I Hope We Both Die

Posted about 5 years ago
I hope that our few remaining friendsGive up on trying to save usI hope we come up with a failsafe plotTo piss off the dumb few that forgave usI hope the fences we mendedFall down beneath their own weightAnd I hope we hang on past the last exitI hope it's already too lateAnd I hope the junkyard a few blocks from hereSomeday burns downAnd I hope the rising black smoke carries me far awayAnd I never come back to this townAgain in my lifeI hope I lieAnd tell everyone you were a good wifeAnd I hope you dieI hope we both dieI hope I cut myself shaving tomorrowI hope it bleeds all day longOur friends say it's darkest before the sun risesWe're pretty sure they're all wrongI hope it stays dark foreverI hope the worst isn't overAnd I hope you blink before I doYeah I hope I never get soberAnd I hope when you think of me years down the lineYou can't find one good thing to sayAnd I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk outYou'd stay the hell out of my wayI am drowningThere is no sign of landYou are coming down with meHand in unlovable handAnd I hope you dieI hope we both dieI can't decide why I enjoy this song so much. It's not the usual laughing at the irony type of reaction that most people seem to have.I find it oddly endearing and sweet. Maybe it's because it reminds me of a particular relationship I once had and those of many people close to me. Most everyone seems to have that one relationship based solely on proving how much you can suffer for the other person.Or maybe it's because deep down I'm the ultimate pessimist.

  2. chucky says Haha. The first time I heard this song when lyla posted it, I went out and bought it and then played it for my husband and told him it was our song. He told me that he hated me sometimes and I smiled and told him that's why it's our song. Heh. But, we "hate" each other in a good way, so it's all good.

  3. Lyla says i fucking love that song. and she's right, i make just about everyone listen to that song. it's like a disease. probably in my top 20 songs of all time. other favorite mountain goats songs in the same vein? _I've got you, You've got whatever's left of me to get. Our conversations are like minefields, No one's found a safe way through one yet._ from "southwood plantation road", and _If we never make it back to California I want you to know I love you But my love is like a dark cloud full of rain That's always right there up above you_ from "see america right". all are off tallahassee, incidentally, which might be my favorite album. although i thought "sunset tree" was fucking amazing, especially after listening to "lion's teeth". ok, freakish fan talk done.
