Nikki Sixx is better know as the bass player from the band Motley Crue. At the height of Motley Crue's success Nikki Sixx was just a breath away from taking the biggest fall any musician can have. In fact he shouldn't be alive today having died of a drug overdose in 1987 but being revived by a medic who refused to give up. The result was "Kickstart my Heart" which appeared on Motley Crue's 1989 album Dr Feelgood which chronicled the band's fight with addiction over the previous years.
The Heroin Diaries are just that, they're Nikki Sixx's diaries from Xmas 1986 to Xmas 1987. They detail how he went downhill deeper into addiction before finally recovering. For anyone thinking they can handle drugs this book is a real eye opener, that the most famously decadent rock star of the 1980's couldn't handle the drugs he was on and spent most of his time contemplating ending his own life.
The album is music inspired by the diaries with excerpts from the diaries. After reading his diaries years later Nikki Sixx says himself "how the hell am I still alive". The music tells the rollercoaster tale of that year, of the deep despair and hell that is drug addiction and more importantly how it is often the small things that drive the addict to clean up, no matter how hard it can be. It's rock and roll in it's purest, told from personal experience. At times it sounds almost cheerful, but at no point are you left under any illusions. Nikki Sixx is one very lucky person to still be alive, he's cheated death too often to take life for granted.
