’

“Dish Dosh”Bands on tour end up configuring themselves as clans or dysfunctional fams or gangs. or sitcoms. Or that group of pre-schoolers out on parade all holding onto the rope. (“can someone please tell me what im supposed to do now?”) And when two bands collide, usually due to the whims of the booking agents, results can be anywhere from terrifically surprising to regretably impotent.

“america eats its young”Note: as expected, the rush of long drives/load-in/soundcheck kinda makes it too much of a thing to institute our ‘pyschic clothes line’ while we’re opening for andrew, martin and jeremy. But start collecting, kanada…For anyone who Hasn’t lived ‘on the road’, it should be told that tour life is more about observing places then really experiencing them. One

“the vantriloquist”Note: I was wrong about the van. It’s a club wagon. With a trailer bc we got so much percussion stuff. When the opening band has more gear then the headliner, it can be a little weird. Our new album National Anthem of Nowhere could loosely be thematically linked: edges, liminal places, borders and what happens when you cross them. Up to today, crossing into the us of a has

This is a blog, a tour diary. Apostle of Hustle’s usual blog of faux-losophy, !StayCriticalOrDie!, will return mid-May.The Tour: opening for andrew bird. Someone burned me a copy of his new record but I wont listen to it. Bad karma before a tour. Stoked bc my assumption is that his fans are ‘music nerds’ & ‘love listening’ my type of people. Takes one to know one, eh? Tho of course I cou

1. “mack the knife” - bobby darin2. “johnny mathis' feet” - mark eitzelThese tunes must be paired together. Darin, one of the masters of old school phrasing & swing, completed by Buddy Rich's drumming on this track, and Brechts cutting lyric. WHAM! Building, insistent, unstoppable. I chose “johnny mathis’ feet” for Eitzel only because it suits my grouping - Eitzel has written MAN...

" & even yet, I dare not let it languishDare not indulge in Memory's rapturous pain;Once drinking deep of that divine anguish,How could I seek the empty world again?" - emily bronteLet's turn some alchemy. Work inner torture into a physical task; change the nature not the energy of the pain. Our base metal is yr typical streetcorner romantic devastation. Let's imagine the experiment was only f
